Assalaamu aalaikum
Upon looking at this forum, I saw that some people were talking just for the sake of talking, and sometimes it led to arguing or cussing each other. So I was thinking about the reason. I don’t reckon this kind of thing happens on Christian or Jewish forums so why should it happen on our forums? So then I thought that maybe from the factors that lead to that is the lack of knowledge-based discussion on Islaam. I feel that if we all focused our time and efforts having constructive discussion on Islaam, then maybe we could join between benefiting ourselves and others. We could also save ourselves from falling into sin by backbiting so and so, or cussing so and so. So I decided to try and bring some of what I have learnt from my University, and try to benefit others with it. However, I am not gonna just translate things as many people have not got the time to read pages and pages of information that goes in one ear and out the other, so I decided to bring the information in conversation form. What I will do is mention the topic, maybe mention something brief about it, and then ask you all for your ideas on the issue. After a few replies have been posted, and a few ideas thrown into the air, I could then either give what the scholars of Islaam have said on the issue, or maybe ask more questions, so as to examine the idea put forward. In doing so, it would (as I hope) give the reader in insight into how the scholar dealt with issues and went into detail on issues, and also make the information stick (ie in your heads).
Anyway, enough about what I want to do and lets just do it.
At the moment, I will try to keep two topic running at one time so as not to make anyone board of only one topic being discussed.
The first topic is called Usool al fiqh.
Usool al Fiqh is one of the most beautiful subjects I have ever come across in my life, and insha Allaah, I will try to benefit you with some of what I have studied.
Usool al Fiqh is a name made up of two parts (as is obvious). The first being the word "usool" and the second being the word "fiqh". Usool (or asl which is the singular form of this word) in the Arabic language means "foundation" or "base" of something, ie other things are built on top of it. So we have the "asl" of a tree which is the base of it, or we have the "asl" of a building which is its foundation. The opposite of this is the word far' (the plural is furoo') which is what is built upon an asl. The base of a tree is call its asl whilst its furoo' refers to its branches.
The second word I well known to you all.
So when we put these two words together we get "the foundation of fiqh" which is the meaning in the Arabic language. This is important. Just like every science, there has to be ground rules that a person uses, and the ground rules in extrapolating Islamic rulings from the text are found in the science called "Usool al Fiqh". So if a person has no usool, then he should not talk about fiqh as it will lead him to talk about Islaam without knowledge and without being firm on the ground with correct principles.
Anyway, that is the meaning in the language. As for its meaning in the science itself, then it is:
1) Knowledge of the different ways of understanding and extracting rulings,
2) Knowledge of how to us these ways and methods,
3) And who is the one who uses it.
So as we can see, the science is split into three sections, and all of this we study in my Uni for four years. So as you can imagine, it is not something easy, but with paitents, you all will benefit insha Allaah.
Before anyone can start studying this science, there are certain introductions you need to have. One I have just given you which is the meaning of this science in general. Now I want to start the discussion with what is known as "Ahkaam at Takleefiyya".
Ahkaam is the plural of hukm which is "rule".
"Takleef" can be roughly translated as "responsibility". Anyway, these rulings are called that because it applies to us all. i.e. we have been given responsibilities by Allaah to do such and such, however they all differ. Allaah may order us to do something, or leave it. If this order has attached to it punishment, then this is called "waajib", but if it does not then we call it "mustahabb" or "sunnah" or "naafilah" (they mean the same in the Hanbali and Shaafi'ee mathhab). If Allaah forbids us from something, it is either connected with punishment or not. The first is "haraam" and the second is "makrooh".
So we now have 4 different types of rulings,
1) waajib,
2) mustahabb or sunnah,
3) makrooh,
4) and haraam.
There is a fifth ruling which comes in the middle between these four which is "mubaah". Each hukm we will discuss on its own, however I want to start the conversation with the first, Waajib.
I want everyone to write what they know about waajib, ie what it is, and I want each person who writes to mention the different types of waajib. It does not matter if a person gets it wrong. If everyone always got it write then there would be no need for someone to teach it. I just want ideas at the moment. Write whatever comes to mind (without being stupid, lol).
That is it from me for now.
What is needed from you now is:
1) what is a waajib,
2) mention the different types of waajib.
The second topic I mentioned that I wanted to thrown in the air is something related to fiqh itself. This is easy as everyone knows fiqh. So I will just ask everyone to also write what they know about "water". What are the different types of water? For each type give an example. This is important because we all need to make wudhoo, so the ulamaa have discussed in detail this issue of water so that our wudhoo can be accepted.
Anway, until next time.
