I'm applying for college in a few months and I wanna study an A/AS level in some kind of computer subject. The college I'm applying to offer IT and Computing. Does anyone know the difference between the 2?

I think Computing teaches you programming which I am quite interested in.

Thanx

Wasalam:)

Salaam Alaikum

I would check the topics covered by two courses in some
detail.

I would think that the IT course would have general topics whereas the Computing probably has more technical coverage.

I personally would suggest Computing but it would depend
on what career path you'd wish to take.

As already said, IT is a much more general look at computers in the world today. It even does bloody traffic lights.

Go for Computing. Its focus is on the actual computer; hardware, software, programming languages, etc. Be aware that, even though it isn't a requirement, strength in maths at AS/A-Level will make the first year quite a bit easier.

Thanx very much every1!:D

I am interested in becoming a web page designer in the future.

Computing sounds good, I think I'll go for that. I'm studyin GCSE ICT at the moment and its crap. Too easy. It'll probably be the same 4 A level.

Thanx again

Wasalam:D

To echo what others have said, IT is easy-peasy, but if you have the chance to do Computing, then do that instead as you will learn much more. Plus Computing as a subject has been around for longer than IT/ICT, and is much more respected.

As to being a web page designer, that market is way way too saturated. I'd recommend that you go into programming, system design, or some kind of computer-related engineering.

I couldn't agree more - the IT market has been saturated with
web designer work. Especially with the recent demise of many
dot.coms.

Recently at my work we had around 100 applications
for a web designer position - many of the candidates were
over-qualified for the post.

Also don't recall any muslims applying ... :(

AG, IT? Computing? Boring. You should do something fun like psychology:rolleyes: or something health related. Just j/k, do what you think is best, talk to people about what exactly to expect and what it is like. As for jobs, volinteer while at Uni as that shown initiative and it gives you major browbie points in an interview.

AG, depends on who u r, rather "whatever floats your boat" Personally i work in an up market department store selling computers. I enjoy the job, not becuase of the computers but rather the chance to speak to all the different people. Me is a people person and i don't like chatting on the net becuase its boring. So i couln't imagine to think how bad it would be being behind a computer screen for hours per day.

I do think psychology and computers are strongly correlated especially in the areas of AI. So as i said, talk to the people and ask them what they really think. You don't want to be given wrong advice and do something that you don't like.

P.S Also, like Qurratulain said watch out for RSI

Wot is the RSI?

Assalamulaikom,
You get RSI when you use the computer too much and dont care about how your sitting, or using the mouse etc. Once you get it you cant use the computer anymore since your hands cant concentrate that well, back pains etc. I have seen many of my classfellows get it, in the initial stages one can get better, but if it gets to worse its really awfull. Then you have to find another field to work in.
