the processor might not be able to keep cool enough...
When it overheats it just automatically switches off to save from melting...

turn it on and go to the cpu temp...see what temp it starts at and if it increase a lot after a minute or two...
if so you need a stronger fan...or more fans or something to cool it down...

Does Your Computer Have Two Fans?

It might be burnt out and need replacing.

Salman if you are running windows XP then when you start your computer up press the "Delete" key to go into the config section,in one of those parts it has "Computer shutdown temp" make sure it is disabled,it might be that.

MMS
22-07-06, 06:24 PM
give it some ice cream to cool it down

Ar-Raya
22-07-06, 06:25 PM
the shut down at a certain temp in the config is there so that u don't get corrupted data...it would be better to just get a better cooling unit...

Open the sides(this is if it's a tower)..and run it...touch where the cpu is...from the outside...If it is extremely hot then u need some more fans inside...or a stronger/bigger cpu fan

LOL, good point :embar:

erm.. maybe a mice crawled into it and ate up one of the cables and so it is barely staying together and thus keeps switching off? :D

ahem

yeh, or it could just be that you need a new fan for your processor.

As Salaamu Alaikum,

Like others before me, I agree it does seem to be the CPU, that or the RAM or Hard Drive. But because you mentioned the fan stopping, I presume the CPU would also have turned off.

The Thermal Grease may need to be replaced. It is your cheapest bet, failing that you need to look into ways of getting better cooling on your system. Again good Thermal Grease, Heatsink and if you want to go a little over the edge, maybe add a few extra Fans, but before doing so make sure to check your Case & Motherboard can accommodate for it.

My uncle had a similar problem recently, putting a little new Thermal Grease was sufficient.

I hope this helps.

If you have had your PC for a longtime then the most likely cause is dust.
The best thing to do is to open up your PC and if there is an accumlation of dust, just brush of off (gently).

I got the blue screen of death a few times 2 days ago... the only reason I can think of was that it was too hot for the hardware to cope.

With the thermostat, motherboards are designed to switch off when it detects its getting hot to prevent hardware from burnin' up. But this shud also stop the PSU, which isn't in Salmans case.

Salman, did you get a blue screen of death? or did the PC restart itself?

Pull out the kettle lead at the back and put it back in again.

Salman Al-Farsi
23-07-06, 01:11 PM
There is no blue screen or anything, the systen itself is in tip top.

BAsically it just switches off. Yesterday it was allowing me to go into windows and shutting down time was 10 mins after booting. However now its 1 min and less.

Basically, there is power in the computer but the CPU fan stops BUt the power supply fan is running.

ITs the probably the case that it heated up. Yesterday I opened it and allwd it to cool down with the portable fan.

But now it wont even let me go in the bios, ie doesnt give me enough time to find the right options.

I only have two fans, the CPU fan and the power supply fan.
If the CPU fan initially runs and then stops.. does that mean its blown and all I need is a new cpu fan?

Anyway, how do i check the temperature?

I have a BIG problem, I have VERY important files in that computer basically my work projects and stuff and I need to access those asap. I can take the HD disk out and put it in my dad's computer but because I have user login password thing it wont let me access thsoe files. :(

what a nightmare :(

you guys are really good.

please help

As Salaamu Alaikum,

You switch on your computer, and soon after the CPU fan stops, yet the power supply is still on. Strange, that would mean the Motherboard is still on, is the Motherboard light still on when the CPU fan goes off?

Without the CPU fan functioning properly your CPU will overheat, and will eventually get burnt, making it useless.

any other idea?Ok, well you said that the fan is malfunctioning - Thats a start. How old is your PC btw?

Make sure that your fan connector is properly connected, don't put the case back on but turn the PC on to see if the fan stops working. If it does then you'll need a new fan. Don't turn the PC on either tell you have installed a new fan.

But now it wont even let me go in the bios, ie doesnt give me enough time to find the right options. When the PC does switch off, you leave it off for around 15-20minutes otherwise it will switch off more often.

Ok, switch off the PC, disconnect from mains, open the case, then ensure the fan cable is connected properly. Then turn the PC on (don't put the case back on) and see if the fan functions properly. If not, then you'll need a new one.

We will need to know the socket type too - Therefore download this file (http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-135.zip), and run the cpuz.exe file. Then copy/paste the info on the 'Package' row.

Have you added any new hardware recently?

Try this, grab a large fan you use at home for summers, open case, turn the fan on and allow the wind to blow onto the computer parts. Then turn the comp. on and see how long the computer lasts before it shuts down.

He soaked himself in estrus hormone and waited while his wife manned the camera. The buck came in looking for love and instead found a human and being in the rut, it attacked him. Deer during the rut have been known to be so aggressive, they have been known to charge cars on occasion

Ok, as a user suggested I think you should check for 'bad capacitors'. Here (http://www.auroracomputer.ca/images/bad_cap.jpg) is an image describing bad caps.

What you want to lookout for is

1. If the top part of the caps. is 'bulging'.
2. If there is some sort of liquid being discharged from the top.

I bought a new CPU fan for 9.99 and bought another fan which goes into ISA/PCI slot for £5 and bought the white stuff for 2.99. Spent £18 at Maplins (there is one near my work place).

Anyway came home first thing got the fan out, it already had loads of white stuff on it so didnt bother putting more, installed it, switched it on.. even I could feel the cool air coming out of it.. but sadly just before the windows login screen came it went boom. Then samething, it didnt even last for a minute. :(

I installed the extra fan in in PCI slot.. so now when the computer switches off the power led goes off and the CPU fan stops. But the power supply fan and the extra fan keep running.

What now? :s

Yes your computer can be saved - Its a common problem.
Basically you'll have to remove the current ones and replace them with new ones. Since your not a computer expert I wouldn't recommend you doing it, rather take it to someone who can. It shouldn't cost alot, as all that is required is some new caps (cost few pounds), a soldering iron and a special drill.

The worst possible scenerio is that some of the substance (from underneath the caps) has leaked onto the motherboard causing permanent damage. Then you'd have to replace the motherboard. But as your system is pretty old it shouldn't cost that much.

Btw, don't use or turn on the PC in that time.

I think your CPU has had it.

I remember my PC kept switching off too. Sent it to maplin for testin' and they found it to be faulty.

Remove all hardware from your PC except ram, cpu / fan, / mouse / keyboard / monitor.

Remove pci cards, usb devices etc... disconnect the floppy drive / cd-rom. Boot with the minimum devices attached and see what happens.

What now? :s

As Salaamu Alaikum,

Personally, I don't see how the USB could be related, even if it was broke. Your computer would still be working, save the USB.

yeh, very strange.

Thigns is I am always busy, so I got my bro to take it to repairs. Its been two days, I asked my bro yesterday about whats happening and he said he spoke to engineer who said there is something wrong with USB connection. argghh

even though I explained everything to my brother, he didnt go to the repair shop himself but sent one of his wokers some freshie dude who cant even speak english properly, so I doubt he explained the problem to the engineer. I was gonna have a go at my bro for doing that but then just allowed it.

if I didnt have important stuff in there I would ve buried the darn thing alive. :(

NO I dont think i would pray the Janazah. His name is Theodore, even though I made him say the Shahadah and it used to recite the Quran to me, I reckon he was really a munafiqh cuz he back stabbed me when I needed him the most.

take out the hard drive, if you get a blue screen when it restarts and here a clicking noise, your hard drive has an issue.
or it could be overheating and the system automatically switches off.

Salman Al-Farsi
02-08-06, 11:59 AM
there is no blue screen or anything.

the engineer said motherboard needs replacing so im probably just gonna buy a new comp next week whenever i get a chance.

i m gonna try the hd in another comp to retrieve the data.. so if it is the hd it should give probs to the other pc is well. i guess

yeah I think the computer is pretty much dead :S

my little cousin works for PCworld, she gets discount and she said she can get me a Pentium 3.4 Packard bell for £290. I am considering that at the moment but then this IT guy told me they use cheap parts.

so I am considering to get the parts and make it myself. I made one years ago but back then I was more up to scratch with technology nad there were only a few diff types of motherboards and cpu types.

I wanna do it again, but not sure if I will have the time to do it.

how about compaq? Nooooooooo, I had a compaq before Jumbo.. don't do it!

Go and find my threads in General about building a comp, they tell you all you need to know.. make it yourself, it'll take you a few hours assembling it (and it may take weeks or months deciding which parts to buy :p ) but it's worth it :hidban:

my little cousin, she really knows about computers and stuff and she works in PCworld, so I am gonna pop down there tomorrow and see what she can sort me out with.. and she gets the discount is well :)

Hopefully I should have a new pc for weekend. See, what I hate about new pc's is that you have to install tonnes of softwares on it.. and arggh I dont even think I got all the softwares on cd :S My old pc had everything where I needed, its gonna take ages before the new pc becomes like the old one :(
