Bismillahi Rahmaani Raheem
Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu
All praise is due to Allah and to Allah alone. We praise Him we seek His aid and we seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and from the evil of our actions. Indeed, whomsoever Allah guides, there is none to misguide, and whomsoever Allah leaves to go astray there is none to guide. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah, without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammed (peace and blessing be upon him) is the slave and final Messenger of Allah,
To proceed,
Leyton Sixth Form College has an established Islamic Society which has been operating for almost a decade. The Islamic Society aims to cater for all the religious needs of all Muslims who study at Leyton whilst helping them to preserve and practice their faith.
As you may know, the college has taken away the prayer room. This was supposedly done to accommodate more students enrolling at Leyton this year. Furthermore, the prayer room has been transformed into another music room. This has left the brothers and sisters with no rooms in which they can worship without distraction. The brothers have recently been forced to pray outside, whilst sisters cannot pray at all.
When there was a prayer room, sisters who wore the niqaab removed it whilst in the prayer room. Now they are left with no option but to wear it for no less than 7 hours a day. This is a health and safety hazard and sisters have mentioned this causes a lot of discomfort during the school day.
Over half of the students at Leyton College are of Islamic faith. However, the college is not catering for these Muslim students. It is impossible to see as to why the college has not provided an adequate prayer room. This is especially the case as the college brands it self to follow it's "equal opportunities policy". The equal opportunities policy quotes:-
"All communication used in College, oral, written and non-verbal demonstrate respect for all groups."
However, the prayer room was turned into a music room without notification. This is hardly showing respect to the most active society in the college.
Only last week the brothers found a bottle of alcohol next to the Qur'aan and other Islamic books. As you know this is totally unacceptable. If we don't take some action now, then who is to say that there shall not be a repetition of this through other colleges and universities. Religious books which were stored in the room over the holiday were left to be degraded on the floor and many have gone missing.
The college has promised that prayer facilities will be provided to students who wish to pray. However, the times the college has given to the Islamic Society are of no use, as they fall outside prayer times.
The Islamic Society would be most grateful if you can support us in making the college compromise in giving the Islamic Society a permanent prayer room. We ask you, on behalf of the entire Islamic Society to write a letter to show your disgust in the college taking away our prayer room. The letter should be addressed to the Principal and should condemn the colleges decision. Indeed, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say,
"Allah will always help his slave, just as long if he helps his brother." (Collected by Muslim)
Furthermore, we ask you to publicise this news in whatsoeer way you can, and try to get as many people/organisations to support us as possible. Verily, Anas Ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said,
"None of you is a true believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." (Collected by Bukhaari)
Finally, we ask you to remember us in your duas and we pray to Allah that He instils patience in our hearts, and makes us of those who are successful both in this life and in the next. Ameen

Hmm i dont know of any pressure group that specifically caters for the needs of college students.
Contact www.ihrc.org
also www.muslimnews.co.uk and any othe rmuslim news papers that are circulated in London.
Organise a letter writing campaign through them , you will reach a much wider audience inshAllah.
well there is know better way than pilling up the schools mail box with letters from muslim students. InshaAllah if you good give more details about to whome and where to address the letters it would be beneficial.

There actually is a specific Islamic College support group for Muslim students comprised of brothers and sisters that serve to help those Muslim students in colleges a little like how FOSIS helps uni students their name is 'College Link Project (CLP)'. I heard of them from past events they did, they help set up ISOCs, get NUS recognition, prayer room/space, khateebs for Fridays, tarabyah, funding, support, organise events, etc. they may be what your looking for e-mail them on college_link_project@hotmail.com or ring on 07946 337 916.
Sis, if it makes you feel comfortable ask for a female (sisters) CLP advisor.
I've lost the personal contact number of the CLP Amir, if I get it I'll have a word with him for you.
All is not lost yet, I'm surprised the brothers are so calm- they should be ranting and raving (in an orderly type of way) about this. Get Br. Salman to do his bit aswell insha'allah- fight (in a peaceful type of way) them from all angles.
Anyhow, make contact with CLP and let us know how things progress.

Actually sis to be quite honest I really haven't done much yet, when I was in College I was physically involved with College Link Project (CLP), now since I am no longer in any colleges I provide the CLP bros advice and give moral support, alhamdulillah since my time they have grown in strength and numbers- but still remain reletively unknown to most thought they are the ones doing the frontline work, all Muslim college students should be well aqainted with CLP (thats just my own opinion mind).
If the head sis feels uncomfortabel speaking to a CLP brother request her to speak to a CLP sis representative, also get her to get the head bro to speak to the CLP Amir. To me the petition idea sounds very good, should raise awareness, be a daw'ah tool, and drum up a lot of support.

