marking christians and jews

Maybe my question was lost cos it's in a different thread..

Please can someone show me where in the qur'an or hadeeths it says that Christians and Jews must be marked with stars and crosses in a dhimmi state or under a caliphate .. or did this only start with the caliphate in the middle of the 8th century?
