View Full Version : The Enemy Within – Al Munafiqeen

One of the most destructive roles in the war between Haq and Batil, the battles between Islam and Kufr is that of some people who claim to be Muslims in order to destroy the Muslims and the Muslim Ummah from within; in particular, when these enemies play their role from within the Muslims rather than openly from the side of the real enemy (i.e. the Kuffar).

Whatever the strength or power of the kuffar may be or whatever they may plot, they can never cause as much damage to us as the enemy within.

It is essential to see what Allah and His Messenger Muhammad (saw) orders us to do about this deadly enemy. Ordinarily, the enemy can never pass the shield, pass the fronts of the Muslims, but if they have one of their people behind this shield then it is easy for the enemy to destroy us from the inside.

They will come to us in the name of the Deen, or they will attempt to identify with us in the name of nationalism or tribalism, in the name of these “isms” and in the name of the Muslim brotherhood. These people can cause destruction for us from within the body of the Muslim Ummah. They can hammer at the Islamic culture and identity which we speak about; they can destroy all our dignity, they can destroy every seed of goodness in the Ummah.

Our real enemy is outside us and not inside and verily they (the Kuffar) knew the fact that they can never defeat us directly or militarily, rather they cannot defeat us except from within.

Always in the past, whenever they try to fight us militarily, the Muslims were undefeated, in fact, we find that whenever we were defeated - it was always actually a defeat from within.

When the enemy realised this, they went to all those people within us, those people who are the apostates, the Munafiqeen, those people who are secular etc. They are the hammer that the kuffar use to destroy us from inside. That is why the enemy outside of us no longer wants to face us face to face; instead they start to rely on our enemy within to fight us.

That is why we are in a very dangerous situation unless we deal with that enemy within. We see them, how they sell out their own deen and honour for a very small price. In the past it was the Baatinis, the Alqamis, and the Raafidis etc who were enemies within. Those enemies from the Munafiqeen always tried to cause destruction for the Muslim Ummah, we see how they come out proudly and loudly declaring their betrayal, they become well respected among the kuffar and that is because they become the ambassadors of the Kufr and the shirk and the representatives of the mushrikeen.

THE HYPOCRITES

Munafiqeen, the hypocrites
We have many enemies within; the apostates, the Munafiqeen, the seculars and atheists, we even have the deviant sects (although we do not see many of the deviant sects as enemies as such e.g. Ash’aris, Maaturidis etc unless they become hypocrites). One of the enemies are the hypocrites – the Munafiqeen.

So who are the Munafiqeen? Verily they have many characteristics, they are a form of people who have a very complex personality; they wear a certain mask and live between the Muslims; their main aim is to destroy the Muslim unity and to destroy the ummah from within.

Whatever they claim and whatever they show us, verily they are the eyes of dalaal (misguidance), the eyes of the enemy; they cause fasad (corruption) and destruction for the honour and wealth of the Muslims.

Allah (swt) informs us about the Munafiqeen, how we could sometimes be impressed by their looks, status and their smart dress, that they will speak about Islam but mention all kufr and shirk in their speech. Allah (swt) says,
"When you look to them you are impressed by their appearance, when they speak, you listen to their words, they are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah is on them! How they are deluded.” [EMQ 63:4]

They are the enemy, those who you will be impressed by them, they will speak in a very articulate manner and try to convince you to commit kufr, and they will try to convince you to obey the queen, to vote for man-made law, to participate in democracy.

Allah warned us that they are the enemy and we must be careful of them. Verily, the one who Allah guides, nobody will misguide; if there is no Imaan and no Islam then there is no meaning for the man but inside the Munafiq is a kafir and on the outside he shows us Islam; they declare Imaan and hold in their hearts Kufr, Fusq and Fujur.

The Munafiq is the one who’s outer does not match what is inside of him. They are divided into two,

(i) Nifaq Akbar and
(ii) Nifaq Asghar

The Big Nifaq is the one that takes one out of the fold of Islam and the Nifaq Asghar is the one who is not kafir but has some attributes of the Munafiq.

We see how the enemy cannot attack us face-to-face, so that is why they always try to attack us from within - this Munafiq is the one who wants to show Islam publicly but inside or in his private life he is in fact kafir.

He is not a mu'min at all, rather he is a person who has no honour, no karamah, no respect whatsoever and he is the most dangerous person against the Muslims, Allah described them in many ayat that,

"They are the real enemy"

Allah (swt) did not say that they are the assistants of the enemy, nor that they are 'from among the enemy,' rather He (swt) says that they are THE enemy, they think that they deceive Allah and the believers, but they only deceive themselves, Allah (swt) says,

“They (attempt to) deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves while they do not know.” [EMQ 2:9]

The question arises, how can we deal with them? Especially when they come out with Islam in their exterior, and Ahl Al Sunnah wal Jama'ah judge everyone only by what is apparent. The apparent actions of the Munafiqeen are Islam; that is why they are a very difficult enemy to face.

We know how they are the lowest in the hellfire but how can we recognise them? How can we deal with them? We know that the great destruction of the Muslims in the past was always at the hands of the Munafiqeen, they are the most destructive people in the Islamic state, even in the time of Muhammad (saw) and in the time of Abu Bakr Al Siddiq (ra).

MUHAMMAD (SAW)

We see how much suffering and damage they caused this ummah, we see in the time of Muhammad (saw) that the Munafiqeen were the most active to cause destruction to the Muslims, they even built a Masjid to harm and divide the Muslims; just like today we see all the 'mosques' all become a post to spy on the Muslims, to divide them, to promote the kufr and shirk and to reject the jihad and shari'ah. Even these so-called mosques, will by the kufr law that they uphold, spy on the Muslims and report anyone who they consider 'suspicious' to the kuffar.

ABU BAKR

In the time of Abu Bakr (ra), despite the very short time in power as the Khalifah, his rule was consumed by the Munafiqeen who came out to rebel against the khalifah. All of a sudden, they did not want to pay the zakat and Abu Bakr dealt with them severely and left them no room even to breathe.

