salaam, i need help with un-installing norton.
using Ad-aware, i found that i've got loadsa adware on the comp, and i quarantined and deleted all the adware results found. but evrytime im logged on to the net, a pop up from norton internet security pops up saying that '(adware name, same as the result from Ad Aware scan)' is attempting to connect to a DNS server. and when i click on one of the options, like block, allow or whatever, the whole screen freezes and then i have to switch off the power button to switch the whole computer off.
i tried un-installing norton, through add/remove programs, but it keeps saying you need supervisor access. so, i tried going on to user accounts (of norton), but it shows the user name, but its in that grey type of colour where u can see it, but not click on it. oh yeah, and everytime i do a new Ad aware scan, it gives me the same results even though i just quarantined and deleted the last results.
does anyone know how to fix any of this?

Are you logged on as the administrator? You know how on XP when you turn on the computer, you can choose a user, the user you logged on must be the 'main' account user, because only they can disable the firewall.

Use this tool to uninstall NAV and restart ur pc.

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Norton-Removal-Tool-Download-26173.html

Norton Internet Security 2005 is the best version to use... its not so intrusive... I wonder if you're usin' version 2006 . I think that may be causin' your prob together with spyware / ad-ware.

Before you've uninstall NAV, make sure u have another AV to hand, and also spyware programs like Zonealarm Pro, Spybot, Ad-aware etc... you will need these to scan your system thereafter.

i've attached the screenshot, and the firewall, isnt the windows one, its the actual norton one.

Basically, the message is sayin' that wgatray.exe is tryin' to run (in this case in the background), do you want to let it run.

If its a system folder as in if it resides in System32, you best let it run automatically. You'll get most of these pop-up messages when you've recently installed AV, spyware or firewall programs... or if you're installin' software, 'cos software components need to be added, and it'll prompt you as to what to do. In these cases yes 'yes' unless the popups warm u of high threat if you allow them, in which case, you don't. :D

Which version of NIS are u usin'.

Guys PLLZZZZ stop using norton > its ****e. Its memory hungry and never uptodate -

use kaspersky...excellent software...searchs for usual suspects as well as ad/spyware and other internet bugs which norton will NEVER find - lots of daily regular updates....

30 day free trial.. (no I dont work for them :D )

Whats the specification of your PC:

CPU Speed:
Ram:
HDD Size:

I'm usin' NIS 2005... I've not had many critical probs with it... Didn't use NIS 2004. I know s/o who has NIS 2006 installed on his PC... don't understand it. NIS 2005 is prolly the best version.

Get yourself a copy of NIS 2005... thats the Internet security package I can vouch for. I had used Panda AV in the past, it was OK. Trend Micro PC Cillin 2003 was good too.

Norton is old news, why don't you uninstall it and install Symantec instead. I'm sure someone has it they can give to you.

does anyone know how to fix any of this?Salaam,

Do you have administrator permissions on your computer?

I find it odd that whenever there is a cry for help norton is somewhere in there. Assuming your running XP, heres the steps to take:

1. Download AVG 7.1 FREE (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/). Do not install at this stage.

2. Now remove norton - It'll somehow cause you problems even if it is working fine. To uninstall norton download norton killer (http://www.house-tech.net:85/Computer%20Tools/Norton%20Killer.zip). Unzip it and run both files in the package.
The .exe file will remove all remaining files and folders that the Un-Install left behind.
The .reg file will remove 1891 registry entries that Norton installs and never removes. Make sure you read the instructions carefully.

3. Reboot your system.
After all that and a reboot, your system should be running a lot better, if its not been permanently corrupted.

4. Make sure windows firewall is running (control panal/Windows Firewall) and install AVG 7.1 FREE. Immediately get updates. More than one may be required. I think you'll find it, as so many already have, a very nice and user friendly Anti-Virus program.

Keep me updated.

thanks for the help guys! :DMake sure you download Spybot S&D (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1) too (if you dont have it already).

When downloading the latest updates you might get a checksum error. If that does happen change the download mirror button (next to 'Search for updates' button), select SecurityWonk.net and re-try.
