In college a while back, me and a few other muslim students and a teacher were just talking about new muslims and if it was right or not if we refer to someone as a 'new muslim' even though they converted 20 years before. Then a muslim teacher said that the Prophet (SAW) was a new muslim because there was no Islam before him. I was wondering, is this correct or not because they were prophets before him who propagated Islam and so forth although Allah revealed the Qur'an to the Prophet (SAW). Can one say he was a new muslim?
