[From Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Qaasideen by Ibn Qudamad al-Maqdisi (pg. 321)]
It was narrated that some people complained of poverty to some insightful scholars, and the intensity of their distress could be seen.
So the scholar answered saying: Would it be better for you to be blind but acquire twenty thousand dirhams?
They said: No.
The scholar said: Would it be better if you were mute but acquire twenty thousand dirhams?
They said: No.
The scholar said: Would it be better if your hands and legs were to be amputated and you would have twenty thousand dirhams?
They said: No.
The scholar said: Would it be better if you were insane but had acquired twenty thousand dirhams?
They said: No.
He said: Are you not ashamed in complaining to your Master, while with you he has placed bounty beyond fifty thousand dirhams?
