In college a while back, me and a few other muslim students and a teacher were just talking about new muslims and if it was right or not if we refer to someone as a 'new muslim' even though they converted 20 years before. Then a muslim teacher said that the Prophet (SAW) was a new muslim because there was no Islam before him. I was wondering, is this correct or not because they were prophets before him who propagated Islam and so forth although Allah revealed the Qur'an to the Prophet (SAW). Can one say he was a new muslim?

in the time of ignorance, there were very few monotheists, VERY few, it was so bad that the arabs in arabia woudl make idol out of dates, and then worship it, then later when they got hungry, they woudl eat the idols, there was no solid religioun during this time, there was no real ummah.

another story, they used to call the propeht muhamamd sallahu alayhi wa salaam before he recived revelation, "al amin" or the truth, after he recived revelation, he said there was no god but allah, and that he is a mesenger of allah, the very same people tried to then kill him, these are the quryash.

it was almost as if there was no religiuon in the imediate time before the propeht muhammad sallalahu alayhi wa salaam.

So yeah, it was something new in that time, and his sallaahu alayhi wa salaam, shariah was new.

No, Prophet SaLlaLlahu ALAihiwassaLLam did not revert to Islam but was a Muslim since birth and we also know that every one is born on Islam, new Muslims are only those who return to fold of Islam after kufr or shirk.Thats Y they are called as reverts.