In the time of Muhammad (saw), the Munafiqeen used to be worried and hide all the time; that is because Allah used to reveal about and expose them. In Surah Taubah, Allah says,

"The Munafiqeen are worried that there might come a chapter about them, exposing what is really in their hearts. Say, 'Mock (as you like)! Allah will expose everything that you fear”." [EMQ 9:64]

That is why they came out in the time of Abu Bakr; they came out knowing that there will be no revelation anymore, so they became brave in their kufr.

We must learn and study about what Abu Bakr Al Siddiq did in return. When they started to declare their intention (the Munafiqeen came out and spoke out) saying “We do not want to pay the zakat anymore because we used to pay it to the messenger.” Abu Bakr saw their corruption spread everywhere, and he said,

"By Allah, I will fight anyone who differentiates between salah and zakat"

He fought them all over the Arabian Peninsula, he took their lives, wealth and money, and he killed thousands from them and took their property and families as booty until they surrendered and until they declared that the dead from among them all died in jahiliyyah and are in the hellfire.

UMAR IBN KHATTAB

In the time of Al Farouq, the Munafiqeen tried again to destroy the Muslims from within. One man called Abu Lu'lu'a and his people came to Umar and claimed that he wanted to embrace Islam.

Abu lu'lua (really a fire-worshipper) and two other men claimed to embrace Islam with Umar ibn Khattab and then they betrayed him and stabbed him in the back while he was praying Salat ul fajr.

UTHMAN IBN AFFAN & ALI IBN ABI TALIB

The Munafiqeen are the enemy within, they failed against the messenger (saw), they tried against Abu Bakr and failed, they killed Umar ibn Khattab and in the time of Uthman they came again.

They moved everywhere in a new organised way, they managed to maintain a level of organisation that they never managed before. They followed Abdullah ibn Saba' and ibn Sawda', they started to make their fitnah and without any shame or fear they publicly declared that Uthman was doing wrong, they spread the fabrications and lies

The people at that time just like today listened to them; that is because we do not know that they are Munafiq, because they look and sound so impressive, they killed Uthman ibn Affan (ra) and Uthman's blood spread everywhere and even soaked the Mushaf of Uthman.

They, the Munafiqeen managed to reach the Khalifah, the most vital man in the Ummah, the one who we are obliged to protect. They reached him from within the Muslims and that even opened the door of the fitnah that has not stopped even until today.

At that time the fitnah occurred because people asked "Who killed Uthman?" They wanted to punish the killer, they even took the blood soaked shirt of Uthman asking, "Who killed Uthman?" Among them was Mu'awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan, he was a governor at that time. He saw himself as the wali of Uthman because he was his next of kin. Some of the sahabah went with Mu'awiyah looking for the killer of Uthman, he declared Baraa' from the murderer and said that they should wait until they find him. This was the fitnah caused by the Munafiqeen, great Sahabah were not saved from it, even Umar ibn Khattab, even Aisha, even Ali, Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with all of them)

In this fitnah instigated by the Munafiqeen, ALL of the Sahabah were on Haq but Ali was closer to the Haq. Ali said to Hasan,

“Your father wishes that he was dead years ago (before the fitnah)" Hasan said, “You used to forbid me to say such a thing.” He replied, “I didn’t know that it would go that far.”

How severe was the damage caused by this enemy within?

THE LATER KHULAFAH

Even in the later khulafah, the Munafiqeen did not hold back, ibn Kathir narrated about the Munafiqeen,

"Al Musta'sim billah used to have a minister called ibn Al Alqami.”

Ibn Al Alqami was a Munafiq, Raafidi Ithna 'ashari (those Mushrikeen from the Shi’ah who curse the Sahabah), he was severely corrupted but he used to show to the people that he was a man of Salah and piety. He was the one who wrote letters to Hulaqo (a king from the Kuffar), he wrote to him,

"I am willing to help you conquer all of Baghdad on the condition that you remove the Khilafah of the Muslims"

Just like the Allaawi of today, they help the kuffar enter the Muslim countries to fight the Muslims, we see the Raafidhah - taa'ifatu shirki (a sect of Shirk – polytheism), these people of adultery and Muta' (temporary ‘marriage’). 99% of what they say is lies and 1% is Tuqiyyah (another form of lying and hypocrisy, saying with the tongue what they do not believe in the heart).

Subsequently, Hulaqo came to Baghdad with the help of this enemy within; the kuffar entered and killed the khalifah and so many of the Muslims.

Ibn Al Alqami thought that by allowing and helping the kuffar to do so that he can get rid of the Sunnis in Iraq and establish a Shi'i state, a Raafidi state etc. He plotted and planned against the Muslims, he would go to the khalifah and advise him to release 15,000 soldiers from the army; he claimed that it was too costly and not necessary to retain them. He insisted until the khalifah agreed and allowed 15,000 of the army to return home. After a few months, ibn al alqami returned and advised him to release another 20,000 soldiers and again the khalifah was fooled and took what he though was his expert advice.

Worse than that, ibn Al Alqami personally chose the best of the fighters and he took their weapons from them and sent them home, those 20,000 soldiers that he released were equivalent to a million of the tatarian army because they were brave and ready to fight. Ibn Al Alqami kept releasing more and more of the army until there were only 10,000 men left.

Once he had completed his conspiracy, he wrote to Holaqo and informed him how Baghdad now had no more than 10,000 soldiers, he instructed him to come from the north of Baghdad and that he would divide the army to all other fronts in the south and the east.

Just like the Shi’a in Baghdad today, those Munafiqeen in Iraq instructed the US exactly how to enter and how to take Iraq, similarly the Tatarians came with 300,000 soldiers against the 10,000 soldiers of the Muslims. Despite the disadvantage the Muslims fought sincerely and hard and they even managed to capture and kill many of the kuffar; that was until ibn al Alqami taught Holaco how to defeat the Muslims, he told them to cut off the water and use it to flood the area stopping the Mujahideen by the deep mud.

Ibn Al Alqami was the one who betrayed and used all means to destroy the Muslims from within. Holaqo came back and entered Baghdad early in the morning and started to kill the women, the children, the elderly, they raped and mutilated much from the Muslims. It was the biggest massacre of Iraq, similar to the massacres of Fallujah and Basra today. They went to the room of the khalifah and his army wrapped and hit the khalifah in his tent with their shoes until his bones were broken and then they let the horses jump onto him until he was killed.

