Assalamu Alaykum,
Since September 11th, we, as American Muslims, have had to re-examine
our
very identity. We had to ask ourselves many difficult questions.
- How could people who claim to be Muslims do the horrible acts of
September
11th while urging others to do the same, all based on their
interpretation
of Islam?
- Is our understanding of Islam compatible with 21st century realities?
- Are we able sincerely to fulfill our American citizenship commitment
while
maintaining our religiously-mandated support for our Muslim brothers
and
sisters overseas?
- Do American Muslims have a legitimate role to play in the future of
America?
- What, in Islam, empowers American Muslims to live and contribute as a
minority in a non-hostile, but non-Muslim society?
- How do we identify ourselves so that our children can grow up without
feeling the terrible conflict of having to choose between their
American
identity and their Muslim identity?
This Friday's "Voices of Contemporary Islam" session will attempt to
address
these issues. We will evaluate the lives of several famous Muslims in
order
to learn from their life journey. The list includes Omar Ibn Al-Khattab
(May
Allah be pleased with him), Malcolm X, Sayyid Qutb, and Rashid
Ghannouchi.
We will project our search for answers against the Islamic history to
attempt to find Islamic grounding for our thinking. And most
importantly, we
will have a healthy discussion around these issues within the Islamic
traditional manners of "jadal" (intellectual dialog).
The discussion will start this Friday evening, at 7:00 p.m. at Masjid
Al-Rahman. I hope to see you all there.
Please pass this invitation to all those you know, who may benefit from
this
discussion.
