I was watching Islam Q&A programme on Islam Channel recently and one of the callers asked the following question:
"Is it okay to have a Qur'an "khatham" (gathering) i.e reading Qur'an, Durood Shareefs and other recitations on an annual basis for a loved one that has died. Specific plates of food such as fruit, dates and water is placed in front of the gatherers during the recitations which is then eaten first because it is now considered blessed food".??
I know many people in my community who do this and they say it is meant for rememberance of Allah (swt) also so that the person who has passed away is forgiven for his/her sins. I have been told that this is an innovation and therefore bid'ah because in the time of the Prophet (saw), this was not done. Is this an innovation??
When I was trying to explain to one of my friends why it was an innovation, they said that its the intention behind the deed and is a good thing so how can it be a bad thing. No matter how hard I tried to explain that it was an "addition" to Islam, they were extremely offended.
Please can someone help with this and provide sound Hadiths/references etc.