They did not leave anyone alive, they continued killing and burning everything for 40 days until nothing was left. Ibn Kathir described Baghdad as being full of bodies until the smell made it difficult to breathe and diseases had spread causing many more people to die. Then it was declared that Baghdad was under the control of the Tatarians, it was complete chaos, no-one could recognise their own brother or mother because all the bodies were so badly mutilated and rotten.

But after this Holaco called ibn al alqami, he was shrewd and he knew that the hypocrite was not trustworthy, he said,

"I do not see anything that you deserve for your co-operation with me except to kill you in a very bad way."

That is for the Munafiq, they hung him from his legs and let everyone cut his body into pieces, and ultimately that is the end of all the Munafiqeen.

The same happened in the Uthmani Khilafah and we see them rising again and again, we see how they rose with the northern alliance to fight the mujahideen in Afghanistan.

When we speak about the Munafiqeen or the apostates, we are speaking about the enemy within, unless we deal with them, we are in grave danger. We have a responsibility, we cannot leave them or ignore them; rather we must seek them out and deal with them.

SIGNS OF THE MUNAFIQ

We recognise the Munafiq by certain criteria and it is a duty upon us to declare him Munafiq. His own actions will declare if he is a Munafiq or not and Allah (swt) taught us how to recognise him, how to treat him and how to warn the people from him.

One of their signs is that they do not have the bravery to declare their real stance while the Muslims have some strength or power, but whenever the Muslims are a little weak, they will come out so strongly with their ideas.

1- When the Muslims are weak they speak out their corruption

All those Munafiqeen never used to dare come out publicly in the past, people like Iqbal Sacranie never showed their face before; that is, until 9/11. After that they all came out openly exposing themselves, they are the ones that Allah (swt) says,

"They have a disease in their hearts and Allah has increased their disease, for them is a severe punishment because they disbelieve.” [EMQ 2:10]

They do not speak the Haq; that is why, if you are from the Muslims, then you should come out openly and clearly with the Haq and you should not be silent, otherwise you may look like a Munafiq even if you are not. Allah (swt) says,

“The Hypocrites, men and women, with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close with their hands. They have forgotten Allah; so He hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse.” [EMQ 9:67]

2- If the kuffar have the upper hand, they will come out and they will declare alliance with the kuffar and Baraa’ from the Muslims,

Allah (swt) says,

"Those who ally with the kuffar instead of the believers, do they seek from them dignity? All the dignity is all with Allah (swt)." [EMQ 4:139]

3- When the kuffar have the upper-hand they plot against the Muslims

That is one of the most apparent attributes of the Munafiq, because they have the upper-hand they will always use it to attack and harm the Muslims. Allah (swt) says,

“And there are those who put up a mosque by way of mischief and infidelity - to disunite the Believers - and in preparation for one who warred against Allah and His Messenger aforetime. They will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good; but Allah doth declare that they are certainly liars.” [EMQ 9:107]

4- They seek to take booty from the Muslims

They seek to take your wealth, to take your Masjid, they the Munafiqeen want to take everything and they will do anything to take power over you. They will even claim all of their evil is “for the sake of Islam". Allah (swt) says,

"Those who plot against you, if you are victorious, they will say 'we were with you' and if the kafir have the victory, they will say 'didn't we serve you? And protect you from the believers? Allah will judge between them, and Allah will never allow the kafir to have any upper-hand over the believers." [EMQ 4:141]

5- Whenever the Muslims have any goodness they will be upset and whenever they have any attack on them they are overjoyed.

When the kuffar arrest the Muslims, when they raid our houses then they are so happy; but whenever the Munafiq hears any victory for the Mujahideen, any operation of Jihad, whenever they hear of any kuffar killed in Iraq or Afghanistan then they will be so upset. Allah (swt) says,

“If a good befalls you, it grieves them, but if some evil overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if you remain firm (and patient) and become Al-Muttaqun, not the least harm will their plot do to you. Surely, Allah is aware of all that they do.” [EMQ 3:120]

Whenever they hear that the Mujahideen are arrested they are so happy.

6- They will always claim to you that there is no Jihad.

They wish to terrify the people, to put the Mujahideen down; they will report the Muwahhideen to the Kuffar and call others to do the same, if you ask them to come to jihad, they will not come out, and if there is fighting they will not support you and if they support, then they will run away, Allah (swt) says,

“If they had come out with you, they would not have added to your (strength) but only (made for) disorder, hurrying to and fro in your midst and sowing sedition among you, and there would have been some among you who would have listened to them. But Allah knows well those who do wrong.” [EMQ 9:47]

They do not want any struggle and they will blame you for anything that happens. Allah (swt) says,

“Those who were left behind (in the Tabuk expedition) rejoiced in their inaction behind the back of the Messenger of Allah: they hated to strive and fight, with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah: they said, "Go not forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is fiercer in heat." If only they could understand!” [EMQ 9:81]

7- The Munafiq does not want to arbitrate to the Shari'ah.

They want only to arbitrate to the kufr court and that is a big sign of the Munafiq. They reject the Shari’ah; they reject any hukm according to Islam. If the Shari'ah says to wear Khimar and Jilbaab, forbids freemixing, forbids the Ribaa, forbids the lottery, then they will reject whatever the shari’ah says, Allah (swt) described them.

"Have you seen those who falsely claim to believe in what has been revealed to you and to those before you and yet they want to arbitrate to the taghout while they have been ordered to reject it…?" [EMQ 4:60]

THE CURE FOR THE MUNAFIQ

These are some of the big signs of the Munafiq and there are many other signs; however the question remains what should we do with them? How do we deal with them?

1- We should expose them and stay away from them.

Have Baraa' from them, we should not increase their numbers at all, Allah (swt) says,

"O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitânah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends) those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayat if you have sanity. Here you are! You are the ones who love them but they love you not, and you believe in all the Books [i.e. you believe in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), while they disbelieve in your Book, the Qur’an]. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe". But when they are alone, they bite the tips of their fingers at you in rage. Say: "Perish in your rage. Certainly, Allah knows what is in the breasts (all the secrets)." [EMQ 3: 118-119]

Do not sit with them, do not attend their gatherings, do not support them or have any inclination to them.

