View Full Version : Differences in the Madhabs
What are differences between the four madhabs? I follow the shafi school of thought but my school follows the hanafi school of thought. I have notice some differences, and I am now wondering what are the differences?

Assalamualykum wrwb
Well little Brother :)
As you may know there are 4 schools of thought. Insha'allah
Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali.
These schools are lead my Scholars, who have interpreted the Quran and Sunnah.
they have difference in a opinions in many things, but all are correct as they are from the Quran and Sunnah.
Insha'allah
Any body else want to elaborate?:)
Wa'salaam
Jazakallah for the information, but what are the slight differences in opinion do they all hold?:)

Salaam,
Just to add....differences arise in the four schools of thought...because they differed slightly on their intepretation on hadiths....but all are 100% legitimate in their own right....and they are all SubhanAllah very learned scholars, who had extensive knowledge of Quran and Sunnah, and the arabic of Quran and Sunnah....so Muslims should have respect for all of them and it doesnt matter which one you follow inshAllah...whichever you believe to be best...
When you read the intepretation for example of Imam Abu Hanafi, you can see how he derived it....then when you read the interpreation of another like Shaf'i...you can also see the reason behind that derivation....
May Allah guide us...

All 4 madhabs said not to follow them blindly and if they find a stronger ruling in another madhab to follow it.

has everyone forgotten about the Ja'afari math'hab?
founded officially by the scholar Ja'afar As-Sadiq - son of mohamed ibn ali, son of ali ibn hussain, son of hussain ibn ali, son of ali ibn abi talib (cousin and son in law of our Prophet SAW)

It doesn't count as a madhab in the sunni sense as there is no acceptance of differences of opinion either way due to differences in the things it holds to be true versus that which the sunni madhabs hold to be true (eg imamate).
(Here I'm referring to what the contemporary ithna ashari claim to, not necessairly the methodology of Imam Jafar as Sabiq)
For example, in the Maliki school, prayer is valid having your arms by your sides, or crossed. In the Jafari school, prayer is valid only with your arms down by your sides and is invalid otherwise. In the Hanafi school, prayer is valid with your arms crossed, but the Maliki position is considered equally correct as it is considered a valid school, whereas the Jafari school is not due to the different basis it uses for assignation of the truth.
To learn more about differences in methodology between the four major sunni madhabs (the others have fallen by the wayside for various reasons), I would recommend the four imams by Shaykh Abu Zahra, Foundations of Islamic Jurisprudence by Kamali and Bidayat al Mujtahid by Ibn Rushd, in increasing order of complexity :)

but surely through the belief in one Allah...
through His word the Qur'an
and through through His Prophet Mohammed...
this group is simply another school of thought??
does position of arms during prayers count for such a divergence?

well, it depends on their method of comming to these conclusion, it is possiable to use an invalid method to make judgements
