Adaptation of a Rumi short story by Karim Alrawi, the Anglo-Egyptian playwright. Cost £5 (£4 concessions) First showing at 10am
"One day a little girl wakes up to find the brightness gone from heart. In the mirror she sees that her usually radiant smile has disappeared. From the window she notices that even the brightness of the sky has disappeared. What could have happened? Based on the book by Karim Alrawi, The Girl who Lost her Smile tells us of the day when gloom fell over Baghdad. The sun only shines over the city when Jehan smiles and one day the smile and the city fall dark. Even the magic of the glittering stars disappears. The wise hoopoe bird, jugglers, fire-eaters and artists are invited from across the world to try and help. What will help Jehan to uncover the beauty that has always been there?
Karim Alrawi has derived this magical tale from a collection of Islamic stories by the Sufi poet Rumi, the 13th century Persian mystical poet and founder of the whirling dervishes. Rumi's importance transcends national, ethnic and spiritual borders as does this delightful tale.
The Girl who Lost her Smile is presented by tutti frutti productions and York Theatre Royal. Some parents may be familiar with the work of tutti frutti who brought Princess and the Pea to the Town Hall a few years ago. There work is wonderfully playful and enchantingly magical and colourful. With its original music, this show is soul food for all the family
Anyone planning on going to this? I really want to go but won't be able to :(