Insha'allah I'll do my bit but may be a good idea would be to involve others such as Muslim Weekly, Muslim News, FOSIS, IHRC, Islam Channel, etc. to write articles and air complaints. Get CLP to get their member colleges and ISOCS to show support, sign petitions, etc.
Perhaps ex- Leyton college goers like yourself, activists, former shurah members, former Amirs of Leyton should be contacted for assistance. Anyhow, keep us updated with the situation insha'allah- you never know this could easily become become bigger than just Leyton and gives a sign after the victory to College managements that they should think twice before taking away prayer rooms/space, etc.

How can you not kw about the prayer room when u go to the college? and how can you not kw who the "head brother" is? Does anyone go leyton sixth form here? May be they'll b able to help inshallah.
Does the ISOC have a email add? a website? contact details for the headbrother? "Muslim Warrior," find out inshallah. Also bro, do u kw if the "headbrother" or "headsister" have done anything yet?
I advise to have meetings with the principal, maybe ask him/her to explain their decision to the whole college. Get petitions from parents. What about local newspapers and Muslim weekly? Ask local masjids to help. Fight for the prayer room and inshallah you will get it back.
What are the sisters doing? How are they praying salaah? Are they even praying salaah? Do they pray with the brothers? What about jumma? Ramadan is also coming!!!
Hows the da'wah in leyton without a prayer room? The prayer room is like a base for the ISOC. Is da'wah still goin on?
Bro, find out as soon as possible, it is essential that a college has a prayer room!
May Allah help you. Ameen

and sister muslimaah, im sure u probably kw who the "headbrother" is. mayb u can help muslim warrior in identifying him. if the "headbrother" is not doin anythin then i dont think he deserves that role.
May Allah help you

So you kw who the "head brother" is. Alhamdulillah that makes it alot easier. As "Muslim Warrior" goes to leyton then tell/describe him who the "headbrother" is. This will probably save him time in finding him. We must act fast because ramadhan is around the corner. Is petitons the only thing they have done? I advise to get local masjids involved. Get Muslim weekly and London Muslim as well as a local newspaper if leyton have one. What about meetings with the principal? That should have already been done.
Speaking from past experience, petitions dont really mean much to the college. Letters from parents are more effective. Try arranging a meeting where the principal explains her decision to the whole college. Get every brother/sister that attends college. Non-muslims should also be invited. Throw as many questions as you can think of. Get some brothers to loose the plot and basically try to humiliate the teacher. Be firm but polite. This is very very effective and nearly alwayz works.
If the principal still does not give you a prayer room, then try to cause as much as inconvinience as you can. Pray everywhere and anywhere. Get non-muslims to complain about their common rooms being hijaked by muslims praying. Hold talks/lectures in the common room. The college will have to do something!!!
If they still dont do anythig, then go to the newspapers. The colleges reputation is very important.
The following are Groups and Organisations to contact:
FOSIS
MCB
Other colleges/unis
The college link project
DFES (government body for colleges, like OFSTED)
Finally, I would like tadvise you to be patient as "Allah is with those who are patient"
May Allah help you in getting back your prayer room

To proceed,
Leyton Sixth Form College ......... prayer room.
The Islamic Society of LSC
To proceed, is this Leyton Sixth Form College located on the corner of Lea Bridge Rd. & Dagenham Road ?
I ask because I looked up the school on satellite photography in preparation to offering my proposal.
Providing the location is what I see, (or accommodate it to your situation) my suggestion would be to request the college
to grant a spot of land for the erecting of a ROOM (not a mosque) on the campus grounds which then
could not be taken up for usage by clarinet players.
A land grant would be a good will gesture by the college in this time we find ourselves in but,
all the building funds and labor must come from the students or their sponsors.
In any regards, I hope you find a place to worship.

I heard they got the praye room back, but it was in some next condition. :(
I hope you guys do get a prayer room. It is uncomfortable praying outside given that it is cold now. Get a petition going.. you will (sometimes) even get nonmuslim students signing it because their friends are muslim!
Although i would say if you are NOT given a prayer room despite asking for one, pray outside on fridays. (I don't know what you'd do other than fridays.. might be awkward)
It's an extremely effective way of dawah.. onlookers are amazed at the discipline muslims have (in praying together that is) and at the unity. The men could lead the prayers and the ladies could pray behind. :)
