Assalamu alaikum
,
We have Norton Firewall on the PC at home. I thought it was a bit silly until recently.

First off, the Firewall keep telling me that someone is trying to 'hack' into the computer. Then later on, the internet became very sliggish when opening websites so I decided to shut down and call it a night.

But..........the computer asked me as it logged off....... "What about the 14 files that are opened, are you sure you want to log off the net?"

Does this sound like I've had an unwelcome intruder?

If so, what can I do about it?

Can I interogate my PC while on the net to see if anyone's slipped inside??

And again today, the firewall reports that someone's frantically trying to hack again.

If only I had something worthwhile for them to see. Oh well, hoping someone can help, it's like having a burglar in the house and very disturbing.

Asalaam Alaikum,

Try pressing ctrl-alt-del similtaneously and check what programs are running - do this before and after you connect to the web and write down the extra programs that start.

The other suggestion is to scan you system with a virus checker and if you have jvm enabled by default in your browser its possibe that you have picked up some of the many ad-ware trojans that are circulating at present. You can download software to remove these as well.

Let me know what happens.

Your software firewall was basically just being set off by someone running a script against all IP's in your network range these are mostly harmless port scans to see what active ports you have on your machine . The settings on your software firewall can indeed slow the performance of your machine as it the program keeps active tabs on requested IP traffic by the user and unsolicited IP traffic coming off the web . You probably have by default certian logs that record this traffic active as well which is another strain on your system resources . Two fixes you can try is to lower the threshold of IP traffic scanned from PARANOID to LET MOST THROUGH this still allows the software firewall to log someone actually trying to access an active port instead of picking up all the Script Kiddie spam . The second fix is to deactivate the logging of all IP traffic incoming to your machine ( remember these logs are writing to a text file as IP traffic is being scanned ) . You don't need to disable all logging just ensure you are not logging ALL IP traffic . You should be able to find these settings within the firewall software itself .
