Possibly a configuration error with Xserver . What chipset are you using for video ect.. Get me the info on your pc ie .. video chipset ( just tell me video card if need be ) also include what your monitor supports for resolution ( I can most times get this by brand and size of monitor ) . Also semi pertinent is processor speed , amount of video ram and amount of system ram . Give me this and I can tell you what Xserver you need to use and what settings to set .

Stay online answer coming shortly need to research your monitor resolution .

Justicator
20-09-02, 08:29 PM
Yep Linux is kinda flaky so as far as your vidoe is concerned you can try different resolutions just go to the command line and use the ( Xconfigurator ) command and let it automatically pick your monitor and chipset . When it gets to the Select Video modes screen youll have to expiriment with different resolutions . I suggest 8 bit 600x800 to start if that works fine try next setting up till you reach a happy medium and the Xserver stays stable . SiS chipset is supported by the newer versions of Linux but it's not by any means perfect compatability . I have personally used SiS when it wasnt supported and was able to find a resolution that worked . So experiment a while with that and see what resolution best suits you or gets rid of the discoloration . Ok now you have a basis to start with the video config now I need to know a little about how you are connected to internet . I know your are using cable modem but do you have more than one machine connected to it and if so what is providing DHCP service your cable company ? or you ? I have can have ya up and running in 10 minutes if you can answer quikly .

Run ( Xconfigurator ) from the linux command line . You can just open up a session within the Linux GUI or you can do Ctrl + Alt + F1 this will kill the Xserver session and take you to the command line in Linux . just type in Xconfigurator at the command prompt and do the steps from my previous post . Then do Ctrl + Alt+F7 to take you back to the GUI and Ctrl + Alt + backspace to restart Xserver with the new settings .

Woot !! Great one prob down . Now lets get the other box connected to net as well . Do you have a HUB ?

cyber-muslim
20-09-02, 09:53 PM
no hub

cyber-muslim
20-09-02, 09:54 PM
do u have an msn? maybe u can talk me through it

Justicator
20-09-02, 10:11 PM
Hmm . Easiest way to overcome this without being fancy without a hub is to set the Network settings in Linux to obtain IP automitically and it will grab a IP for your box . Downside to this without hub you can't have both machines connected to the cable modem . My suggestion to you is to get a cheap analog router ie Linksys ( be sure it has the DHCP server option ) they aren't very expensive but the bonus is you can have as many boxes connected to the net as you want with only 1 IP . For now since you have no hub you can at least connect the Linux box to the net and get all the latest patches ect..

cyber-muslim
20-09-02, 10:28 PM
linux-box.org? is that the site?

also where can i get hold of the hub from, do u think some where like pc world would have it?

Justicator
20-09-02, 10:35 PM
For the patches just use the updater program in 7.3 it will make you complete a profile form for Red Hat site but its free . Yep any PC place will have a hub . Best Buy Comp Usa ect... Netgear makes a cheap hub thats pretty sturdy . Just get a 10/100 hub to ensure compatability with your nic's other than that go as cheap as you can get .

is this hub any good?:

Sorry was busy eating yes that is perfect and will require less work around junk making it very easy for you . It has a built in DHCP server so it assigns IP adrresses for your machines . It also provides NAT so you will be more secure when on the net see my post in the ( firewall ) section . This is the perfect analog router / hub combo for cable users .

cyber-muslim
21-09-02, 06:35 PM
i got the hub and i am now awaiting further instructions, it has DHCP option and also a built in firewall.