2- We should preach to them,

We should tell them that they are Munafiq and expose them, Allah (swt) says,

“They (hypocrites) are those of whom Allah knows what is in their hearts; so turn aside from them and admonish them, and speak to them an effective word to reach their innerselves.” [EMQ 4: 63]

Allah (swt) says,

“Surely, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad SAW) the Book (this Qur’an) in truth that you might judge between men by that which Allah has shown you (i.e. has taught you through Divine Inspiration), so be not a pleader for the treacherous.” [EMQ 4:105]

3- We must remember how to deal with them

We must humiliate them, do not increase their numbers, rather always belittle them, and always speak down about them. The Prophet (saw) said,

"Do not say for the hypocrite Sayyid, if this is the Sayyid, you anger Allah (swt)."

Do not say to them “Brother” or “Akhi”, say to them “Munafiq!” Do not say to them “boss”, rather put him down.

4- Do not ever pray janazah for them if they die.

Even the one who you know that he was Munafiq but was not murtad, do not pray over him and do not go to his grave, Allah (swt) says,

“And never (O Muhammad SAW) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were Fasiqun (rebellious, - disobedient to Allah and His Messenger SAW).” [EMQ 9:84]

5- And if you have the ability fulfil the command of Allah (swt),

“O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Fight against the disbelievers and the Munafiqeen (Hypocrites) and be harsh against them, their abode is Hell, - and worst indeed is that destination.” [EMQ 9: 73]

You should be harsh against them, hate them, declare animosity towards them, stay away from them and declare that they are on the falsehood.

The Munafiqeen are from the worst and most dangerous of our enemies, we must always be on the guard from them, we must always keep this Ummah from being harmed by them – they are the traitors who are waiting to betray us whenever they have a chance, we must uproot their evil first, we must abandon them and their secular beliefs; we must disassociate ourselves from them and their organisations, we must refrain from their gatherings and their funerals.

They are people who will dress smart and seem to be successful, they will show off with their wealth and their articulate speech and they will command all the evil deeds from freemixing, insurance, mortgages, voting for man-made law and political participation and they will disguise all that even with an ‘Islamic’ mask.

They will forbid you from the good deeds, they will forbid the Da’wah and condemn the Da’ee, they will attack the Jihad and label the Mujahideen and they will celebrate and declare joy when the Du’aat and Mujahideen are arrested.

Verily these are familiar scenes to all of us, we remember the treachery of the hypocrites as they collaborated with the Kuffar to raid and violate the house of Allah (swt) in Finsbury park, we remember how they rejoiced when Sheikh Abu Hamza, Sheikh Abu Qatada, Sheikh Faisal and so many others were arrested, we saw how they ordered the Muslims to vote for the Kufr parties in the elections and even threatened those who refused to vote with sin.

These are the enemies within that we must be careful of, we must be on guard from them, and we must boycott them and warn the people from them before they turn on us to a greater extent as in our past. O Allah! Protect us from the Nifaq and the Munafiqeen

I totally agree that this Enemy Within is more greater than the known enemy.

If we look in the wars of the last 3 decades we see the Muslims recieved the most loses when a Munafiq of a group of them were involved with the kuffar.

Unfortunately they are every where and today they have learnt more sophisticated tricks.

But we have some glad tidings for them:

:salams

Do you know the name of those who rebelled against Abu Bakr? Could you provide them?
It was those who opposed his rule, not any issue with zakat.

If the issue had been zakat, why all of a sudden refuse to pay it after the death of Muhammed(saaw)? Zakat is for the poor Muslims, not for Abu Bakr.

You will find Ali(as) himself was one of those who refused to pay allegiance to Abu Bakr, along with his followers who included Salman Farsi, Abu Dharr and Ammar-e-Yassir to name a few. Moreover the daughter of Muhammed(saaw), Fatima(as) died without paying allegiance to Abu Bakr. To declare Ameer ul Mu’mineen a munafiq is hypocrisy in itself.

Those who opposed the rule of Abu Bakr were not Munafiqs, they followed the Hadith stated by Muhammed(saaw):
“I am the City of Knowledge and Ali(as) is it’s gate”.
Qur’an and Hadith testify that leadership must be to the most knowledgeable and courageous in the community. The “Lion of Allah” and the Gate to the prophet’s knowledge, was the most worthy.

And if you disagree with my statements, ask you’re Imam why Ali(as) never participated in any battle that occurred during the reign of the first three caliphs.

There were hypocrites present at the time, who were among the enemies of Islam. However, to place those who insist the khilaphate was reserved for the most wise and courageous in the community in this category is strange, weren’t these people considerate of the protection of the Ummah by declaring their support for a stronger leader?

As for putting others down and humiliating them, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, this is not the correct stance to take as it isn't the example of Muhammed(saaw). The best among Muslims are those who excel in moral conduct. How do you expect to change or convert a person to think the same as you, if you start off by belittling them.

If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s to be careful when calling other Muslims munafiqs, since in many cases, we hate what we don’t know or do not have the knowledge to understand.

You will find many shia don’t support the US occupation of Iraq, just because they understandably wanted Saddam dead, it doesn’t make them munafiq. When the Butcher of Baghdad was busy massacring shia and kurds by the thousands, it was the silence of the sunnis that was deafing. Sunnis are at risk of dying and suddenly the rest of the Muslim world remembers Iraq....that's the way I see it.

It’s because of that type of “lets humiliate them, they aren’t Muslims” mentality that hundreds of thousands of innocent Muslim men, women and children died in Iraq. So instead of blaming everything on others, we have to take one long hard look at ourselves first and stand up for our fellow Muslims, not because they’re sunni or shia, just because it's Muslims that are being oppressed.

sounds like a shiah argument. im not in the mood of debating these arguments . we have discussed issue before.. read the seerah. it was about zakat. as they said they will only pay it to the prophet..

I'm only asking why Ali(as) didn't give alleigance for 6 months & Lady Fatima(as) died without giving bayah to Abu Bakr, is this also because of Zakah?

If you say he paid alleigance, why did he(as) didn't take part in battles while the first three caliphs were in power? Does that make Ali(as) also a hypocrite? God forbid.

Hi all.

