As Salam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah,
The best time for tahajjud is the last third of the night. It is sunnah to perform up to 13 rakaat (including the witr). You can do as little as 2 if you want. It is not quantity that matters but quality.
It is sunnah to recite long suwar in tahajjud but if you do not know any long suwar, you should simply recite whatever you know and if you finish all that you know, you can repeat whatever you wish.
According to the majority of the ulama, reading from the mushaf while in salaah is at very best makrooh and some call it haram.
There is no salaah if you are simply listening to a device that is playing such as a MP3 player, radio, CD player, computer, etc.
The Qur'an says: "recite whatever is easy for you".
The most important thing in ANY salaah is khushu, not length. You are holding intimate conversation with your Rabb.
