APPEAL TO HELP WITH UNIVERSITY FEES FOR "RICIN PLOTTER"
This is an appeal for your help to send a young man called Sidali
Feddag to university. Sidali has an unconditional offer of a place
to read Law at Birkbeck College, University of London from October
2006, but £3180 needs to be raised for his fees.
At 17, Sidali Feddag was arrested and wrongly accused in the so
called 'ricin plot'. He was held on remand in HMP Belmarsh for two
and a half years, before his acquittal in April 2005. Both US and
UK governments used the allegations in the case to justify the Iraq
war, but the longest Old Bailey trial in history found that there
was no ricin and no plot. Sidali was caught in the middle in this
highly politically charged case (see Press Reports for articles
about Sidali and the case). Since Sidali was a minor, he could not
be held with adult prisoners, and was kept in a solitary cell.
Totally innocent, he regularly spent 23 hours a day locked up alone
from the ages of 17 to 20. However, let's forget compensation and
counselling. The UK government wants to deport Sidali to Algeria,
where he was born, to face the kind of imprisonment without trial
and torture for which the Algerian government is infamous.
Although Sidali had been out of education for several years, he
enrolled on an Access Course, which he completed with top grades.
He has applied and has been accepted for a Law Degree at Birkbeck.
While his asylum case is unresolved, Sidali has to pay overseas
university fees, which are several times higher than those for UK
or EU students. With your support he can fulfil his ambition of
becoming a lawyer, insha'Allah.
Any donation towards his tuition fees would be much appreciated.