I have a huge dificulty understanding Islam! born in a western country with almoust no muslims, Islam seems very strange to me.

Yet i am curious, I try to learn about anything and islam, for some reason, seemed uninteresting until the latests developments with cartoons, bombs, nutheads in london and christians in afganistan. I muslim wanted attention, they got, it!

So i learned, and read about the prophet, and his message. i like particulary of his last speech.

But i still have to compare his message to all the messages from all the prophets or gurus or whatever:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bah%C3%A1%27%C3%AD_Faith

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism

go here for a complete list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Religious_faiths%2C_traditions%2C_and_mov ements

there are loads of non religions beliefs ond philosophies as well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extropianism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singularitarianism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antihumanism

and many others...

I am not endorsing or rejectiong any of the above, that is not my message.

My message is: I, from a certain point of my life, become conscient of all this beliefs, philosophies, faiths, moral standarts or what ever. With an open mind, i read about all of this and reached a compreention of our existence as humans or souls or whatever, that you muslims can never dream about.

I understand a muslim, I could be one! for that i would have to forget 90% of what i learned all my life, believe and submit to allah, love him, find confort in submittion to my creator. Find fellow muslims and build a comunity eager to love our creator and only god, allah.

Being a muslim is not hard! 1.2 billions souls in this world are muslims!

But 90% of my knowledge disables me from seeing the love of allah, only a lobotomy or a in act of total nihilism, could i ever, set me up to be a muslim.

for some reason, (maybe allah is guiding my hand?), i wan't tell you, that there is a world of knowledge out there! millions of words, books, ideas emotions, surprises... togheter, all of these, are more proufound, meaningfull, spiritual, moral that the koran or islam faith alone could ever dream to be!

I am sure every one of you disagrees with me, but consider this:

If you learn, about other things, understand them and why others believe in them, in the end, you will reach the conclusion that allah is true, that your faith is true, and your expanded knowledge will help you defend muslims, allah, the prophet, and all islam.

this is my chalenge to you muslims! millions of words await you!

God forbid.
As a muslim we have no right to question the actions of the Sahaba's because they were and will always be far better than us. Asking too many question can be harmful.

If you’re going to post up lengthy articles on hypocrites among the Ummah, you could at least answer a few questions about it?

Those whose refuse to give alleigance according to hadith also show signs of hypocrisy.
According to you, does this extend to Ali(as) and the daughter of Muhammed(saaw)? If no, then it is not incumbent on others to declare alleigance either.

Ya Allah. Maybe if we realised our past history, we would understand it's effects and the consequent state of the Ummah today.

This thread was not meant for comparative religion. These issues have all been thoroughly discussed in the comparative religion section.

Take it easy......

He used the shia as a comparison in his hypocrisy post and I found that offensive.
I asked him to specify and he couldn’t even give a straight answer.
If you going to come up with offensive statements about specific people, at least try back it up with evidence.

Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever has (the following) four characteristics will be a pure hypocrite: "If he speaks, he tells a lie; if he gives a promise, he breaks it, if he makes a covenant he proves treacherous; and if he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent evil insulting manner (unjust). Noor_Fatimah has asked a question related to the article, either she should be given an answer or told 'you do not know'.

When novices write articles without relying upon guidance from Ulema they make grave errors in their analogies and examples.

Thats why I alwasy ask people to post something you have understood or at least read yourself... and expect people to discuss and ask questions as its a discussion forum and not expect Muslims to accept everything they read on the Internet especially when no references are provided.

3:167. And that He might know the hypocrites; and it was said to them: Come, fight in Allah's way, or defend yourselves. They said: If we knew fighting, we would certainly have followed you. They were on that day much nearer to unbelief than to belief. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and Allah best knows what they conceal.

4: 61. And when it is said to them: Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger, you will see the hypocrites turning away from you with (utter) aversion.

4: 88. What is the matter with you, then, that you have become two parties about the hypocrites, while Allah has made them return (to unbelief) for what they have earned? Do you wish to guide him whom Allah has caused to err? And whomsoever Allah causes to err, you shall by no means find a way for him.

4:138. Bear unto the hypocrites the tidings that for them there is a painful doom

4:140. And indeed He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear Allah's communications disbelieved in and mocked at do not sit with them until they enter into some other discourse; surely then you would be like them; surely Allah will gather together the hypocrites and the unbelievers all in hell.

8: 49. When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said: Their religion has deceived them; and whoever trusts in Allah, then surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.

9: 64. The hypocrites fear lest a chapter should be sent down to them telling them plainly of what is in their hearts. Say: Go on mocking, surely Allah will bring forth what you fear.

59: 12. Certainly if these are driven forth, they will not go forth with them, and if they are fought against, they will not help them, and even if they help-them, they will certainly turn (their) backs, then they shall not be helped.

59: 16. (And the hypocrites are) on the likeness of the devil when he telleth man to disbelieve, then, when he disbelieveth saith: Lo! I am quit of thee. Lo! I fear Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

Ibn Jarir said, "The hypocrites commit mischief on earth by disobeying their Lord on it and continuing in the prohibited acts. They also abandon what Allah made obligatory and doubt His religion, even though He does not accept a deed from anyone except with faith in His religion and certainty of its truth. The hypocrites also lie to the believers by saying contrary to the doubt and hesitation their hearts harbor. They give as much aid as they can, against Allah's loyal friends, and support those who deny Allah, His Books and His Messengers. This is how the hypocrites commit mischief on earth, while thinking that they are doing righteous work on earth.''

The statement by Ibn Jarir is true, taking the disbelievers as friends is one of the categories of mischief on the earth. Allah said,

(And those who disbelieve are allies of one another, if you do not do this (help each other), there will be turmoil and oppression on the earth, and great mischief.) (8:73), In this way Allah severed the loyalty between the believers and the disbelievers. Similarly, Allah said,

(O you who believe! Do not take disbelievers as Awliya' (protectors or helpers or friends) instead of believers. Do you wish to offer Allah a manifest proof against yourselves) (4: 144).

Allah then said,

(Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire; no helper will you find for them) (4:145).

Since the outward appearance of the hypocrite displays belief, he confuses the true believers. Hence, the deceitful behavior of the hypocrites is an act of mischief, because they deceive the believers by claiming what they do not believe in, and because they give support and loyalty to the disbelievers against the believers.

