ermm on monday went to that jinn talk and like in the talk one of the speakers said that pictures were haraam like...and like if you draw pictures on the day of judgement your going to be asked to blow a soul in to the pitures you drew ...but you will never be able to do so...innit....so ermm i was wondering...like you know all these emoticons like...:hidban::D:up::rolleyes:;):inlove::zzz::tor ture::confused::):(@):nuts::shock::eek::eek3::spun ch: lo00ol yea basically all these emoticons...are we allowed to like use them...cos ermm even though we aint drawing them...were still like ermm using them?!?!?:wacko::scratch::eek3:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The most severely punished of the people on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5950) and Muslim (2109).

Sa’eed ibn Abi’l-Hasan said: I was with Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) when a man came to him and said, O Abu ‘Abbaas, I am a man who lives by what his hands make, and I make these images. Ibn ‘Abbaas said: I will only tell you what I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say. I heard him say: “Whoever makes an image, Allaah will punish him until he breathes life into it, and he will never be able to do that.” The man became very upset and his face turned pale, so said to him, Woe to you! If you insist on making images, then make images of these trees and everything that does not have a soul. [I](Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2112; Muslim, 2110).

i dunno....whether we are allowed or not....Ar-Raya said thats why he said he didnt use em aswell....cos its better to be safe that sorry right? but i dno....

well i can only give my opinion and experience, my husband used to be a cartoonist and animater before we began practising, he looked into whether it was halal to continue his career in animation and found that NO it was not as it is haram to draw a image of an animated object, eg a face or an animal, (he used to design manga style characters)cars/trees/buildings etc.. are ok, but anything that could have life is a no no and Allahu alam,

Because i know this i avoid using the emotions as they have eyes and faces and often represent something with life.

so fear Allah people and Allah guide us all
and inshaallah Allah reward my wonderful husband for his taqwa and patience, its hard for a creative person to stop being creative, inshaallah Allah will make it easy for him.

Question Assalamu ALiakum I'd like to ask you a question about the pictures -the smiley faces (for example - :-)), the emoticons, that show up in MSN Messenger. This may sound really silly, but its been on my mind, especially since on MSN, they look remarkably like drawings or cartoons. Do they fall under the prohibition of making pictures? I'd like the answer from a Salafi Shaikh with daleel please. Jazak Allaah Khair

Answer I may not be considered a Salafi scholar, but I am a humble brother who is in a position to answer this question. I think it is not Haram fiqh wise to use those symbols which do not show a whole body of a human being. An image, which has a few lines that show a particular emotion, does not constitute a picture of a human being

When we have controversial issues we should remember the hadith:

"Truly, what is lawful is evident, and what is unlawful is evident, and in between the two are matters which are doubtful which many people do not know. He who guards against doubtful things keeps his religion and honour blameless, and he who indulges in doubtful things indulges in fact in unlawful things, just as a shepherd who pastures his flock round a preserve will soon pasture them in it. Beware, every king has a preserve, and the things Allah has declared unlawful are His preserves. Beware, in the body there is a flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt, and behold, it is the heart."

but then this raises another question.. when the prophet muhammad's (saw) wife A'isha (ra) had that cushion or pillow with the animals on it...was that the whole animal or just the face?

yeah I dnt know this confuses me too.. like when I look to my right I see a bunch of emoticons.. everytime I send a message I see these emoticons on my right.. so simply by opening up this page I'm displaying emoticons if that makes sense..

I dnt know.. when we use them we dnt draw them.. they're already there..

Yeh.......they're already there. I am having second thoughts, i mean we are just using them to express our emotions, its not like were drawing them for the sake of drawing them. Dont know whether its ok or not.

I think its just one of those things..

If there is alot of doubt on it best to leave it I guess..

as far as i know its only the sculpturing of living creatures, we cannot make sculptures, as we use pictures/drawings for various reasons of displaying/educating people.

First of all,Rayhana...We follow Qur'an and Sunnah...
That means that we follow the word of Allah ta'ala that was revealed to Mohammed (salalahu alaihi wa salam) through Jibriel(alaihi salam).
And in order to know how to best implement it we look at the life of the Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa salam) as He was the best of men,and set the best example.So we follow the example he set.

It is specifically a drawing having a face that makes it require a soul...
And this goes for non living things as well...Such as making a comic with animated trees that talk to each other...
Or dragons or mythical creatures that don't exist for real( in your argument you might say that these were ok because they don't really exist)...

The thing is that on the day of Judgement you will be asked by Allah ta'ala to blow life into the things that you have drawn that would require life...Such things that are animated and have faces (as this is the common factor of things that have souls)
so even if it is just the head of the smiley face...that is the same thing

The other thing was about choosing to post the smileys and allowing them to load up...DO NOT FOOL YOURSELF INTO THINKING THAT THEY ARE THE SAME THING

You are not in full control of what pop's up on your screen...or for the annoying ad bars etc...
You are judged by your intentions so everytime you choose to add a smiley to your post I'd guess that this would be the action to your intention that was to animate/convey the emotion on your face to the reader...Smileys are sort of a grey area and Allahu Alim if it is haram to add them to posts.
Would you not be very disappointed with yourself if on the day of judgement you were questioned as to why you used smileys...
I don't know about you guys but i would rather be cautious and avoid something that we are unsure of whether it's haram or halal...

If I have spoken the Truth then It is From Allah azawajal and from the hadith of his messanger...And if I have spoken wrongly then it is only from myself and the shaytaan(aoutu billahi manish shaytanir rajeem)
