Do all prophets have isma? I had always thought so, but I recently heard that some prophets did make small mistakes, some examples given were Daoud (as) and Yunus (as). What's the ruling on this subject?

(note: the title is supposed to "Prophets" not "Prophet's")

Some prophet's did make mistakes. The name of the prophet escapes me at the moment, but he was trapped inside a large fish [aquatic animal???] for a period of time where he made repentance, I believe for disobedience to Allah, and then Allah finally released him.

The prophet to whom you're referring is Yunus (as) (Jonah in the Old Testament)

Assalamu 'Alaykum

I heard a shaykh say once that the creed (Aqeedah of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama') of all muslims should be that the Prophets were Innocent (Ma'soom). And if they had made any mistakes, they are not regarded as sins.

Some movements differ to this and say that the Prophets did sin and so did the Sahabi's. We should be very careful who we take knowledge from insha-Allah.

salam alykum,
yes they commit minor mistakes. even Prophet Muhammed saw commited minor mistakes like in surah 80 described. PERFECTNESS ONLY BELONGS TO ALLAAH and the mistakes that the prophets commit are actually a blessing to the ummah, to learn from the mistakes. for further answer, ask a sheikh in islamqa.com

A sin is that upon which there is error on halal or haram or obligation or prohibition. The Anbiya (as) never made error on any of the above, however they made error on the mubah, unlike a normal person who is not accounted for the mubah actions ie permissible actions that he does, the anbiyah were accountable to allah (swt) for every action.

For example in the case where the prophet (Saw) was threatened by allah (swt) because he released the prisoners of war after badr, Allah (swt) specifically states that if it had not been for a previous ayah permitting what he had done he would have been punished severely, subhanallah so even though the prophet (saw) did something permissible allah (swt) accounted him because of all the actions that were permissible he chose one which allah (swt) deemed as less correct...

In the case of Yunus (as), he left his community to find someone else to give dawah to, and he was punished not because this was a sin but because he had not asked allah (swt) first... the same goes for all the anbiya, they were masoom in regards to sin.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "adam and moses argued with each other. moses said to adam. 'O adam! You are our father who disappointed us and turned us out of Paradise.' Then adam said to him, 'O moses! Allah favored you with His talk (talked to you directly) and He wrote (the Torah) for you with His Own Hand. Do you blame me for action which Allah had written in my fate forty years before my creation?' So adam confuted moses, adam confuted moses," the Prophet added, repeating the Statement three times.
(Sahih Bukhari - Book #77 (http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=77&translator=1&start=0&number=611), Hadith #611 (http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=77&translator=1&start=0&number=611#611))

Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection the Believers will assemble and say, 'Let us ask somebody to intercede for us with our Lord.' So they will go to adam and say, 'You are the father of all the people, and Allah created you with His Own Hands, and ordered the angels to prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with your Lord, so that He may relieve us from this place of ours.' adam will say, 'I am not fit for this (i.e. intercession for you).' Then adam will remember his sin and feel ashamed thereof. He will say, 'Go to Noah, for he was the first Apostle, Allah sent to the inhabitants of the earth.' They will go to him and Noah will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking.' He will remember his appeal to his Lord to do what he had no knowledge of, then he will feel ashamed thereof and will say, 'Go to the Khalil--r-Rahman (i.e. Abraham).' They will go to him and he will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking. Go to moses, the slave to whom Allah spoke (directly) and gave him the Torah .' So they will go to him and he will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking.' and he will mention (his) killing a person who was not a killer, and so he will feel ashamed thereof before his Lord, and he will say, 'Go to Jesus, Allah's Slave, His Apostle and Allah's Word and a Spirit coming from Him. Jesus will say, 'I am not fit for this undertaking, go to Muhammad the Slave of Allah whose past and future sins were forgiven by Allah.' So they will come to me and I will proceed till I will ask my Lord's Permission and I will be given permission. When I see my Lord, I will fall down in Prostration and He will let me remain in that state as long as He wishes and then I will be addressed.' (Muhammad!) Raise your head. Ask, and your request will be granted; say, and your saying will be listened to; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.' I will raise my head and praise Allah with a saying (i.e. invocation) He will teach me, and then I will intercede. He will fix a limit for me (to intercede for) whom I will admit into Paradise. Then I will come back again to Allah, and when I see my Lord, the same thing will happen to me. And then I will intercede and Allah will fix a limit for me to intercede whom I will let into Paradise, then I will come back for the third time; and then I will come back for the fourth time, and will say, 'None remains in Hell but those whom the Quran has imprisoned (in Hell) and who have been destined to an eternal stay in Hell.' " (The compiler) Abu 'Abdullah said: 'But those whom the Qur'an has imprisoned in Hell,' refers to the Statement of Allah: "They will dwell therein forever." (16.29) (Sahih Bukhari- Book #60 (http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=60&translator=1&start=0&number=3), Hadith #3 (http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=60&translator=1&start=0&number=3#3))

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "adam and moses argued with each other. moses said to adam. 'You are adam whose mistake expelled you from Paradise.' adam said to him, 'You are moses whom Allah selected as His Messenger and as the one to whom He spoke directly; yet you blame me for a thing which had already been written in my fate before my creation?"' Allah's Apostle said twice, "So, adam overpowered moses." (Sahih Bukhari - Book #55 (http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=55&translator=1&start=0&number=621), Hadith #621 (http://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=55&translator=1&start=0&number=621#621))
