Re: how to create a website

    You need a server.

You can use a web authoring application like Dreamweaver to make decent web sites.

Personally, I do it the old fashioned way, using a simple text editor to
code the HTML and CSS myself. I use the GIMP to
    create/manipulate images for websites.

If you leave your computer on all day and night like me, don't intend to be doing anything too-heavy duty (like a large file server, music/video downloads from the site etc) and have a good connection and computer, you can turn your normal computer into a server and save on the costs of paying someone else.

    .NET is eeevil

Web design is important...anyone can learn HTML and CSS (and javascript, PHP etc etc) but making good web sites is more complicated and its important that you read about web design, and look around at what other people have done etc for a professional looking site.

    .NET is my favourite!

I have been working with .NET for around 3 years! Experience matters when considering a website to be Interactive!

If you don't have Dreamweaver (industry standard website design software) or Microsoft Frontpage, try this free and open-source website designer:

    http://www.nvu.com/

I've been using it recently to redesign my website.

Alternatively, you may want to consider a blog which are much easier since all the templates are already laid out for you:

No! It takes a day to learn enough html and css to get a decent website up and running, and in the long term it's well worth it.

Beginners don't realise, a little bit of learning goes a long away, once frontpage or dreamweaver has caught them, it's downhill from there, they'll never recover!

In fact, notepad, a few free colour tools, maybe photoshop, and a couple of days of patience!

    Pffft...vim.

Seriously...I don't get why people like it so much :S Something like Kate has all the functionality of Vim that I'm aware of, but is just easier to use. Vim is admittedly faster being command line but meh. My favourite command line editor is nano just cos its simple and easy for command line stuff...

    Anyhow, kate owns gedit

not an ordinary text editor then.. finally, makes more sense.

i did www.yaquds.co.uk in photoshop, and frontpage and standard notepad.

Im not a beginner ion websites, though amatuer, i do run many websites which are live, it just doesnt makes sense that someone would use standard text editor like notepad to right ahref codes, and tables and stuff, if we were to race to make a simple table with images and links you would prbably take an hour whereas id take two minutes in dreamweaver. pretty silly huh?

    as salamu alaikum,

it's not about being faster, its about writing codes using your own hands When you write code yourself, it's much more easier to read and you have greater control of the design of the site. it takes more time, definitely, but in the end it's more relief to say "yeah, I made that."

Actually, I bet it wouldn't take me much longer to make the table...but any problems or any things I'd like to change, I
bet I'd be able to do it a lot faster than you e.g. making it
    standards compliant, then "MSIE compliant"

And they are "plain text editors"...they're just not as crap as Notepad.

Thats a definite factor...although its really just because I find doing it "by hand" more efficient and easy. You have more control and can do what you want.

it depends on what platform you are talking about.. unix/linux or windows.. most tools mentioned in this thread so far, won't work on both platforms. For instance, dreamveawer, front page won't work on linux platform. linux platform has its own tools which I don't recommend. Developing web page on windows is lot easier on windows than on linux.

sorry, I didn't read the details on their website, but do they give web hosting w/out ads..? it shouldn't be because it's usually no less than $60-$70 a year to host a website on a commercial web server. How come they would do it for free? they probably don't provide a full web hosting.

    Microsoft.Office.FrontPage.2003.Fast.and.Easy

Relax. Learning how to use Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 is now a breeze. With this book?s easy-to-use instructions, you?ll master the unique FrontPage interface in no time. From building your first basic Web page to working with dynamic content, "Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Fast & Easy" gives you the step-by-step instructions you need to complete your task quickly. Simply look and learn!

    Guide.to.FrontPage.2003

helps beginners learn to create Web sites using Microsoft FrontPage.

    FrontPage.2003.The.Missing.Manual

In today's highly connected world, almost everybody has a web site, from local sewing circles to the world's largest corporations. If you're ready for one of your own, Microsoft's FrontPage 2003 has everything you need to create Web pages. It's true. Your geek friends may howl in contempt if you use FrontPage, but that's because the program has a reputation for spitting out cookie-cutter Web pages with messy, overloaded HTML code that takes forever to load. Not any more.
After listening to complaints, Microsoft has given FrontPage 2003 some pretty advanced features, including an HTML cleanup tool that helps alleviate bloated code, and new support for Macromedia Flash and XML. Now, savvy Web veterans can control as much of the process as they want, and even collaborate on a site with developers who use Dreamweaver, GoLive or other Web authoring tools. Yet, unlike those other tools, FrontPage 2003 still has automated features for beginners who don't know where to start.

There's still one flaw, though. Microsoft's idea of a user manual is a flimsy pamphlet. But that's easily solved. FrontPage 2003: The Missing Manual offers you everything from the basics to meaty sections on advanced tasks. Our book puts the program's features in context, with clear and thorough chapters that provide valuable shortcuts, workarounds, and just plain common sense, no matter where you weigh in on the technical scale. With it, you can learn to build simple Web pages, or sophisticated ones with tables and Cascading Style Sheets, and find out how to manage and publish a Web site. You'll also learn to create forms, work with databases, and integrate FrontPage with Microsoft Office.

If you haven't worked with Web pages before, each chapter provides "Up to Speed" sidebars with useful background information. If you do have experience, the "Power Users' Clinic" sidebars offer advanced tips and insights. You won't find tips like those in the pamphlet, or even in the Help file. FrontPage: The Missing Manual gives you the complete lowdown on the program above and beyond any book on the market.