Justicator
21-09-02, 08:26 PM
Great simply follow the instructions in the manual ( connect the hub between the cable modem and the 1 machine to start with ) . Next simply open a web browser and type in the IP of the hub . Here you will come to a login screen I believe that leave user name blank and ( admin ) is the password ( later you will want to set this ) . When you do this you will be taken to the admin screens for the hub simply enable the DHCP option . The hub will automatically grab an IP from your cable company ie .. this will be your external IP . Once the DHCP service is turned on and you have your cables connected just simply turn your machines on they will automatically be assigned an internal IP by the hub . Only thing you need to do is under the network properties of the machines is make sure you check OBTAIN IP AUTOMATICALLY . Thats it you will be up and running . On a side note be sure to cycle the power on the hub after you set the DHCP service to on this will ensure that it gets an IP from your cable company :)

Just open a web browser and put in the IP ( 192.168.1.1 ) this will bring up the admin screen . NO username and (admin ) for password . Click on DHCP tab and enable DHCP service . Make sure the cable from the cable modem is plugged into the WAN slot on the hub and that your machine is plugged into one of the numbered slot 1 2 3 or 4 . Reboot hub ( unplug the power then plug back in ) reboot your machine . Basically just remember

Cable modem - connect to WAN port on hub

Machine - connect to one of the numbered ports

This must be done prior to putting in an IP adress .

Justicator
21-09-02, 10:36 PM
username - leave blank
password - admin

After you get past that youll come to the admin screen .

Click DHCP tab - ENABLE DHCP

reboot hub and machine and you should be set .

cyber-muslim
21-09-02, 10:45 PM
the DHCP screen reads as follow:

DHCP Server: Enable (*) Disable ()

Starting IP Address: 192.168.1.100

Number of DHCP Users: 1

DHCP Clients Table

Apply / Cancel/ Help

is that right?

Justicator
21-09-02, 10:47 PM
Yes . Check all cable connections to hub and cable modem and reboot both for safe measure . After this you will simply only need to plug a machine into a port reboot it and your connected . Forgot to add bump up that number of users to however many machines you are going to connect . Be sure to hit apply as well .

This is where the problem is you have no WAN IP . Few questions did the cable company assign you an IP ? What was the normal setup when you got cable access did you simply plug your computer into the cable modem and automatically get an IP via the cable company or did you have to manually set it . All cable companies are not the same so youll have to let me know . Give me the website of your cable company I'll see what type of setup they have for you . Also make sure that the cable running to the hub from the cable modem is plugged into the port labeled WAN .

Justicator
23-09-02, 05:34 PM
There is a series of lights on the front of your hub that are circled and say WAN beneath them . They will tell you if you are making correct contact . I don't know of any cable company that is able to restrict the Linksys device in the U.S. and have not heard anyone having the issues you are . I would definatly make sure that the cable you are using to connect the cable modem to the Linksys device are making proper contact . From what I read about thier modems is that they have an ethernet connection and a usb connection port . You can't have a computer plugged into the USB connection and the hub plugged into the ethernet connection at the same time the hub must be the only device plugged into the modem .

Either really don't let the 8.2 fool you it's the same kernel as Red Hat 7.3 . Mandrake used to take Red Hat do some tweaking then repackage under thier name . But Mandrake is typically cheaper and at times they bundle free software . Of course Red Hat Updater is rather nice nothing like hands free compilation of kernel and software .

Np I have figured out how your cable company's network is setup to some degree . This will without fail get you to your answer . I would like to try this in 2 seperate ways so bear with me . What I want you to do first is to unplug your cable modem from the wall and unplug the power as well . Being sure you have the rest set up as I have suggested in previous posts power down your Linksys device only no need to unplug it from the modem . Next power up your and plug the cable modem back into the wall . Next power up the the Linksys device only no computers . After you have done those 2 things test the connection . If this doesn't work I of course have another solution GUARANTEED to work but for reasons I don't like it . On a side note when you unplug the cable modem let it sit for awhile unplugged 10-20 minutes . So you are going to be disconnecting as well as powering it down . Let's see these results and I will prepare detailed instructions for the next fix if this doesn't work . I will be glad to explain why this must be done at a later time my main concern as well as yours is actually getting a solution for you . :)

Just unplug it before going to work and then plug it back in when you get home that should do the trick .
