if you want to convert to Islam and you are alone in the middle of the desert or the pacific ocean or something, you can do shahada with just Allah as your witness.
the requirement is two Muslim witnesses. however I would not like to say that Allah won't accept your shahada without them, because it is up to Allah. but I would advise having witnesses anyway.
when you become Muslim, you become part of the Muslim community and having witnesses means that you are recognised as Muslim by the other Muslims. The Muslim community has certain obligations, for example if a Muslim in your local community dies, at least one person from the community has to say the funeral prayer for them, if not the sin is on the whole community. so if you have not publicly declared your shahada, the community cannot recognise you in the way that it should.
I know that some people take their shahada online, (particularly if they don't know any other Muslims, except those online) - the first two Muslims to read it online are the witnesses.
Though like I said, I wouldn't say that Allah won't accept someones shahada without witnesses.

I know of several cases of new Muslims taking their shahada like that, I'm not a scholar so I can't give a fatwa on it, but I don't see why you can't do that, especially if there are no Muslims where you live and you only know Muslims on the interent. After all you are declaring your conversion to Islam to at least two Muslim witnesses.
I don't know about an online shahadah but if you telephone a masjid I am sure that they can round up 2 muslims to listen to your shahadah over the phone :D
It worked for me :D

Asalamulaikum
Welcome to the forum , Sister in Islam.
YOuve come to the right place, and will find this forum full of advice and information for people such as yourself. Just take a look at the relevant sections.
And also use the "search" function.
To revert to islam you have to pronounce the shahdah , which is the Islamic Declaration of faith. This is:
lā ilāhā illā-llāhu; muhammadu rasūlu-llāhi
which can be approximately translated as
There is no god but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God.
From what i understand you need TWO Muslims Whitnesses. SO how about going to your local Mosque?
Personaly i would recommend these 2 webisites for you on an introductory level to islam
www.iprofess.com
www.islam-guide.com
and www.inter-islam.org
They cover the basic beliefs of Islam.
Hope that helps... http://www.gawaher.com/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Have to make sure that at least one other muslim was listening besides whoever was doing the show
The question would lie with the person, does the person truely believe in One Allah and His Prophet Mohammad SAW and is there eagerness to gain knowledge in the religion.
Its not just about thinking you can say the shahadah, it can be just mere utterances which does not come from the heart and without understanding.
Therefore i'd say go to a mosque ask for the imaam/sheikh speak to him asking him where u could seek knowlegde in Islam as you are wanting to embrace islam or approach a muslim brother/sister ask him/her. And by learning thats how a person starts living the Shahadah.
And when the person feels his ready to embrace it, then it should be made known to witnesses that the person has accepted the shahadah.
The internet is good for searching and reading up, but its best getting information teacher-student. As on forums you ask 1 question and get 10 different answeres, which will only confuse you.