If the hypocrite remains a disbeliever (rather than pretending to be Muslim), the evil that results from him would be less. Even better, if the hypocrite becomes sincere with Allah and makes the statements that he utters conform to his deeds, he will gain success. Allah said,

(And when it is said to them: "Do not make mischief on the earth,'' they say: "We are only peacemakers.'') meaning, "We seek to be friends with both parties, the believers and the disbelievers, and to have peace with both parties.'' Similarly, Muhammad bin Ishaq reported that Ibn `Abbas said,

(And when it is said to them: "Do not make mischief on the earth,'' they say: "We are only peacemakers.'') means, "We seek to make amends between the believers and the People of the Book. '' Allah said,

(Verily, they are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.). This Ayah means that the hypocrites' behavior, and their claim that it is for peace, is itself mischief, although in their ignorance, they do not see it to be mischief.

(13. And when it is said to them: Believe as the people believe,'' They say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed'' Verily, they are the fools, but they do not know.)

Allah said that if the hypocrites are told,

("Believe as the people believe,''), meaning, `Believe just as the believers believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, Resurrection after death, Paradise and Hellfire, etc. And obey Allah and His Messenger by heeding the commandments and avoiding the prohibitions.' Yet the hypocrites answer by saying,

("Shall we believe as the fools have believed'') they meant (may Allah curse the hypocrites) the Companions of the Messenger of Allah . This is the same Tafsir given by Abu Al-`Aliyah and As-Suddi in his Tafsir, with a chain of narration to Ibn `Abbas, Ibn Mas`ud and other Companions. This is also the Tafsir of Ar-Rabi` bin Anas and `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam. The hypocrites said, "Us and them having the same status, following the same path, while they are fools!'' `The fool' is the ignorant, simple-minded person who has little knowledge in areas of benefit and harm. This is why, according to the majority of the scholars, Allah used the term foolish to include children, when He said,

(And do not give your property, which Allah has made a means of support for you, to the foolish) (4:5).

Allah answered the hypocrites in all of these instances. For instance, Allah said here,

(Verily, they are the fools). Allah thus affirmed that the hypocrites are indeed the fools, yet,

(But they know not). Since they are so thoroughly ignorant, the hypocrites are unaware of their degree of deviation and ignorance, and such situation is more dangerous, a severer case of blindness, and further from the truth than one who is aware.

(14. And when they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe,'' but when they are alone with their Shayatin (devils), they say: "Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking.'') (15. Allah mocks at them and leaves them increasing in their deviation to wander blindly

Allah the Exalted states that the hypocrites pretended to be Muslims when they went to the Prophet . In reality, they were not Muslims, but rather the opposite. This is why Allah the Exalted said,

(When the hypocrites come to you, they say: "We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.'') meaning, `when the hypocrites come to you, they announce this statement and pretend to believe in it.' Allah informs that there is no substance to their statement, and this is why He said,

(Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger,) then said,

(And Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars indeed.) meaning, their claims, even though it is true about the Prophet. But they did not believe inwardly in what they declared outwardly, and this is why Allah declared their falsehood about their creed. Allah's statement,

(They have made their oaths a screen. Thus they hinder (others) from the path of Allah.) meaning, the hypocrites shield themselves from Muslims when they falsely and sinfully swear to be what they are not in reality. Some Muslims were deceived because they did not know their falsehood, and thus, thought that they were Muslims. Some Muslims believed what hypocrites say and even imitated them in their outward behavior. However, inwardly, hypocrites seek the destruction of Islam and its people, and this is why trusting them might bring great harm to many people. This is why Allah said next,

(Thus they hinder (others) from the path of Allah. Verily, evil is what they used to do.) Allah said,

(That is because they believed, and then disbelieved; therefore their hearts are sealed, so they understand not.) meaning, He has decreed them to be hypocrites because they reverted from faith to disbelief and exchanged guidance for misguidance. Therefore, Allah stamped and sealed their hearts and because of it, they cannot comprehend the guidance, nor any goodness can reach their hearts. Truly, their hearts neither understand, nor attain guidance. Allah said,

(And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words.) meaning, hypocrites have a graceful outer appearance and are eloquent. When one hears them speak, he will listen to their eloquent words, even though hypocrites are truly weak and feeble, full of fear, fright and cowardice. Allah's statement,

(They think that every cry is against them.) means, every time an incident occurs or something frightening happens, they think that it is headed their way. This is indicative of their cowardice, just as Allah said about them,

(Being miserly towards you then when fear comes, you will see them looking to you, their eyes revolving like (those of) one over whom hovers death; but when the fear departs, they will smite you with sharp tongues, miserly towards good. Such have not believed. Therefore Allah makes their deeds fruitless and that is ever easy for Allah.) (33:19) They are shapes that do not have much substance, and this is why Allah said,

(They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allah curse them! How are they denying the right path) means, how they are being led astray to the misguidance, away from the guidance. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Prophet said,

(Hypocrites have certain signs that they are known by. Their greeting is really a curse, their food is from stealing and the war booty they collect is from theft. They shun the Masjid and they do not come to the prayer but at its end. They are arrogant; it is neither easy for them to blend in, nor it is easy for people to blend with them. They are like pieces of wood by night and are noisy by day.)

(5. And when it is said to them: "Come, so that the Messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness from Allah for you,'' they twist their heads, and you would see them turning away their faces in pride.) (6. It is equal to them whether you ask forgiveness or ask not forgiveness for them, Allah will never forgive them. Verily, Allah guides not the people who are the rebellious.) (7. They are the ones who say: "Spend not on those who are with Allah's Messenger, until they desert him.'' And to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites comprehend not.) (8. They say: "If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honorable will expel therefrom the weaker.'' But Al-`Izzah belongs to Allah, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not.)

