View Full Version : A message from a non Muslim

As a non-muslim, I have been trying to discover the truth about the faith of Islam so I can form my own, non media influenced view.

I came across this forum, and, with some scepticism, started to read some of the posts, expecting to have confirmed all that I have read in the press. The first post I read was from a girl who had been invited to a 'leaving do' in work. I have to say that, with my ignorance of Islam, I couldn't see the problem so, I moved on.

I then followed a link to a site about successful marriage. I read down the paragraphs expecting to see much of the hackneyed opinions that we westerners get fed through the press. I was quite surprised when I read about the recommendations and found myself agreeing almost entirely with the texts. I was almost peculiarly disappointed when I couldn't substantiate any of the claims made in the western press of the oppression of women in Islam. I was beginning to form the essence of an alternate opinion so I read on............I found a thread about jihad of the eyes and again, found myself agreeing with most of the text about low western moral standards and the constant obsession with sexual gratification.

I have a great deal more reading to do before I form my opinion but, already, I am beginning to understand Islam's viewpoints on moral and ethical issues and the reasons why us westerners don't understand or misinterpret Islamic behaviour as hostile or sinister. I must say, that I have to agree with Islam's viewpoint so far.

It is only when I read the purity of some of the text that I realised how we in the west must be viewed by muslims with highly religious conviction and how our behaviour is considered vile and disgusting by those people. I am a fairly typical British person and have to agree that our standards certainly have fallen into the gutter. I cannot imagine how we must be viewed from the position of a devout individual.

Ignorance, as usual, is the greatest demon that faces both the nations of Islam and the west. I think that us Westerners are so lazy and impatient, that we cannot be bothered to discover the truth for ourselves and instead, we trust the words of a corrupt and partisan press to bring us a distorted truth. If only we had the motivation to find the truth out for ourselves, then we would find a different 'truth'.

The people of the west and the people of the Islamic faith must guard against untruths conveyed by media influenced by people with an ulterior motive. Our gullible population can be easily influenced by a combination of impressive words and slick marketing. Even the venerable BBC cannot be trusted!

The world will find peace if the people who live in the world decide to search for the truth themselves and stop being manipulated by those with a hidden agenda, feeding lies through their corrupt media.

My reading of posts on this site has sown a seed of doubt about the motives of the western media. What I have read here is almost opposite to what the press would have us all believe! I think that the press particularly, have stirred up great fear and resentment between the various groups and it's a shame that we all believe it.

Up until now..........

"Whosoever wishes to know about the world must learn about it in its particular details.
Knowledge is not intelligence.
In searching for the truth be ready for the unexpected.
Change alone is unchanging.
The same road goes both up and down.
The beginning of a circle is also its end.
Not I, but the world says it: all is one.
And yet everything comes in season."

- Heraklietos of Ephesos

A very warm welcome to you Howie!
I'm glad you've taken the first step towards freeing your mind which is uncovering the myth imposed onto you by modern mainstream media and head of governments
As John F. Kennedy said :

The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest -- but the myth -- persistent, persuasive and unrealistic

The posts on this forum can not give you the full, clear and objective picture of islam if you wish to know more about what a muslim is SUPPOSED to be like (because the sad truth is that many muslims do indeed have a part in upholding this wrong picture of islam because they mix culture and old traditions with islam!!)- if you truly wish to know then get some quality literature etc.
What you will find here in my opinion is a whole bunch of happy, crazy, normal, down-to-earth ppl - and then some ignorant narrowminded crackheads too of course (non muslims as well as muslims)
And basically realize that we are humans!!!

Enjoy

Peaceful greetings your way:)

That's a great story Howie.. it's amazing how going out to seek more knowledge can lead you to more knowledge and to something you can make sense of. The media can indeed control the thoughts of everyone by delivering one sided stories and manipulating the public's opinions. You're lucky to be intelligent enough to go out and find your own truth.

I identified with your story... you see even though I was born into a Muslim culture, its people aren't exactly practising Muslims and therefore did not teach me anything about my religion. I grew up not really believing in anything and I was very much against religion because I thought it messed up the whole world.

In order to argue my point better, I picked up the Bible to find flaws in it. Unfotunately I didn't get on well with understanding most of it, so I thought I'd pick up the Qur'an instead. I found myself finally understanding life, ethics, morals, etc. And I'm very happy to say that I've decided to practice my religion, even though I prefer to call it a way of life.
It's taken me my whole lifetime to reach this point, I feel isolated from my family and culture, but I wouldn't have it any other way, this has become my jihad, and I also have a lot to learn. This has been my first Ramadhan, I am still in the process of learning Salat, but Allah will show me guidance like he has so far.

Good luck in your quest Howie and I hope you can inspire the people around you also.

welcome howie! its nice to see that someone got that much good from the forum.

(poor cashew only gets more confusion... guess it depends on the individual, huh?...

OK, smartypants, you want to explain to Howie the whole "calculation of Muslim holy days" and "moon-sightings in Saudia Arabia vs. regional/local moonsightings" issues in a way that a non-Muslim can easily understand? (Don't forget to also explain the social, ethnic, and political implications of these issues!)

When you're done with that, you can try something relaxing and simple like explaining the evolution of the Alawites in the 10th century. (Please feel free to use diagrams and charts!) While you're at it, you might as well explain the differences between the Sunni and Shia approaches to hadith and sharia.

Sheesh!:D

Of course Islam seems simple at the beginning. All religions seem simple at first glance. But when you move past the surface, you encounter a vast world of knowledge, thought, and debate.

I mean, there is a reason, after all, that many thousands of Muslims devote their entire lives to the study of Islam.
