Assalaam Alakium,

I reverted last year and live in the West, Alhamdulliah.

As I see it, I am a Muslim pure and simple.

What is the difference of Sunni and Shia? Are there other Sects as well? I wouldn't know what to call myself because I am simply a Muslim. So, what sect would I be considered? Not that it matters, just curious.

Salaam,
SisterKhadija

Assalamu Alaykum sis

Prophet Mohamed PBUH said (( jewish are 73 sects , only one will go to heaven and the rest are in the hell , Christians are 92 sects , only one will go to heaven and the rest are in the hell , Muslims are 72 sects , only one will go to heaven and the rest are in the hell )) , then the sahaba asked him (( which one is this he said (( the one that follow the Quran , and my Sunnah , and the steps of the Good Followers ( Sahaba ) after me ))

their is main two Muslim Sects , Sunnah and Shia and then a small sects like Droz ( which is not islam any more i'll explain it later ), Abadya .... etc

and even those sects are divided to too many sects inside :(

the Difference between Sunnah and Shia is in Following of some sahaba but they both said ( no god but allah , Mohamadon is Allah's Messenger )

eg . Abu Bakr ( May allah rest his soul ) in sunnah he is the best followers ( Sahaby ) for prophet Mohamed , In Shia he is Kafer ( Not Muslim any more ) , and that a huge Difference Because Prophet PBUH Said (( if a Muslim said about his brther that he is kafer , one of them will be )) , then when Shia Said that Abu Bakr is Kafer nither them or Abu Bakr will be on hell , and when we know that prophet Muhamed said that Abu Bakr will go to Paradise and Allah SWT Mentioned him on the Quran , i thing we have to got the image

and many other things , it will toke for ever to explain it :)

If you just pure Muslim that Doing what quran Said and prophet Muhamed PBUH said ... then i guess you are in the right path , and you are probly In the sunna side , but if god named as Muslims why to choose any other name , we are just Muslims that Follow our Prophet :)

i might find to you more explanations on this issue , i hope i will
and Allah knows Better

assalamua alaikum,

sister, i checked your question out but couldn't answer it earlier because i logged off. i'm sorry about that.

i'm assuming, by saying you're a "muslim, plain & simple", that you have converted to mainstream Islam aka Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah. good for you.

There really is no such thing as 'sunni'; the term was only created to bifurcate ourselves from these other groups, sort of to *distinguish* ourselves from everyone else.

simply put, we of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah follow both the Furqan (the Qur'an) & the Sunnah. Both are Wahy, or revelation from Allah (awj).

the shia were initially a political group that attached themselves to Ali (r) during his caliphate. many of them were the rioters from Egypt who were involved in the killing of the third caliph, Uthman (r), and believed the rule of the Ummah should belong to someone from the Ahlul-Bayt, or the prophet's household.

in my opinion, they are a separate sect that practice many innovations contrary to the deen; some of whom go so far as to insult the companions of the Prophet Muhammed (saw). i believe they are of the Ahlul-Bid'at , with a strong possibility they are still Muslim.

alas, though, Ka'b Ibn Zuhayr was one person who insulted Abu-Bakr (r) by calling him the cup-bearer of poison. to this, Muhammed (saw) said anyone who killed ka'b would have all his sins forgiven.

ok, i'm going off on a tangent. anyways, my essential point is to stick to whatever you have now and not worry about these 'sects.'
