Not worth a rush
Millions of women are killed
According to a new study violence and discrimination are the main causes for the death of women world-wide. The director of the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), Theodor Winkler, explained in New York, that the number of women who would die at the consequences of violence and destitution is larger than the number of the victims of wars in the 20th Century altogether. "The deeply rooted phenomenon of violence against women is one of the biggest crimes of mankind", said Winkler.
Violence is one of four reasons, why women would have to die at an early stage, explained Winkler, who presented the DCAF report "Women in Insecure World"on Thursday. The others are wars, hunger and illness. According to estimations of the United Nations at present lesser than 200 million women are living in this world than demographically expected. "The reason why they are not there is that they were simply killed." Winkler named abortions of female fetus, the killing of small girls and unsatisfactory access to medical supply and food as examples. In addition honour killings, domestic violence and armed conflicts are mentioned.
On the basis of the number of 200 million absent women one may estimate that two to three million women are killed annually because of their gender, said Winkler. 2,8 million humans die annually because of HIV and AIDS, 1.27 million because of malaria. "The reasons are various, but they are finally ascribed to the simple fact that for too many people the life and dignity of a woman is less worth than that of a man. This situation is intolerable."
