Boost in emotional brain activity may keep some women stable
Roxanne Khamsi (http://www.nature.com/news/about/aboutus.html#Khamsi)
Help may soon be on its way for women who live with the pain of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and for those who live with them. Researchers have begun to investigate what happens in the brain as a woman's hormones surge before her period.
So far, they say, the results tentatively indicate that a boost in brain activity in an emotional centre of the brain might help to keep some women more emotionally stable, even as their hormones go on a roller-coaster ride.
Despite huge amounts of interest in PMS and the drugs that might combat it, surprisingly little research has looked at how the brain behaves during this turbulent time, says David Silbersweig, a neurologist at Cornell University's Weill Medical College in New York City. He notes that among women of reproductive age, roughly 75% report mood swings or physical discomfort during their premenstrual phase.
Silbersweig and his colleagues recruited 12 women who experience consistently steady moods during their cycle, to create a baseline for future studies of women with huge mood swings. The researchers conducted tests and brain scans twice during the subjects' monthly cycles: once during the premenstrual phase and again about ten days later.
The team asked participants to press a button in response to negative and positive words flashing across a screen. As the subjects completed the task, their brains were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging, which measures tiny metabolic changes in the brain. The team focused its attention on the medial orbitofrontal cortex, a brain region implicated in emotion control.
Highs and lows
The women's emotional response to the words did not vary significantly during the month, supporting the idea that they did not suffer from PMS. But their brain scans did show a change: they had a significant increase in activity in the medial orbitofrontal cortex during the premenstrual part of their cycle. The findings appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences1 (http://www.nature.com/news/2005/051024/full/051024-2.html#B1).
The team speculates that this boost of brain activity could be what helps these women to keep their emotions steady as their hormones surge. They have started collecting similar data on brain activity from women who do report intense mood swings before their period to see if they lack this brain boost. Researchers will also have to look at varying hormone levels between women to assess these studies, of course.
It is early days for research on brain activity and emotion, notes neuroscientist Jill Goldstein of the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. She says researchers have only just begun to use these scans to see how hormones affect mental processing.
But experts agree that brain studies will provide an interesting avenue into studying mood swings, and possibly in designing pharmaceuticals to ease the pain of PMS.
Chris Ryan, with the National Association for Premenstrual Syndrome in Kent, UK, says this study "adds to the compelling evidence that the menstrual cycle is a key factor influencing the psychological well-being of women of reproductive age". Ryan adds that understanding the mental aspects of PMS should make for "more sensitive treatment" for sufferers. "We may then finally see an end to the blanket prescription of antidepressants for symptoms that are specifically related to menstruation."

Hehehehe you mentioned periods....*sniggrs*
Someone once asked me about a woman's testimony being worth half of a man's (which is a rather simplified statement in it's own) and though as muslims we acept Allah's commands for he is All-Wise it's still quite amazing when you learn of scientific reasons which support this wisdom becasue our human minds are always curious.
The way hormones affect a woman during her periods...hehehe...*sniggrs again* is significant.
If anyone's interested in knowing more i will find that answer and post it up :)
Please note the scientific information is taken from my medical textbook written by non-muslims incase you might think i'm being biased. I just copied out the facts in relation

Here goes
Assalamualaikum
1. The woman's testimony
The quranic reference:
‘and call upon two of your men to act as witnesses; and if two men are not available, then a man and two women from among such as are acceptable to you as witnesses... (2:282)
The verse goes on to explain the reason for seeking testimony from two women in place of the testimony of one man, by saying
"...so that if one of them should make a mistake, the other could remind her" (2:282).
Thus, the verse indicates clearly that there are differences in the ability of women to serve, under the prevailing social conditions, as competent witnesses and givers of testimony. It also indicates that the actual witness would be one woman, even though her testimony might require the support of another woman who would "remind" her if necessary. Thus, one woman acts as a guarantor for the accuracy of the other's testimony.
I've highlighted this part so i can explin to you the wisdom and necessity behind this. Islam has specific rulings and specific punishments thus it is vital to make sure the tetimony is wholly correct to be truly just.
It is also amazing to find how modern science with every new discovery highlights so many of the issues within the quran.
This information was taken from my medical book (Bear in mind this was written by non-muslim scientists)
Pre Menstrual Syndrome Symptom
An estimated 40 million women suffer from Premenstrual syndrome.
Women in their luteal phase * of the monthly cycle are prone to hormonal changes that bring about physical, emotional and psychological reactions. PMS could be a response to declining levels of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen, the female hormone rises after menstruation peaking around the time of ovulation. Its levels drop just before the onset of menstruation. Since this hormone holds fluid, women suffer fluid retention and bloating prior to menstruation. It also brings about salt retention within the body. Some neurochemicals may be responsible for PMS signs. Certain hormones that regulate the body's fluids and electrolytes (Mineralocorticoids) are also disturbed prior to menstruation. This accounts for the bloated feeling that many women suffer during PMS. Prostaglandins that play a vital role in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle could also be responsible for some of the symptoms of PMS. Women experience low levels of serotonin during this period and this can trigger off feelings of anger and anxiety. Similarly, decreased levels of endorphins that control pain threshold may also play a significant part in causing PMS signs.
Some of the common symptoms experienced during PMS:
Forgetfulness and difficulty in concentration <---- please note!
Increased irritability and anger
Anxiety and panic attacks
Fluid retention and weight gain
Loss of sex drive
Mood swings, primarily feelings of depression
Skin symptoms such as acne, oily skin and greasy or dry hair.
*The luteal phase, also referred to as 'days past ovulation' or 'DPO', is the part of the cycle that starts at ovulation and ends the day before your next period. It usually lasts about 14 days and does not vary by more than a day in each person.
14 days within a month! Thus by obvious mathematical deduction one can see when using a woman as a witness there is 50:50 chance of her either being in this luteal phase or not. By asking for the presence of another woman islam balances out this discrepancy! Like i said earlie,r islam is strict about justice. Every trial must be fair and just thus Allah makes sure all aspects of human nature are taken into account. If you were being accused of some horrendous crime i think you'd rather have two women in case one should be affected by her luteal cycle! You still hink this isn't fair? Well then you should argue with all the modern scienctists as they highlight the specifics for us! Allah doesn't have to, we should trust in his infinite wisdom rather than wait for mere humans to take decades to discover what has already been said in the quran!