In the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah ﴿2﴾, we mentioned Allah's statement,

(They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe). Here, Allah states,

(Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them.) There is no doubt that Allah can never be deceived, for He has perfect knowledge of the secrets and what the hearts conceal. However, the hypocrites, due to their ignorance, scarce knowledge and weak minds, think that since they were successful in deceiving people, using Islamic Law as a cover of safety for themselves, they will acquire the same status with Allah on the Day of Resurrection and deceive Him too. Allah states that on that Day, the hypocrites will swear to Him that they were on the path of righteousness and correctness thinking that such statement will benefit them with Allah. For instance, Allah said,

(On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together; then they will swear to Him as they swear to you) Allah's statement,

(but it is He Who deceives them) means, He lures them further into injustice and misguidance. He also prevents them from reaching the truth in this life and on the Day of Resurrection. Allah said,

(On the Day when the hypocrites ـ men and women ـ will say to the believers: "Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!'' It will be said: "Go back to your rear! Then seek a light!'') until,

(And worst indeed is that destination). A Hadith states;

«مَن سَمَّعَ سَمَّعَ اللهُ بِهِ، وَمَنْ رَاءَى رَاءَى اللهُ بِه»

(Whoever wants to be heard of, Allah will make him heard of, and whoever wants to be seen, Allah will show him.) Allah's statement,

(And when they stand up for Salah, they stand with laziness). This is the characteristic of the hypocrites with the most honored, best and righteous act of worship, the prayer. When they stand for prayer, they stand in laziness because they neither truly intend to perform it nor do they believe in it, have humility in it, or understand it. This is the description of their outward attitude! As for their hearts, Allah said,

(to be seen of men) meaning, they do not have sincerity when worshipping Allah. Rather, they show off to people so that they gain closeness to them. They are often absent from the prayers that they can hide away from, such as the `Isha' prayer and the Dawn prayer that are prayed in darkness. In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah said,

. (The heaviest prayers on the hypocrites are the `Isha' and Dawn prayers. If they know their rewards, they will attend them even if they have to crawl. I was about to order someone to pronounce the Adhan for the prayer, then order someone to lead the prayer for the people, then order some men to collect fire-wood (fuel); then I would burn the houses around men who did not attend the (compulsory congregational) prayer.) In another narration, the Prophet said,

(By Him, in Whose Hand my soul is, if anyone of them had known that he would get a bone covered with good meat or two (small) pieces of meat between two ribs, he would have turned up for the prayer, and had it not been that the houses have women and children in them, I would burn their homes around them.) Allah's statement,

(And they do not remember Allah but little) means, during the prayer they do not feel humbleness or pay attention to what they are reciting. Rather, during their prayer, they are inattentive, jesting and avoid the good that they are meant to receive from prayer. Imam Malik reported that Al-`Ala' bin `Abdur-Rahman said that Anas bin Malik said that the Messenger of Allah said,

(This is the prayer of the hypocrite, this is the prayer of the hypocrite, this is the prayer of the hypocrite. He sits watching the sun until when it goes down between the two horns of the devil, he stands up pecks out four Rak`ahs (for `Asr) without remembering Allah during them except little.) Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i also recorded it. At-Tirmidhi said "Hasan Sahih''. Allah's statement,

((They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these) means that the hypocrites are swaying between faith and disbelief. So they are neither with believers inwardly or outwardly nor with disbelievers inwardly or outwardly. Rather, they are with the believers outwardly and with the disbelievers inwardly. Some of them would suffer fits of doubt, leaning towards these sometimes and towards those sometimes,

(Whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still). Mujahid said;

((They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these) "The Companions of Muhammad ,

(nor to those): the Jews.'' Ibn Jarir recorded that Ibn `Umar said that the Prophet said,

«مَثَلُ الْمُنَافِقِ كَمَثَلِ الشَّاةِ الْعَائِرَةِ بَيْنَ الْغَنَمَيْنِ، تَعِيرُ إِلى هَذِهِ مَرَّةً، وَإِلَى هَذِهِ مَرَّةً، وَلَا تَدْرِي أَيَّتَهُمَا تَتْبَع»

(The example of the hypocrite is the example of the sheep wandering between two herds, sometimes she goes to one of them, and sometimes the other, confused over whom she should follow.) Muslim also recorded it. This is why Allah said afterwards,

(and he whom Allah sends astray, you will not find for him a way.) meaning, whomever He leads astray from the guidance,

(For him you will find no Wali (guiding friend) to lead him (to the right path)) because,

(Whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide him). So the hypocrites whom Allah has led astray from the paths of safety will never find a guide to direct them, nor someone to save them. There is none who can resist Allah's decision, and He is not asked about what He does, while they all will be asked.

(144. O you who believe! Do not take disbelievers as friends instead of believers. Do you wish to offer Allah a manifest Sultan against yourselves) (145. Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.) (146. Except those who repent, do righteous good deeds, depend on Allah, and purify their religion for Allah, then they will be with the believers. And Allah will grant the believers a great reward.) (147. Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing.)

Aslam oaliakum.
Well Quran and Hadeeth give abundent definations of munafiqeen.

And according to these definations the munafiqeen are in large number now a days (Diffirent ppl have diffirent amount of niffaq).Very very sorry to say.......
But this is reality....
This is the only reason of the downfall of this ummah.Nobody want to say himself as munafiq,,,,But what if our deeds are against law of Allah.

Another important concept.
For the good deeds of our ancestors we are not going to heaven untill and unless we follow the right path.
And if they done any mistakes,we are not supposed to follow them,,,We have to follow only Sirat e mustaqeem.

Important>>>Muslim comprises 10 billion of the whole population of world.:ahb: Isn't this a very large population. We have resources,Land every thing of growth and progress,,but We are the most suppressed among the nations of the world.
SO THERE IS A GREAT PROBLEM SOMWHERE IN US....
The Momineen are in minority...Look at todays muslim rulers all over the world.......Look at thier level of faith,,,

We have to get rid of this shamefull situation,,,At this stage Momineen have the same responsiblities as that of suhaba kirams...Muslim ummah has to posess Momin rulers/worriors/leaders we have to support them ...Or otherwise they will face much more trouble....

We should be very realistic,we have to observe our present situation, why Muslims are facing such troubles,,What is the reason??????

We Muslim are all brothers....Pls don't mind ,Oh my brothers pray for me i always pray for you,,,i wana see you happy in this life and hereafter..

Wasalam:ahb: :ahb: :ahb:

what does that mean?

