1. EVERYONE

a. Subscribe to our weekly mailing list. This will ensure that you are up to date with the latest news, articles and action alerts. We do not buy, sell or forward lists of email addresses nor solicit email lists from other groups. Our list is an 'opted in' list; you are free to remove yourself from the list at any time. Also register and actively participate in our discussion forum.

b. Respond to our action alerts and partake in our campaigns Encourage your communities to participate by raising money, writing to politicians, to prisoners, organising and attending events and signing petitions.

c. Write to the prisoners and their families. Remind them that they are not forgotten and to boost their morale. Show them that people still care and are campaigning on their behalf. Make it a particular practice to write to them on festive occasions, such as the Muslim celebration of ‘Eid. You can send money to some of the prisoners which can help them to purchase small items or extra provisions. In some cases you can send other items (books, posters, audios etc) to the prisoners. Similarly, you can show your support to the former detainees who have been scarred by their years in detention and are struggling to adjust to life on the outside, by corresponding with them and sending gifts.

d. Inform others. This can be done in a variety of ways – by word of mouth, fliers, email lists, discussion forums. Reproduce and distribute our articles, either by email or by printing them out. See below for further ways on how you can motivate others. Email us a mailing address for copies of our fliers – view our flier here.

f. Supplement Our Content. Help us to build the most comprehensive resource on this subject. Send us any articles, news items, religious verdicts, essays from a legal or Islamic perspective, legal documents, audio-visual material, images or details of events that we may have missed. You can also assist us in building our timeline and our prisoner database. Our site is a reference point for defence lawyers and activists so any contributions you make will be far-reaching. Send us any corrections too.

e. Support Hhugs. This is a charity set-up to support the families of prisoners who are struggling to make ends meet and who often have to raise numerous children single-handedly. You can also contribute towards the legal costs by following the steps in our various campaigns. Organise fund-raising activities to facilitate this. If you are in the UK, you can provide practical and emotional assistance to the former detainees and their families by volunteering to work with HHugs . If you are outside the UK, try to set up a similar initiative to provide support to those in your locality who have been affected in the same way. Contact them for more details.

g. Pray for the prisoners and their families. Muslims ought to take advantage of the places and times when supplication are answered such as: in prostration, in the last third of the night, in the last hour before sunset on Friday, while travelling, while fasting, during the rites of hajj and ‘umrah. They should also try to observe the etiquettes of supplications to increase the likelihood of their supplications being responded to.

If a member of your family or one of your acquaintances have been detained, ask them to contact us as we need their help in order to help the detainees. We can assist them in organising legal representation or raise the profile of their case.

2. FAMILIES

a. Raise these issues in families gatherings.

b. Have a charity collection box in the house and encourage children to be generous and self-sacrificing.

c. Remind the family about the virtues of assisting the oppressed.

d. Include in your domestic library books, pamphlets and audio-visual material on these topics.

e. Encourage your children with the appropriate aptitude to enter non-traditional fields e.g. media and the arts, so that they can assist others in alternative ways.

Please email examples of what you do.

f. Encourage your children to make cards for the prisoners, former detainees and their families. Scan their artworks and send them to our postal address.

3. JOURNALISTS, WRITERS AND INTELLECTUALS

a. Write articles exposing the reality of this current "war on terror" as well as refuting the doubts, misgiving and sometimes lies of the authorities.

b. Support all articles and reports with pictures, sourced evidences, statistics and direct quotations.

c. Hold conferences, seminars and lectures both on an academic and popular level. Advertise them well in advance on our forums.

d. Simplify complicated legal and political issues to the layman with the aid of diagrams, interactive shockwave programmes and so on - so that their confusion doesn't hold them back from participating.

e. Express your concerns in poetry or fictional prose.

Current needs: Shockwave guide on Guantanamo as on the Guardian website.

4. PROFESSIONALS IN THE EDUCATION FIELD

a. Make these issues a concern for your pupils.

b. Encourage your pupils to assist the oppressed in whatever way they can.

c. Make time for discussions and brain-storming around these issues.

d. Never underestimate the enthusiasm of your pupils for this cause, even the least able ones.

e. Ask them to do a project, essay or presentation on the topic. They can use material from our site to assist them.

f. Simplify and explain facts.

g. Encourage pupils to write or send cards to prisoners and to write to their politicians as a class exercise .

See here for examples of children’s works.

Current needs:

We want to make available on our site lesson plans for teachers (similar to what can be found in the Education supplement of the Guardian newspaper) that explain the Guantanamo issues to school children at different stages.

Examples of teacher packs made by other organisations can be found at the following links:

http://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/resources/education-pack/pdf/teaching-pack.pdf

Please email us the contents or link of an existing source, or indeed a specially designed one.

5. IMAMS, SCHOLARS, PREACHERS AND ISLAMIC COMMUNITY LEADERS

a. Write an easy-to-read article for the mosque noticeboard.

b. Give fatawa (legal verdicts) explaining to your congregation the obligations of Muslims towards their unjustly detained brethren around the world, and the punishment for abandoning them. Many Christian organisations have superseded Muslim communities in highlighting and campaigning for the Guantanamo Bay prisoners.

c. Devote a study circle, Friday sermon or reminder spot for this issue. Record them and send them to us to upload. Email us for guidance on how to do this.

d. Open up mosques for other Muslim and non-Muslim organisations to have presentations and events.

Current needs:

We want to make available on our site more lectures and verdicts by scholars on Guantanamo Bay and related issues.

6. ARTISTS, DESIGNERS & PROGRAMERS

a. Contact us if you have experience in producing non-interactive Flash movies, with audio background. Flash presentations encourage others to learn about the oppressed prisoners in an easy, inspiring way. You can provide samples or links to samples of Flash movies that you have already made

b. Produce static and animated banners for our site for our “Link to us” page.

c. Express your concern for the cause through your art. Send or scan your cartoons and art works to us for publication on the site.

d. Help us to produce fliers and leaflets for our site and for various campaigns or events.

7. OTHER PROFESSIONALS

a. Donate generously to the HHUGS charity

b. Volunteer your services in aid of the unjustly detained in whatever way.

c. Send us any relevant articles in professional or specialist magazines to help us make the best information resource on this topic.

8. STUDENTS

a. Publicise our site with fliers, posters and regular postings of news.

b. Organise events.

c. Reprint interviews and articles in student publications.

d. Get your student union to make a firm stance against the Guantanamo Bay detentions as well as the use of illegal imprisonment in this so-called ‘war on terror’.

9. INTERNET USERS

a. Circulate information on discussion boards, chat services, emails and so on. Avoid simply pasting lengthy articles as this is more likely to put others off the cause. A little effort used in making the text more attractive and easier to read, plus personalised comments, will be more productive.

For good examples see:-

b. Use a banner, preferably with a link to http://www.cageprisoners.com in your email or forum signatures.

c. Add our site to your links section or place our banner on your site. Click here for a selection of our banners and instructions on how to add them to your site.

d. Distribute multimedia links and upload them across the internet.

10. TRANSLATORS

Please contact us if you can translate from Arabic into English and English into Arabic. We are looking for individuals who are either native Arab speakers with at least A level/IB/pre-university level of English or those who have studied Arabic for at least one year full time, together with at least A level/IB/pre-university level of English. We require a high level of both Arabic and English since we sometimes require translation of poetry, anasheed and lectures that contain a high level of literary Arabic. If you think that you meet this criteria, please provide samples of previous translations and how much time you can dedicate. We are also looking for individuals who have translation skills in any of the other languages spoken by detainees in Guantanamo to support the work that the lawyers are doing.
