View Full Version : Da'wah in the Time of Crisis

In the time of crisis fear will naturally become widespread among people. This fear must be channelled appropriately and utilised by the daa'ie (propagator of Islam) so that it can benefit the Muslim community instead of being allowed to develop into a source of destruction and ruin.

What follows are some guidelines and advice for du'aat (plural for daa'ie) concerning how da'wah should be given in the time of crisis and calamity.

Guidelines on how to give da'wah in the time of crisis

Direct and guide the fear
This should be done in two ways:

a) By instilling tawakkul in the hearts of the people (at-Tawakkul 'alallah)

The daa'ie ought to teach the people to have tawakkul on Allah, not on weaponry or personnel.

At-Tawakkul (total reliance on Allah) must be implanted in the hearts of the believers. One must (1) believe that Allah (SWT) is al-Wakeel, (2) be Mutawakkil in action (3) and have tawakkul in the outcome:

<LI class=MsoNormal dir=ltr style="TEXT-JUSTIFY: kashida; MARGIN-LEFT: 36pt; DIRECTION: ltr; MARGIN-RIGHT: 0cm; unicode-bidi: embed; TEXT-ALIGN: justify; TEXT-KASHIDA: 0%; mso-list: l3 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list 36.0pt">Allah is al-Wakeel <LI class=MsoNormal dir=ltr style="TEXT-JUSTIFY: kashida; MARGIN-LEFT: 36pt; DIRECTION: ltr; MARGIN-RIGHT: 0cm; unicode-bidi: embed; TEXT-ALIGN: justify; TEXT-KASHIDA: 0%; mso-list: l3 level1 lfo3; tab-stops: list 36.0pt">The one who relies on Allah is called al-Mutawakkil
The subject matter is tawakkul
Allah (SWT) says:

If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah [Alone] let believers put their trust. (EMQ Aali 'Imraan, 3:160)

Whatever calamity befalls us we should always have tawakkul on Allah and anticipate His reward. Verily, after every hardship comes ease, and there is no ease greater than Jannah.

At all times, in prosperity and in hardship, we must be grateful to Allah and thank Him for not afflicting us with something more severe.

One can increase their Eemaan and tawakkul in Allah by often reciting:

حَسْبُنَا اللّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
Hasbunallah wa-ni'mal Wakeel
Allah [Alone] is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs [for us].

Al-Hamdu lillaahi 'alaa kulli haal
All praises are due to Allah – in every circumstance

b) By having good thoughts about Allah (Husnuz-Zan Billaah)

As well as being a daa'ie, the Muslim should also be Mutafaa'il (optimistic).

It is not allowed for a believer to demoralise the Muslim community; instead, he should exhaust as much effort as possible to boost their morale, not dishearten them. Therefore, the daa'ie should not be on the mimbar in the masjid, or any other public platform, saying: "It's all over! There is nothing we can do! They have surrounded us, they have more weapons and they are far stronger than us! We are completely useless! We have no weapons, we are small in number and we are uneducated…" and so on. This type of kalaam (speech) is from none other than Shaytaan. Allah (SWT) says:

It is only Shaytaan [Satan] that suggests to you the fear of his Awliyaa' [supporters and friends, i.e. the Kuffaar], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [true] believers. (EMQ Aali 'Imraan, 3:175)

As a daa'ie, recite unto the believers the verses of Allah which speak about Allah's support and how He will give victory to those who believe and work for His Deen. Allah (SWT) says:

So do not become weak [against your enemy], nor be sad, and you will be superior if you are indeed [true] believers. (EMQ Aali 'Imraan, 3:139)

Those [i.e. believers] unto whom the people [hypocrites] said, "Verily, the people [disbelievers] have gathered against you [a great army]; therefore, fear them." But it [only] increased them in Eemaan, and they said: "Allah [Alone] is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs [for us]."
So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allah. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allah. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty. ([I]EMQ Aali 'Imraan, 3:173–174)

Remind them of battles such as Badr, where the believers were outnumbered and insufficiently equipped (in terms of physical weapons), yet they were able to defeat the enemies of Allah:

كَمْ مِنْ فِئَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةً بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ
…How often has a small group overcome a mighty [and larger] host by Allah's Leave? And Allah is with as-Saabireen [i.e. the Muslims who are steadfast]. (EMQ al-Baqarah, 2:249)

Calm and settle the people
Calm the people by doing the following:

a) Create awareness about the crisis

In the time of crisis people will always be discussing the causes of war and the correct solution.

As a daa'ie, it is vital for you to create public awareness about what is happening to the Muslim Ummah. Make the people understand that:

n There is a conflict between haq (truth, i.e. Islam) and baatil (falsehood, i.e. everything other than Islam).
n The Kuffaar are fighting us in order to eradicate the Deen and prevent any implementation of the Sharee'ah.
n The enemies of Allah (i.e. Kuffaar) wish to force the believers into embracing their way of life (i.e. freedom and democracy) and thus become apostates.

