Before buying dates this Ramadhan, check the label and ensure they are not a produce of ISRAEL, WEST BANK or the JORDAN VALLEY! If that is what the label says then it is highly likely that they were grown on illegal settlements by Israelis.

Do not forget your brothers and sisters in Palestine, left with little to open their fasts with since they were evicted from their homes, their houses were destroyed and their land stolen. Supporting the purchase of these dates increases Israeli income, which according to some estimates, accounts for 15% of exports to the EU gaining about €80m (£66m) profits annually.i In fact, it is reported that Israel pocketed $265m (£168m) (global) profit in 2011 alone.ii Israel produce half of the worlds medjoul dates.iii Consequently, aiding Israeli occupation and the oppression of innocent Palestinians. An alternative to this is to support Palestinian farmers who produce the very same dates. One such organisation can be found here: http://www.zaytoun.org/.

Israeli settlements are illegal under international law, yet Israel has managed to build well over 230 settlements in the West bank alone.iv Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister summarises, “We are building in Jerusalem because it is our right and our duty to this generation and future generations, not as punishment but as the basic right of our people to build in its eternal city,"v The United Nations has repeatedly upheld the view that Israel's construction of settlements constitutes violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The International Court of Justice also says these settlements are illegal, and no foreign government supports Israel's settlements.

Produce from illegal settlements should therefore not be sold in the UK. However, Israel has tactfully misleading labels to hide the fact that they export vast amounts of fresh produce every year. ‘Produce of West bank’, for example, may lead consumers to wrongfully believe that they are a produce of Palestinians.

The Co-operative Group has become the first major European supermarket group to end trade with companies that export produce from illegal Israeli settlements.
Hilary Smith, Co-op member and Boycott Israel Network (BIN) agricultural trade campaign co-ordinator, said the Co-op "has taken the lead internationally in this historic decision to hold corporations to account for complicity in Israel's violations of Palestinian human rights We strongly urge other retailers to take similar action."vi

Sainsbury’s on the other hand, clearly sells dates produced by the company Mehadrin, well known for being involved in sourcing fresh produce from settlements. FOA (Friends of al-Aqsa) is also asking campaigners to write to Sainsbury's and avoid shopping there till they comply.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa salam), has been reported to say, “He who buys the stolen property, with the knowledge that it was stolen, shares in the sin and shame of stealing.” (Bayhaqi)

On the 21st of June, Friends of al-Aqsa are calling for ‘National Check the Label Boycott Israeli dates day’.vii The idea is to campaign strongly on this day and raise awareness in preparation for Ramadhan , the time when many Muslims unknowingly purchase Israeli dates. Flyers are being distributed to bring light to which brands originated from Israel, including:

Jordan Plains

Jordan Valley

Mehadrin

Jordan River

King Solomon Dates

Hadiklaim

Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA) are inviting people to join their campaign to raise awareness through pamphleting, Facebook and Twitter. Further details can be obtained from http://checkthelabel.org.uk/
My question is, is a woman allowed to travel to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia alone without a mahram? Reason being is I have to unfortunately resit exams that take place 2 days after I am due to go Umrah with my parents. To change the date forward would cost £115 each. So it would make sense if I travelled to Jeddah airport alone where I would be met by my parents.

Would the Saudis allow this?

Sorry for the bad wording, its been a long day :)
The Holy Prophet (May Allah shower His blessings and peace be on him) recommended Salat-ul- Lail (Night Prayers) in Ramadan and emphasized on it. The correct view is that Taraweeh and Tahajjud Prayers are two separate kinds of Salah, the former for just after Esha prayers, only in #Ramadan, the later in the last third part of night, throughout the year.
PREPARING FOR RAMADAN 2013

Have you ever wondered why it is difficult to concentrate in your prayer? Or why your faith throughout the year is not on a high like it is during Ramadan or through Hajj? Maybe it is because we usually jump straight from a phone conversation into Takbir or because we just go with the flow in Ramadan and are influenced by the environment around us and not our own ‘real’ feelings.
A lot of us usually live life and have our faith dependent on an upcoming major event i.e. “I’m going to start reading a page of Quran a day as soon as Ramadan starts; I’m going to start praying Qiyam every night when I come back from hajj; or, I’m going to stop smoking when my child is born.” And because of this way of thinking we usually end up with an anticlimax; we don’t end up giving up smoking, we don’t end up praying Qiyam and we start reading Quran but then get back to our normal old self after a few days or weeks.
This is because these ‘statements’ or ‘feelings’ are based on impulse and not a real thought out plan. We usually don’t prepare for Ramadan or hajj or have a plan for our faith to stay at the increase; we just go with the flow and expect it all to happen. Well, it doesn’t!

Wouldn’t you love to enter the month of Ramadan on a real high and have the effects of this beautiful month be a permanent impact on your life thereafter? How can this be done? Join Eaalim's FREE Online Event:

Hello,

We have been commissioned by Channel 4 to deliver a special documentary season for the month of Ramadan. There will be various events surrounding Ramadan, and at the core of the season a series of 3 minute films, broadcast at 7.55pm every day, starting the day before Ramadan.

Each short documentary film will feature a different story shot during Ramadan itself. Using footage gathered by us, plus self shot videos from participants, the idea is to immerse the viewer into the world of fasting and give them an insight into what Ramadan is, as well as what it means to be Muslim in Britain today. A spectrum of everyday life and interesting characters will be on display, the cast drawn from as wide as possible a range of Muslims across Britain, including some well known faces. Every film will tell a different story about the reality of Ramadan from a different perspective.

We're also looking for other stories, such as finding the oldest Muslim, or perhaps someone who has fasted over 70 years. An expectant mother due to give birth during the month of Ramadan. Or even a diabetic Muslim who would like to fast but can’t, or that is fasting this year. We're looking for Muslims of different background, are you an Eastern European, Somalian or Bosnian Muslim? We’re looking for families that have 5 generations to see how they might be observing Ramadan. We’re looking at Muslims in a variety of professions, how does Ramadan affect your work routine? Will you be putting some bad habits to bed, such as Technology? Social Media? TV? Smoking? Partying? We’d love to hear from a variety of different people with different stories on how they’re observing Ramadan.

If you are interested or know anyone that might be we’d really appreciate it if you could display or forward and help to spread the word throughout the Muslim community. Any help or advice you are able to offer would be much appreciated.

We are contactable on by email: farah.qayum@watershedtv.co.uk OR farrah.solim@watershedtv.co.uk or phone 0203 3017884 / 0203 301 8440

We hope to hear from you soon and are very much looking forward to hearing your Ramadan Story.

Many thanks,