Hahaha This is hilarious!
Ive only ever come across MEN who are more moody than any women i have ever come across! Im not being biast because i too am i woman, but thats what ive always seen.
Personally i do not get moody, i get very funny and high, so ive been told, but the pains are very sore, but there are such things as over the counter remedies or even for those sisters who do not like taking medicines there are things such as heat pads(they work amazingly).
As for women being less able than men? Blah blah blah
We women go through so much more pain than you men in life - but alhumdulillah allah(swt) will give our reward of it more than you men as well.

There's no mystery to pre-menstrual tension. All your Energy at this time is diverted to your reproductive system. And so you're suddenly TIRED!
We're ALL ratty and quick to temper when we're tired. But its a great excuse to surround yourself with goodies and chill out for a few days, till the Energy returns back to normal again.
And actually I find I'm more astute and on the ball at such times. And my debating skills go thro the roof! May God help anyone who dare go there. ;)
And men have their cycles too. They just don't bleed.

lol
Look what I found.
Scientists may have come up with an explanation for why men become grumpy and irritable.
They can't help it - they are just suffering from "irritable male syndrome".
Men's mood swings may be down to a sudden drop in the male hormone testosterone which, the theory says, affects their brain and therefore behaviour.
Some scientists believe that middle-aged men go through a menopause, as women do.

The reason why women crave chocolate around that 'time of the month' is because we experience a drop in magnesium levels and therefore our body is signalling to us that we need a certain mineral.
It didn't make any sense before. But now we know why.
As for women being 'stupid' than men, well, that is nonsense, too. Anyone who has studied the Bell Curve will tell you that - okay fine - within the female population, there is a tendency for females to cluster around the 'average' human intelligence band.
However, the Bell Curve has shown that while there are many more men who are exceptionally more intelligent than women, on the other extreme, there are also far more men who are mentally retarded than women, too.
So, I'll stick with my chocolate anyday, thank-you very much.

so is it a drop in magnesium that gives dark circles around the eyes... or is that down to anaemia... :rolleyes:I don't know whether depleted magnesium levels cause dark circles. I'd have thought that getting dark circles around that time may have more to do with a lack of blood though. Oh, and lack of sleep, too.

In that case my magnesium levels drop every other day. Choc is also a good provider of ion which is good for the heart.

Weird thread...
Some of you sisters, giving out a lil' toooooo much info there.
In that case my magnesium levels drop every other day. Choc is also a good provider of ion which is good for the heart.lol. Yeah, that's about right. Iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, B1, C, D and E.
You know, that reminds me, Cornell University did a study about the anti-oxidant content in food and what they found was amazing. Cocoa actually contains more than twice as many anti-oxidants as red wine, more than 3 times that of green tea and more than 5 times that of black tea. Amazing, huh?
But, anyway, yeah, one of the biggest hormonal swings in women during the 'cycle' is a decrease in the production of progesterone. We need to make up for this somehow. Therefore it is actually good that we eat chocolate when we feel down because cocoa is the highest natural source for magnesium.
Plus, studies have shown that taking in magnesium around this time is good for us because the magnesium increases our levels of progesterone (and that makes us feel semi-normal again).
When choosing, go for the dark chocolate because it contains more cocoa than rubbish such as Cadbury's which use way too much milk solids. I love 'Green and Blacks', it's excellent because they use everything organic and especially organic sugar cane instead of refined sugars.
So there's a tip.
I think just about everything affects everyone's brains. I believe this is normal in individuals who are alive.

lol.
Nice tip, but what are anti-oxidants?

