Quest

am referring to those gypsie looking beggars whom ARE NOT MUSLIMS, but appear to look like muslim women because of the tiny scarfs they throw around their necks.

i was walking and bumped into one, because she sees am a muslim she says

"help help i to muslim give money me"

i said are you muslim? she said yes, i said i dont believe you why put on your scarf when u saw me getting closer?

she didnt respond i used reverse psychology and she confessed she was not muslim, i asked why she is begging in the street yet she got gold teeth and gold necklace?

for some reason i was really ****ed off, she began to beg more, i said lady the money is no issue, just dont beg passing yourself as a muslim.

she told me to **** of and began to beg other people, i got annoyed and said beg one more time i swear to god i will rip that scarf of ur head, she had a smirk on her face and told me to bug off in a foreign language,

I am a muslim yes but i have zero tolerance when it comes to things like that, i seriously wanted to take her scarf but felt bad so just shouted at her for a bit then left

(see the area was full of muslims so she thought passing of as a muslim will get her the sympathy vote)

these people beg on the trains using their kids, shes begging and is wearing more gold then me!

what can we do with these folks?

Damn them non-Muslim beggars sure travel all over the place don't they? They've made home outside our local Masjid too.

Are they into the business of branching out and sending sales reps everywhere?

I wonder if there was an/similar instance during the prophet's (pbuh) time, I'll be curious to know how he would have handled fake beggars?...

I can only think of an instance where he reprimanded a sahaba for having killed a man who uttered the shahada, I don't remember the sahaba's/companion name.. I am sure those of you who are better in the ahadith would know who he is... this sahaba said that he killed the man because he uttered the shahada out of fear, in which the prophet replied "Hal shaqaqta kalbahu/sadrahu?.." (again you all can correct me here if I am wrong I am paraphrasing what I remember..) which in english means did you open his heart/chest.. in another word did you see the content of his heart? to know his intentions...??

My point in all is "the intention".. that I too have seen those people wearing muslim attires(asia/balkans/gypsie style to some) begging on the streets of Toronto, mostly women along with their kids, and even got reprimanded by a non-muslim friend for having given them money, her believing that they are scam artists who prey on people's genorisity/ humanity to feed their chronic laziness, not to mention their many vices...And my position was the woman and the kids seemed vulnerable that a couple of bucks won't hurt my budget and since I didn't witness their trickeries that I just couldn't let myself place a judgement lest I be wrong.

Mind you I am not naive, in my neighborhood even the crackheads on the streets avoid me nevermind ask for a change, it's just that I have a soft spot for women beggars and their lil jokers:D ..

So I ask you all how does one islamically do the right thing without depriving someone in need of few dollars and not mistake them for scammers?, specially taking into account the hadith between the prophet(pbuh) & that sahaba (?)(rah) about intention's ...would appreciate if anyone could post the correct version of that hadeeth also.

I believe most of us strive for good intentions..

Peace V

almuwak u make a good point i to would love to know the answer

seriously they are notourious outside regents park i know what malikone is on about.

but come on big dangly earings and rings yet shes begging?

one time in egdeware road i felt bad, i was outside the mc donalds and all i saw was kid walk up to me sticking his hand out, i bended down to say hey, and his all stroking my hair asking stuff i realised he wanted money, instead i took him in there and got him some food, went to use the bathroom now, when i came out i saw all these kids, turns out their mamas were sending them to me, though i couldnt afford to feed them all i thought what should i do?

next thing i see these cute kids are expert pick pockets, i caught one going down my pocket, i was upset and vexed.

am sorry but to my knowledge muslims do not beg in public like that if they need stuff they go the various muslim charitys.

My last encounter with a beggar went like this {paraphrased}.

Him: "Could I get a couple dollars."

Me: "What for?"

Him[stunned look + a pause]: "For food."

Me: "Fine. Pick a restaraunt and I'll buy you a meal."

Him: "I have to buy for my family as well."

Me: "Go Get them, and I'll buy you all a meal at a restaraunt."

Him: "It would be easier if you just gave me some money."

Me: "I'm not an easy kind of guy."

Him: "Nevermind."

Then he goes wandering off to annoy someone else. Drug users want money, not food.;)

Assalamualaikum

Wimslow Rd is full of them. Some of them can curse so bad it makes your ears burn :D

Once one of those women stopped me and i gave her some money and then she said more and i was like "sorry i don't have anymore" and then she looks me up and down and says "hmmm give me your shoes" SubhanAllah. Maybe they are scammers but as long as i don't know for sure i'm not going to judge them lol. I know some can be really annoying but inhsAllah we can still be civil and at least smile because we never know when we may be in a position of very little means.

I can't say no to kids either. Even if they're begging in full designer gear:embar: Once this woman points at me and her kid comes over with a realy sad face on and points to his mouth and belly  so i gave him some money and the first thing he does is walks into the take away and buys a can of coke. I was like :o dude NO WAY! Now i just offer to buy them food. Most curse me and walk away but some are genuinely hungry so it's cool :p

This is funny. Once in my first year at uni we'd run out of milk so i went out to buy some cuz i hate missing breakfast lol. It was about 5am so i thought no one's going to be on wimy rd at this time so i just tied on one of those tiny hijabs and threw on a huge sweater on top of my pyjamas but there were people :(and one guy comes upto me and gives me a fiver and says "oh my god you poor bosnian woman. Have you been up begging all night!" I was so gobsmacked but i put him straight. Lol shoulda seen his face then. He went even redder than me :rofl1:

In regards to the first post by Quest, I have often wondered this myself. I dont think they are muslims either.

Having said this, and spoken to some other muslims about it, many have said that we should consider, as we do with all things in our lives, what would the Prophet (saw) have done??? how would he have responded???? And the fact is, the Prophet (saw) never said 'No' to anyone, when they asked of him. He would show kindness and mercy to muslims and non-muslims alike...because this is the character of muslims..

I dont know the ruling or anything on this issue exactly, but I dont see the harm of giving them a bit of change if it means stopping them from annoying you and bogging at you for 10 minutes. I mean, obviously, its different with the a drunken begger who is probably on drugs...I just ignore those because they usually say rude things....

Allahu alim...

Whenever I go to Vancouver, I like to stay down in the East end, close to skid row. There's a guy that owns a sandwich shop just off East Hastings. It's a little hole in the wall type of place. I usually go in there and buy a couple of dozen sandwiches at a discount price that he gives me. If it's winter time I'll also get coupons from him for coffees. Then when a panhandler approaches me, I'll give them a sandwich and maybe a coffee.
My favourite people down their are the prostitutes though. As I walk by I get the usual flat toned, "Want to party?" I'll say no thanks but then I'll crack a joke like if she's Indian or black I'll ask her, "What's a nice Irish girl like you doing down here?" When they realize that you don't want anything from them they just seem to come to life right in front of you.
These girls have suffered indignities all their lives and to have someone treat them like a simple human being is a treat. I had a guy try to mug me once with a knife and before I had a chance to do anything the poor guy had 3 hookers beating him down :D

I only encounter homeless veterans begging. I give them money. I figure if I have the $ to spare, then it's best to give and be taken advantage of, than to not give when the person actually needs it.
