XMMS or BMP all the way!! :D :D

And for video its gotta be xine... Might not be the prettiest UI (although you can get nice ones) but for functionality its the best.

xine is more of a backend to a video player. With all the codecs, it can play EVERYTHING. And I mean everything.

xine-ui is the user interface. Its not the prettiest UI in the world but it works.

I use ubuntu linux so getting all the codecs was simply a matter of apt-get-ing them from the repositories. (dunno if they're still there...find out when I upgrade to dapper)

For more info: Ubuntu Linux (http://www.ubuntu.com/), Xine (http://xinehq.de/) and the restricted codecs (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats). (some may not be in the repos anymore, but you can find them elsewhere ;))
