CLIMATE CHAOS - A DISASTER WE CAN'T IGNORE
with Tony Juniper (Friends of the Earth) & Fazlun Khalid (IFEES)
Date: Friday 25th November 2005
Time: 6.45 pm - 8.30 pm
Venue: Main Hall, 45 Crawford Place, Edgware Road, London, W1H 4LP
Humanity is heading for a climate crisis of unimaginable proportion.
With more frequent heat-waves, floods and intense hurricanes, the
signs already seem to be upon us. Yet, without urgent action, far
worse will be inevitable. If we ignore climate change, twenty
percent of Bangladesh as well as parts of Egypt and Asia could be
lost beneath the waves; drought and water stress could affect
billions, and wars could become even more common, including in the
Muslim world, as people fight over the diminishing resources left
on the planet. It is clear that to build peace, we must stop
climate change, and fast.
Yet what do existing environmental organisations and the growing
climate movement have to offer to Muslim communities? With dozens
of synchronised climate demonstrations taking place on Saturday
3rd December, in London and throughout the world, should Muslim
communities not be present? And what do Islamic teachings have
to say about the threat that we currently face?
This evening, we will be joined by two leading and inspiring
environmental figures, to discuss what is widely recognised as
the greatest challenge facing humankind. Tony Juniper is the
Executive Director of Friends of the Earth and Hajj Fazlun
Khalid is the Founder and Director of the Islamic Foundation
for Ecology and Environmental Sciences.

1000 YEARS OF ISLAM AND BRITAIN - PAST & PRESENT
by Sidi Daoud Rosser-Owen (Association of British Muslims)*
Date: Sunday 27th November 2005
Time: 11.00 am - 1.00 pm
Venue: Froud Centre, 1 Toronto Avenue, off Romford Road, Manor Park,
London, E12 5JF
Although migration of Muslims to Britain accelerated after the
Second World War, the relationship between Islam and Britain
actually stretches back over a millennium to the 8th Century
CE when Muslims probably visited these shores as explorers and
traders and Anglo-Saxon sailors ventured to North Africa. It
is a story of kings and paupers, of soldiers and sailors, of
alchemists and anatomists and of mosques and universities.
From King Offa of Mercia, to the Crusades. The cultural
influence of Andalusia and Osmaniya (Ottomans). From British
Calcutta to everyday Whitechapel. It's a story of interchange,
of dialogue, of political alliances and of friendships from
across continents and cultures. Above all, it is a tale of
interplay between Islam and Britain, of ordinary men and women
here in Britain, of communities shaping themselves and of
revolutionary ideas that shaped the Britain we live in today.
Today's Britain would be very different without Islam!
Join us as Sidi Daoud narrates the story of the Islam and
Britain you never knew. Knowing that we live in a climate in
which misunderstandings and hostility are all too common,
this year's theme will be a critical unearthing of our
historical truths so as to carve a new public consciousness,
one of commonality and interdependence. Islam Awareness Week
exhibition materials will also be on display.
* Daoud Rosser-Owen is President of the Association of British
Muslims and co-founder of the Council for Human Rights and
Religious Freedom.

Date: Sunday 27th November 2005
Time: 6.00 pm
Venue: St Ethelburga's Centre, 78 Bishopsgate, London, EC2N 4AG
Theatre performance of a play written by Sidi Luqman Ali. In a

a suicide bomber invokes classic Muslim stories to shed light
upon the twisted intentions which led to her husband's horrific

and storytelling converge in this one woman short play by
Khayaal Theatre Company.

Muslims and co-founder of the Council for Human Rights and
Religious Freedom.

with Sidi Luqman Ali and Eleanor Martin
Date: Sunday 27th November 2005
Time: 6.00 pm
Venue: St Ethelburga's Centre, 78 Bishopsgate, London, EC2N 4AG
Theatre performance of a play written by Sidi Luqman Ali. In a
bid to impart her hard won peace to her young son, the widow of
a suicide bomber invokes classic Muslim stories to shed light
upon the twisted intentions which led to her husband's horrific
crime. Tales resonant with poignant allegory from Iraq, China
and India speak volumes in this path-finding and timely
reflection on extremism. Soul searching, emotional catharsis
and storytelling converge in this one woman short play by
Khayaal Theatre Company.
