Basically its my brothers...not workin on hes PC..so hooked it up on laptop and same problem. Exactly what you said....PC recognises the drive, but no files are shown even though drive size suggests there are files on there...[urs sounded better!]
What do I do??

If it was hooked up to your laptop and working fine, then try doing a system restore (to an earlier date when ur laptop was recognising ur external hard drive) on it see if that solves the problem.

Hmm..bro..used to work fine mnths ago...now its stopped working on pc and laptop.
I tried this: Go to Control Panel-->Administrative
tools-->Computer Management-->Disk Management, then change the your
Removable Disk (on the right bottom of the dialog window, just right click
it to change) to another drive letter so it wouldn't conflict with the
existing ones ...
But still aint working.
Got a few more stuff to try then will give up and let someone else atke over
:torture: @computers!

1. Plug the HD into a different usb port.
2. Right Click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management - Check to see if the external HDD is displaying 'Healthy'.
3. Click My Computer > Right Click External HD > Properties > Tools > Error Checking.
Report back.

Theres a good piece of software called 'Recover My files' that u can use to attempt to recover the files...
Did you check to see if the external HD was 'Healthy'? The partition tables of the hard disk may have been corrupted or deleted. This means that although the data is there, you can't see it.
I accidently deleted a partition on my PC a few weeks ago. It didn't delete the data, but the partition tables renderin' the partition inoperable. The files were there, I was able to recover some usin' Recover My Files. This was on my primary hard disk.
I used Partition Table Doctor 3.5 to correct the tables and restore the partition and I was able to boot to it again.

Looks like the file system/P-Table is corrupt.
Download PC Inspector File Recovery (http://download.pcinspector.de/pci_filerecovery.exe) / install (ensure drive has been connected) then run. Goto Object/Drive, select the external hard disk (removable disk) and press the green tick button. If you find your files save them to your HDD (right click/Save to).

I did research with data recovery software and found recover my files to be the best...
But its still a laborious procss dependin' on the size of data... but I still think the solutions is simple... come tomorrow, cheeky will prolly be able to connect to it again... after a reboot...
Anyways, here's Recover My files.
