I would have to disagree with this post. I have found the below software to be the best, at least for me.

Spyware and Adware

SpyBot S&D

Ad-Aware SE

Anti-virus

AVG

Firewall

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall

Zone Alarm is also good, even the free edition

I use Macfee. Never had a problem with it so far. ANd if you have an O/S that runs on Linux, your safer. Its the microsoft O/S that messes up peoples computers.. jewish conspiracy maite.

All Norton products are not very good for any computer. When you go to uninstall them it is nearly impossible to get rid of all the files, even when you use the program they provide to remove them. Norton products are also huge drainers of computer resources (speed, memory, etc). There are ALOT better FREE products available that don't even stand up to Norton. I would suggest you check them out.

Browser:
Using firefox alone greatly reduces the chances of getting certain adwares/trojans. Opera 9 looks good. Netscape still trying but whatever.
Basically just try not to use IE at all.

Antivirus:
Everyone has their own taste. Personally I liked EZ Anti-Virus , where i'd get a full year's service free from microsoft's site (microsoft.com/protect).

Currently though, I use norton anti-virus 10 because my college gives it free to all students. If you're in a american university/college, check your college's site, they might be giving free subscription.

Firewall:
If you're on broadband, most likely you have a router and almost all routers have built in firewall protection. Using a free one like Zone alarm is pretty good for stopping outbound connections. You're router will filter out the inbound connections. Even without a software firewall you are fine aslong as you have a router and the cheap windows built-in firewall.

Adware/Spyware:
Basically what the other person said, Ad-aware and Spybot: search & destroy.

But also HijackTHIS! That program is sweet. There are certain spywares/adwares that can't be taken out with these programs but for those, you can atleast you hijackThis to find the name of the program and then just google it. Most likely theres a manual or specific program to remove that. Then just run adaware/spybot/hijackthis! to do one more check

The easiest solution comes in two format:
Get rid of Windows and use MacOS/Linux/Solaris/QNX/BeOS/Hurd/Atheos/SkyOS/MorphOS you name it, just not Windows.

OR

Use Firefox and watch what you download.

Good post Belal1. I use Opera browser and like it for the most part. I previously used Internet Explorer. There is really no comparison. If your using IE, you need to switch to anything else, most preferably Opera or Mozilla FireFox.

I've been using Avast AV (free version) and Spybot S & D for more than 2 years now and I'm very happy with those two. I don't use any other software except those two and never had a problem :)

yes indeed. I've been using Kubuntu 6.10 for a week now. Still have not managed to get an internet connection due to the fact I have to recompile some ueagle-atm driver to make it compatible with my sagem fast 800 usb modem. But I am getting there. Soon I will be 100% linux :torture:
