View Full Version : Surma/Kohl/whatever else it's called...
This tends to contain a huge proportion of lead, thereby having deleterious effect on the body. In the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.) it would probably have been beneficial, however, for most people nowadays, in the developed world it clearly poses more risks than benefit. (possibly making it haram...)
So:
1) Can you get it without the lead?
2) And does it still have the or even some beneficial properties (as mentioned in Sunnah, right)?

You cant make something sunnah, haraam
If it contains lead, use a lot of it. See what happens. It'll bring you one step closer to God.

Musa .a.s. wanted to see Allah and HE said to look yonder upon that mountain, i will show myself (or glimpes) to it and see if it can withstand it. There was blinding white light and after that the mountain had turned to dust. I think this is where the surma/khol comes from :D
But yea, if you use it regularly you can even see the starts in the daytime ;)
If there's any lead in it then it is because of the surmadani (the metal container that holds the surma) and the metal thing you use to put surma in your eye with. But like the person above said, use lot of it and let us know :eek3:

Yes, black henna contains some form of lead (carbon I think). It has known to cause the skin to burn, leaving scars etc.
Best to avoid it. You're better off buying henna that resembles a more green colour as opposed to black.
This is actually a serious question, because it's negative effects far outweighs the positive ones. Surely, we're meant to stay away from such things? Unless, it has no lead...and I'm not sure if you get this.
I can post a medical article if you want on lead poisining etc? It's quite long though...

Supposedly, ignorance is bliss. But, as I know it, seeking knowledge is a part of Islam, and this is concerning your health and the health of your children. (Why is it only me that seems to care!)

Kohl, Kajal, Al-Kahl, or Surma:
By Any Name, a Source of Lead Poisoning
Many people are aware of some of the most common and best known sources of lead poisoning, such as lead paint and fumes from leaded gasoline. But many may be unaware of the risk of lead poisoning from an easily avoidable source: the traditional eye cosmetic known variously as kohl, kajal, al-kahl, or surma.
The following information is intended to answer questions people may ask about kohl and its dangers:
What is kohl made of?
Kohl may contain a variety of materials. Although it is commonly thought to consist of antimony compounds, samples tested often contain significant amounts of lead. Lead sometimes accounts for more than half the weight of a sample of kohl, usually in the form of lead sulfide.1 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref1), 4 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref4), 5 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref5), 6 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref6), 7 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref7) Is kohl directly linked to increased levels of lead in children?
Yes. A number of studies have shown that children exposed to kohl have increased levels of lead in their blood.2 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref2), 3 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref3), 6 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref6), 8 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref8) This exposure puts them at increased risk for the serious consequences of lead poisoning.
What are the effects of lead poisoning?
The risks associated with exposure to lead are especially serious for children, who are particularly susceptible to absorbing lead from the environment. Among the effects associated with high levels of exposure are anemia, kidney problems, and neurological damage that may include seizures, coma and death. Even at relatively low levels, chronic exposure to lead may lead to learning and behavior problems (see Dangers of Lead Still Linger (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fdalead.html)," FDA Consumer, January-February 1998).
How are children exposed to kohl?
In some cultures, it is common for parents to apply kohl to the eyes of infants and children. Infants of mothers who use kohl sometimes have elevated levels of lead in their blood.6 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref6), 8 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref8), 9 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref9) Also, some people traditionally paint a newborn's umbilical stump with kohl, supposedly for medicinal reasons. 2 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref2), 3 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-kohl.html#ref1)
Unlike some sources of exposure to lead, this one is easily avoidable by not using kohl on your children or yourself, and keeping it out of your home.
If someone in my family has been exposed to kohl, what should I do?
Stop all use of kohl immediately and be especially careful to protect children from further exposure. Place unused kohl in a sealable container or plastic bag and contact your local sanitation or waste department regarding appropriate methods for disposal. Thoroughly wash hands and any other body parts that may have come in contact with kohl. Wash exposed household surfaces with soap and hot water. Ask a health care provider to test children as well as pregnant or nursing women for lead poisoning if they have used kohl.

I *think* kohl pencils are ok. Can't say for sure..but I was under the impression the only problem regarding lead poisoning was the surma type stuff you get as opposed to pencils.
