its an urdu to english windows like how we would use urdu terms for the english ones, that is why is comes up as very hilarious

To help you understand, the translations have been made literally and are kinda 'wrong'.

For example, the translation given for "save" is "Bachao". "Bachao" is used when referring to people (e.g. "save me!"), not for storing files. The proper Urdu translation would be different.

Some were funny as they were just downright silly, like the translation for "scrollbar": "Idhar-se-Udhar, Udhar-se-Idhar" which roughly means "go here, go there".

If you get a Pakistani friend/relative to do the translations for you, then you'll find it funny too

Thanks - kind of you to take the time to humor silly old me.

I saw a documentary once about an IT company in India that was installing public internet portals in poor neighborhoods. It was basically a wall with a monitor and keyboard and roller mouse. It had an amazing effect. Groups of kids would come by - many never having used a computer or the internet before, and picked it up very quickly. Not having been exposed to the lingo before, they made up some of their own names for things. The hourglass was named for that drum-looking thing that Braman or Shiva holds in one of their hands ('scuze my ignorance, I don't know which one it was). But maybe Bill Gates and co. should have talked to kids to find out what words they would recommend?

just a quick question- how mutually intelligible are hindu and urdu ? will one speaker have any difficulty understanding another ? or is it like bosnian/croatian/serbian where the three are essentially the same language but spoken by muslims/catholics/orthodox respectively ?

also another question- this one about arabic (so much for a quick ?) . i've seen in various linguistic publications which list languages and number of speakers arabic listed seperately (such as 'yemeni arabic', 'morrocan arabic' , etc. )is spoken arabic that different everywhere ? i know that written arabic is pretty standard (in large part because of the Quran), but do any of you native arabic speakers have difficulty understanding another arab from other lands ?

also how mutaully intellegible is arabic and hebrew ?

Hindi and Urdu are mutually intelligible provided the speakers use simple words as these are common in both languages. Urdu was "created" when the persians, arabs and the sanskrit/hindi speaking people lived together in the asian subcontinent. Hindi was derived from sanskrit. So there are a lot of words, grammar which are common. If a speaker of either language starts using words which are err.....unique to that language instead of the common words then....

I cant understand peotry in Urdu. And neither could an Urdu speaker understand poetry in hindi.