This classified information and insight into the evil intentions of the Kuffaar has been given to us by Almighty Allah (SWT).

If the people have a proper understanding of the problem and the cause of calamities, they will then seek the Islamic solution to the problem.

b) Offer the Islamic stance

After creating awareness about the problem you must then offer the correct Islamic stance. Again, the concept of tawakkul plays a big role here and it will need to be integrated with the solution.

When the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) and the Sahaabah used to face adversity and hardship it would increase their Eemaan, not turn them into apostates and defeatists (like the case of people today). Allah (SWT) says:

And when the believers saw al-Ahzaab [the Confederates], they said: "This is what Allah and His Messenger [SAW] had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger [SAW] had spoken the truth." and it only added to their faith and to their submissiveness [to Allah]. (EMQ Aali 'Imraan, 3:173)

If you help him [Muhammad] not [it does not matter], for Allah did indeed help him when the disbelievers drove him out, the second of two, when they [Muhammad (SAW) and Abu Bakr (RA)] were in the cave, and he [SAW] said to his companion [Abu Bakr]: "Be not sad [or afraid], surely Allah is with us." Then Allah sent down His Sakeenah[calmness, tranquility, peace, etc.] upon him, and strengthened him with forces [angels] which you saw not, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowermost, while it was the Word of Allah that became the uppermost, and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (EMQ at-Tawbah, 9:40)

Make du'aa
The du'aa is 'ibaadah (worship) and one of the strongest weapons of the believer. In the time of crisis, it is obligatory upon us to support our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters by at least making du'aa for them – that is the minimum we can do.

Perform Du'aa ul-Qunoot in Salaat ul-Witr, Fajr, Maghrib or 'Ishaa', and ask Allah (SWT) to give victory to the mujaahideen and those who support His Deen (by working for it). You must teach the people, even through your du'aa, that victory is only in the hands of Allah and we must supplicate to Him and ask Him for His assistance and support.

Call for the correct solution
The correct and only solution to occupation is al-jihaad (i.e. fighting) – not khilaafah, democracy, boycotting goods or visiting the mosque more frequently. Do not defuse the anger of the Muslims by diverting them away from the real solution. The one who does this is taking them away from the main duty and obligation of today; and who is worse than he who discourages people from the Path of Allah?

Be arrogant as much as you can (in jihaad)
The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) informed us that whosoever has an atom's weight of arrogance or pride in their heart will not enter Paradise. However, in the time of jihaad, arrogance is a characteristic which is loved by Almighty Allah (SWT). Rasoolullah (SAW) said:

…There is pride [or arrogance] which Allah hates and pride which Allah loves. That which Allah loves is a man's pride [or arrogance] when fighting… (Sunan Abee Daawud, Kitaab ul-Jihaad, Hadeeth no. 2659)

In the time of jihaad, one should behave arrogantly and march with pride, honour and dignity (in order to terrify the enemy). He should ride his horse with arrogance and boast himself over the disbelievers. This is exactly what the Sahaabah used to do – but only in the time of jihaad.

Motivate the believers and make them be proud of the mujaahideen who are fighting to make Allah's Word the highest.

The call to jihaad should be general, not specific
Every Muslim is a fighter, but not every fighter is a Muslim.

Jihaad is not restricted to physical fighting; therefore, the daa'ie is obliged to support the jihaad in as many ways possible.

For women, their jihaad can be to teach their children al-Walaa' wal-Baraa' and Tawheed. Others, who may be disabled or ill, can help by making du'aa or raising money. Everyone has a different role to play. Some of the Sahaabah would fight, some would educate, some would raise funds and some would support verbally.

Furthermore, it is vital that we understand a very important principle of jihaad: victory is not always the liberation of land or defeat of the enemy. This means that even if we lose a war or are annihilated, we will always be victorious so long as we fight for Laa ilaaha illallah and die as Muslims.

Call for action; give people responsibilities
Give people responsibilities and tasks. Let everyone be involved in the da'wah and jihaad.

Some can write articles, publish books, run websites, and others can educate, distribute leaflets, give talks and raise funds, etc.

Focus on the status of the believers
One of most successful ways of motivating the believers is by mentioning their status in the eyes of Allah. Inform and teach them that:

n Allah (SWT) has dignified us by giving us Islam.
n We are the best nation and creations of Allah.
n We are the children of Aadam (AS) whom Allah ordered the angles to make sujood to.
n Victory is a promise from Allah and He will support us with invincible forces, i.e. the Malaa'ikah (angles).

By mentioning their status in the eyes of Allah, it will motivate them and boost their morale.
