Salam Aleykoum,
I'm a new comer on the forum,
sorry if my english is not so good: I'm French.
I have to deal with a complicated situation: I'm muslim, I want to wear
the hijab but here in France it's impossible because of the law on religious signs ban.
I think that I have to leave France definitly to finally be a pious muslim but it's not so easy to find a job abroad especially in my field (Medias TV/Radio).
So I wanted to know if somebody as already done that kind of choice, and if she/he can
share her/his experience.

I am so sorry for your problem. Just to see what will happen I think it would be worth your while applying for asylum to the USA for religious persecution. I'm serious but I doubt it would be granted though it is a valid request under US law, however w your skills you could publicize it. Maybe contact Alertnative Media and contract out as a reporter, contact places like Democracy Now and ask for a job there based in France...
What are other women doing? the weather is getting cooler maybe you can wrap up with a shawl more than a veil. I disagree w the French policy, banning dress types is not dealing with the root of the problem, just brushing the problem under the carpet.
Like, as if you don't LOOK Muslim you won't be!! No problem with an ignored minority if we can't see them! LoL!

it forces a ghettoization, even if they could get the capital to start a business their market will mostly be Muslim, a minority market right there. When most ppl are poor in your market it's harder to start a business and you think every other muslim isn't doing the same, the competition is tougher too.

It's a sad story sister and I'm afraid life doesnt get much easier when you move to another country. Yes here in the UK you can wear the hijab, but if you were intent on staying in that field of work you would have a whole new problem of getting a job in the first place...
I have worked in TV production for the last two years and have never come across a hijabi, except for a girl who temped on our reception desk for one week. I don't currently wear hijab but would like to in the near future. I am even contemplating moving companies once my project finishes, as I know that if I wear the hijab in my current company, any chances of promotion etc will pretty much go out of the window. But Alhamdulillah, I'm sure there are other companies where you can be happy working, just bear in mind that a lot of people in TV production want to hire people that 'look the part' and it's sad to say that a headscarf doesnt fit the bill.
Does anyone else have similiar experience to this? And advice to offer in this kind of situation?

Yeah I've been looking on the Islam Channel's website for the last few months, they only seem to have the same job advertised whenever I check! Also MBC is based here in London, so there are options, when my project nears it's end I will on get on the case seriously. Insha'Allah I would love to work for Islam Channel, it would be a perfect job :-)
I can't imagine what it must be like in France, may Allah make things easy for you Felussa, Ameen.

May Allah (swt) guide you closer to the straight path.

BarakAllahufikoum for all your answers.
It's really hard to make that kind of choice: to leave home and family.
But at the same time I can bear the vulgar jokes anymore and the fact that every morning everyboby hugs everyone.
As you did Ptissem, I already checked for some opportunities in "arabic " medias in UK.
I'm also learning arabic to improve my faith and have a better understanding of the Holy Q'ur an.
I can't give up because I studied for five years in College to get a situation and make my parents proud of me. I'm really priviliged here in France because it's hard for arabic people to get a good job, especially in TV channels.
The fact is that they're going to propose me to prolong my contrat for 6 months and I don't know if I have to accept or to give up right now.
I hope things will get easier thanks to Allah and that I will get answers inshaAllah.

... I agree this appears to be a complicated situation... and it may depend on what sacrifices you are willing to make.... from what I know.... here in the UK there is alot more freedom to practice religion (at present anyway) ... so pehaps going to another country might help you .. Allah knows best.
.... with regards to your field of profession ... perhaps there are Muslim media companies you could work with... or perhaps you could set-up your very own media/tv/radio company :)
... whatever you decide .. may Allah bless you with what's best ameen

Ameen, barakaAllahufik.
In fact, tomorrow I will know if my actual managers want me to stay for six months.
If they do the proposal, I think that I'm giong to accept to get a very significative experience
to be able to apply for a job in London.
I think that by now the only solution to my "prolem" is to be patient.
I'm also learning arabic to be able to apply in arabic medias in UK.
I want to have "toutes les chances de mon côté" (I don't know how to translate it if somebody can help).
I hope that Allah (swt) will help me to get all those "chances" to succeed and to follow the straight path of Islam.

Al Hamdullilah,
until today I have never met such problem like discrimination in jobseeking as far as I know of course.
Here in France, arabic girls are more accepted by french people, I let you imagine why :(
Arabic guys are considered only as thugs and even worse as criminal, thieves, integrists, terrorists...etc...:55:
So I can understand the fact to change your name to find a job for men,
because it's more than difficult for them.
But I would never sacrifice my identity, my name is what I am, my Dad chose my name and it represent so much to me. My name is my bound to my roots, to my land in Morrocco, also and particularly to my religion.
Just write about that eventuality to change my name makes me feel really sad, sad for my brothers and sisters in France and in every country where immigrants are rejected.
That's why I want to leave France, to feel free to practice my religion and to be proud of what I am as Muslim AND Arabic Woman (the MAW :) )