It Is This Ayah Of The Quran,

(Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire; no helper will you find for them) (4:145).

The Attributes of the Munaafiqeen

“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.” (EMQ an-Nisaa’, 4:145)

The hypocrites are the most evil of all people and are eligible for the greatest of punishments in the Hereafter. This is because they appear to be practicing Muslims, yet they are the worst of all enemies as they conceal kufr and shirk. The importance of studying hypocrisy is as vital as studying Tawheed as they are both connected. If we do not study what kufr, shirk and nifaaq are, it is inevitable for us to fall into them, and hence become Kaafir (Allaah forbid). If one does not know the attributes of the Mushrikeen, he will become Mushrik. Likewise, if one does not know the attributes of the hypocrites he may become one.

Only the Mu’min (believer) and the true Muslim (submitter) is afraid of committing nifaaq or kufr, and it is only the Muwahhid (monotheist) who is afraid of committing shirk. The only person who is free from any concerns related to kufr, shirk and hypocrisy is the Kaafir. The primary concern of any Muslim is to keep as far away from kufr, shirk and nifaaq as possible, and then to worship Allaah (SWT) exclusively. It is narrated in Saheeh al-Bukhaari by Ibn Abee Mulaikah, who said:

وقال ابن أبي مليكة: أدركت ثلاثين من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، كلهم يخاف النفاق على نفسه، ما منهم أحد يقول: إنه على إيمان جبريل وميكائيل، ويذكر عن الحسن: ما خافه إلا مؤمن ولا أمنه إلا منافق
‘I met thirty companions of the Prophet (SAW) and each one of them was afraid of becoming a hypocrite, and none of them said that he was as strong as Jibreel or Meekaa-eel.’ And Hasan (al-Basri) said: ‘It is only a believer who fears from hypocrisy, and it is only a hypocrite who feels safe from it (hypocrisy).’ (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Kitaab ul-Eemaan, Chapter 36)

And the Prophet Ibraaheem (AS) said:

وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَذَا الْبَلَدَ آمِنًا وَاجْنُبْنِي وَبَنِيَّ أَنْ نَعْبُدَ الأصْنَامَ
"…O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) one of peace and security, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.” (EMQ Ibraaheem, 14:35)

One must ponder after reading such revelations that if the Companions of the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) used to fear from hypocrisy, for greater reason should we not fear from it? If one of the greatest of Prophets such as Ibraaheem (AS) was fearful from shirk, should we not be? However, it is very sad to see that in today’s reality it is very rare to find people who are afraid of committing sin, let alone becoming Kaafir, Munaafiq or Mushrik. People seem to have this idea that they will go to Jannah automatically and sail through the Day of Accountability.

Therefore, we should not be naďve, and wake up to the very realistic possibilities of becoming Kaafir, Mushrik or Munaafiq by taking the necessary precautions. The best we can do is by fulfilling all of Allaah’s commands and to study Tawheed thoroughly. Then after this, whether we die Muslim or Kaafir is in the hands of Allaah (SWT); may Allaah accept our deeds and make us die in the state of eemaan and tawheed, Aameen. The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) taught us to always ask Allaah (SWT) to die in the state of eemaan and tawheed due to the fact that Allaah is the one who controls our hearts and he can turn it the way he wants, whenever he wants:

‘Oh Allaah forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. Oh Allaah, whosoever of us you keep alive, keep him alive on Islaam, and whosoever of us you cause to die, cause him to die in eemaan. Oh Allaah do not deprive us of our reward and do not subject to trials after his death.’ (Riyaad us-Saaliheen, Book of Visiting the Sick #936)

If there was no possibility of becoming Kaafir, the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) wouldn’t have taught us to ask Allaah to make us live by Islaam and die in eemaan. Let us now, with the will of Allaah (SWT) study some of the attributes of the hypocrites:

The Attributes of the Munaafiqeen

They claim to be believers
“When the hypocrites come to you they say: ‘We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allaah.’ Allaah knows that you are indeed His Messenger and Allaah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars indeed.” (EMQ al-Munaafiqoon, 63:1)

Allaah describes the hypocrites as people who claim that they are believers, yet they are really Kaafir. He calls them liars and disbelievers despite the fact that they explicitly claim by their tongues that they are Muslims and testify ‘Laa ilaaha illaa Allaah’. This is a very frightening point for any Muslim as we all claim to be believers, but yet how do we know that we are not the opposite? In another verse Allaah (SWT) says:

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ يَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ...
“Have you seen those (hypocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which was sent down before you…” (EMQ an-Nisaa, 4:60)

Therefore, we must all be aware that claiming to be Muslims alone does not guarantee us to be from the people of Jannah, and neither does it save us from hypocrisy. Without fulfilling Allaah’s commands, keeping away from taaghout and asking Allaah to keep us in the state of eemaan, we might accidentally (or even purposely for some people) fall into the traps of hypocrisy, shirk and kufr.

However, there are two types of nifaaq, nifaaq akbar and nifaaq asghar. A person with nifaaq akbar (a real hypocrite) is actually a Kaafir pretending to be a Muslim. Therefore, he does not think to himself that he is a believer, rather he is claiming to be so in order to gain sanctity for his life. The nifaaq asghar could be found in a Muslim, who does believe he is a Muslim and also claims to be one. Therefore, there are two levels of hypocrisy, one is a Kaafir pretending to be a Muslim, and the other is an actual Muslim committing acts of hypocrisy.

They do not have talaazum
At-Talaazum means moulding between the inner and the outer, i.e. to say and practice what you believe in. Every Muslim and Kaafir has talaazum; a Muslim believes in Allaah and manifests this in his actions (e.g. salaah) and sayings (e.g. tasbeeh). Likewise, every Kaafir hates Allaah and His Deen and hence we see them verbally declaring war against Islaam and Muslims (sayings), and acting upon this by killing innocent Muslim women, children and elderly (actions).

However, the hypocrites have no talaazum between the inner and the outer which makes them one of the most complicated of all people. This is because they say what they do not believe in and practice Islaam in order to be seen by men. Allaah (SWT) says:

“And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: "We believe in Allaah and the Last Day" while in fact they believe not.” (EMQ al-Baqarah, 2:8)

They seek to deceive Allaah and the believers