Bless you, Good Lady. You sound like my wife.
I've often felt that a woman's cycle tends to make women emotionally MORE stable then men overtime. The mood swings of the cycle teach how to cope with the mood swings of everyday life that both men and women experience.
A blessing in disguise, eh?
We men have a mood swings and all we can do is....

That explains public behavior in large sport's arenas.
I have learned to appreciate my wife's PMS. Because it means that in 10 days it will be the 'other time of the month' :D

inshallah lets try sticking to facts only and lets choose topics on these forums that are educational, not just for the sake of choosing a topic

well you can only get so much iron in food.. you need tablets sis !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Iron tablets are not that bad.. try ferrous sulphate and if it gives you a reaction (like constipation or dark stools and maybe nausea) then ask the doctor for something else.. but DEFINATELY do something about it !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anaemia is not a good thing and you certainly don't want to be on a drip.. yes red meat with orange juice is good, as is spinach etc.. but GO AND GET SOME IRON TABS :(
I have not read the article properly will read and comment again later, also i have not read previous posts, so if i repeat something thats already said, excuse me.
The way hormones affect a woman during her periods...hehehe...*sniggrs again* is significant.
No offence, but two womens testifmony being = to one mans, is not because of the effects of periods, if u look in the quran the verses regarding this injunction are strictly in areas where the man is more well versed, areas like finance, this is because the man is dedicated to one job, therefore better versed, as opposed to the wife whom is multi tasking, two women are called by allah so that justice can prevail, if one forgets the other reminds her.
What gets on my last nerves is how many muslims actually assume the reason was because whilst menstruating, women have mood swings, etc and therefore not capable of being just witnesses. and that she is lacking somehow.
for crying out loud ur mothers have periods, i doubt they ever forgot to feed u, bathe u, give u medicine, love u and care for u.

why are people so obsessed with vitamin or mineral tablets?
and that spinach is high on iron is a myth from the 20th century. it barely has more iron than other food.

i still think its true!i am pretty sure. there was an analysis in the 20th century. and they made a typing mistake by shifting the decimal place. thus it had 10 times more iron as it actually had. the mistake was already corrected in the 30ies of the 20th century. also the popeye cartoon has added to that myth. after the cartoon came out spinach consumation jumped up by 30 per cent. since that time ppl think that spinach has lots of iron and babies/kids were "force fed" with it. you better eat a good steak, some chocolate or nuts.

why are you disrespecting your muslim sisters and discouraging woman from converting with this drivel??
yes hormones affect womens moods and ability to make truely fair decisions sometimes, but that doesnt been they are stuiped.

Yeh.....it does.........indirectly.
Its like when your wife is pregnant..........u as the husband mirror the same symptoms as her like increased abdomen size .........
This is called sympathetic pregnancy, it is an actual medical condition.
So Subhanallah what the wife feels the husband feels also.

lol....problem is, REAL men rarely exist these days....
Alhumdullilah thats the first time I've heard of a man feeling when his wife is in difficulty...because all the stories I've heard show that the man quite frankly, don't really care :S, wants the pregnancy to be over as soon as possible, dont listen to his wife when she asks for particular cravings  , dont want to be there at the birth  ...list goes on !!!
plus he'll probably moan about the fact that she's fat and doesn't look good for him when he comes back from work

Assalamoaliam,
:D I couldnt resist this topic especially after reading all the reply so far.
My father is an OBGYN(female doctor), having 5 females in the house lol I feel sorry for him now :D maybe.
But in this topic, being when a group of females live together thier cycles collide and all have the same malfunctions at the same time. My father called a family meeting on night and said he had had enough!!! We thought he was PMSing also so we laughed at him. This mad him more angry but he continued...
From now on there will be a healthy supply of choclate and coffee in the house at all times, when your cycles begin I want each of you to have chocolate in the morning and at bed time with coffee!!
So we laughed at him again. He said the chocolate and the caffine in the coffee stabilize the hormonal imbalance and helps with the mood swings and cramps. Well from that time on to the present all of us females still use the coffee and chocolate remedy, seems to have worked now for 20 years.
Scientifically speaking I dont know the therories proven or not, but If it works it works.
Not to mention good reason for chocolates and coffee. :D :D
fee amaan Allah
your sister fatemah
when a group of women live together for an extended period of time thier cycles start to co-incide, as HSF mentioned. THis reportedly occurs becuase of the release of pheremones by women which affect other women.

In islam women are treated with so much dignity even though they maybe meunstrating, they are excused from salaah but they can still enjoy being with the husband, in contrast to hinduism where menstrating women are seperated from the rest of the household and given seperate living quarters to live in, they dont even eat the food she cooks.
