City Circle Presents:
ENEMY COMBATANT – AN AUDIENCE WITH MOAZZAM BEGG
Date: Friday 21st April 2006
Time: 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
Venue: Old Theatre, Main Building, London School of Economics,
Houghton Street, London, WC2A 2AE
Our speaker, according to George W. Bush, is a "bad" person. According to Donald Rumsfeld, our speaker is amongst the "the worst of the worst", the "hardest of the hardcore", "very tough, well trained terrorists", "among the most dangerous, vicious killers on the face of the earth" and "likely to return to kill Americans in terrorist attacks if released". Well, he has been released. Judge for yourself as we invite 'enemy combatant' Moazzam Begg to the City Circle to discuss how he ended up at Guantanamo Bay as one of 9 Britons held without trial or charge with the indignity of being designated as a legal non-person.
He spent 3 years held without charge by the US government (in Bagram, Kandahar and Guantanamo Bay) and released in January 2005 without explanation or apology.
Why was he held?
How was he tortured?
What kept him going during those long dark months?
What impact has his time served had on his outlook?
Why is it that non-Muslims have done far more to secure his release than Muslim hot air and rhetoric?
What is it about angry young Muslims that have made them impotent in changing their conditions?
Moazzam will be answering your questions and signing copies of his new book 'Enemy Combatant: A British Muslim's Journey to Guantanamo and Back' which will be on sale at a 25% discount price for £15. All welcome and entrance is free.
