i dont celebrate birthdays

I dont have any hadeeths with me regarding ''birthdays'' , but , the prophet did say there are the two celebrations which should be celebrated, which was eid ul fitr and eid ul adha , and furthermore the prophet didn't celebrate birthdays , but rather an aqeeqa should be done on the birth of child , instead of bringing in bidahs (birthdays) ... as soon as a bidah is adopted , one sunnah is forgotten ... and we should try to stick to the sunnah as much as possible so as to keep away from innovations!

The evidence in the Qur’aan and Sunnah indicates that celebrating birthdays is a kind of bid’ah or innovation in religion, which has no basis in the pure sharee’ah. It is not permitted to accept invitations to birthday celebrations, because this involves supporting and encouraging bid’ah. Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not allowed…?” [al-Shoora 42:21]

“Then We have put you (O Muhammad) on a plain way of (Our) commandment. So follow that, and follow not the desires of those who know not. Verily, they can avail you nothing against Allaah (if He wants to puish you). Verily, the zaalimoon (wrongdoers) are awliyaa’ (protectors, helpers, etc.) to one another, but Allaah is the Wali (Protector, Helper) of the muttaqoon (pious).” [al-Jaathiyah 45:18-19]

“Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord, and follow not any awliyaa’ (protectors, helpers, etc.) besides Him. Little do you remember!” [al-A’raaf 7:3]

According to saheeh reports, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does something that is a not part of this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) will have it rejected” (reported by Muslim in his Saheeh); and “The best of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The most evil of things are those which have been newly invented (in religion), and every innovation is a going astray.” There are many other ahaadeeth that convey the same meaning.

Besides being bid’ah and having no basis in sharee’ah, these birthday celebrations also involve imitation of the Jews and Christians in their birthday celebrations. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, warning us against following their ways and traditions: “You would follow the ways of those who came before you step by step, to such an extent that if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would enter it too.” They said, “O Messenger of Allaah, (do you mean) the Jews and Christians?” He said, “Who else?” (Reported by al-Bukhaari and Muslim). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

sometimes, though I don't celebrate with parties or the sort. Are birthdays something added to the religion?? they don't have anything to do with religion so why would it be bida'?

yes i do celebrate birthdays, i think it is important for those of us living in the west to ensure that our children are not disadvantaged but rather "our better way" should be emphasised without offence to others, in a humble way... but it is not the birthday celebration that may cause concern but the way in which it is celebrated. an event where islamic limits are not transgressed and rememberence of the blessings of allah is prominent, such an event would no doubt be positive... furthermore, respect and tactfulness to other peoples traditions for those who oppose birthday celebrations is another way of assuring mutual respect or tact for islamic traditions from others...

I dont celebreate birthdays, and its haram to do so and the Sunnah is clear about that. As for those who celebrate it and doing something degrading specially if they live in the West, its extremely important NOT TO CELEBREATE BIRTHDAYS BECAUSE ISLAM IS MUCH BETTER THEN THE WAY OF THE KUFFAR, and we should make sure that we teach Islam to our children according to the understand of the salaf.

Asalamu alaikum

Wow! I'm truly amazed at the responses.

anyway.........I'm not aware of the prophet Salla Allahu alayhi wassalam celebrating his birthday, nor any of the campanions after him. That's a pretty good reason for me not to celebrate my birthday as they are my ultimate role models.

As for people............they come to realize you don't celebrate it,they get used to it. one less present for them to buy.

never celebrate it, although it's really hard when every other muslim in your college does and every week theres a bloody 'birthday collection'. when i first started id give a pound or so, but its like someones birthday is every week! so then i just decided to make my intentions clear and then for a while everyone called me a looser that im sad or just gave me 'you're just being tight' looks..i don't really care, alhamdulillah my best friends they understand me and my firm inetntions on islam and how im just trying to be a good muslim so with them i just buy eid gifts and i go on holiday every year so i buy them gifts then and because they are my closest friends i dont need some kind of 'reason' like a birthday to celebrate, i give them gifts for being my friends and out of love and they do the same with me..mashallah the're so awesome- i love them for being the few youths who understand me

Of course.
Muslimah - why do you fear when your faith says you will experience paradise? Is it that you don't quite believe it perhaps?

muslims are not guaranteed heaven, we believe all people will stand before Allah and be judged for every action and intention

we worry that we may end up in hell and hope that we will end up in heaven
