Assaalam alaikum,

Well let me explain. Ok my father is a muslim and my mother is chaldean (christian iraqi). Usually Iraqi christians doesn't agree with marrying muslims but anyways they're happily married alhumdu'allah. Never have I been taught anything about Islam from the day I was born 'til age 11. When I met my friend who is from Pakistan, i've also met his parents. His dad asked me where i'm from. I told him my family is from Iraq. He asked me if Im a muslim. I said I dont know LoL. He aske me if my parents are muslims. I said my mother is catholic and my father is muslim. He said I should follow my father always. So that point on my friends father started to teach me the basics...you know the five pillars. Right away I fell in love with it and ever since then I started learning but very slowly. So when I came home and I saw my father praying. I came next to him and started praying with him. He was suprised and said "thank you son." LoL but then all 3 of my brothers started praying from that point on. So I got involved in Islam since age 11 basically. Im the oldest out of my 3 brothers. Im 24 yrs old now and Im dissappointed cause im progressing slowly. I can't read/write arabic. I speak it fluently but not enough. I only know how to pray/fast/ i've read the Qur'an in english translation. Some how i feel like this isn't enough. I've came here to gain more knowledge on Islam but I know I have to attend to Islamic school to better myself. One question that always stuck in my head. That is ...if I'm a convert? Nothing wrong at all at being a convert...most converts are very deeply religious than borned muslims lol ;) What do you brothers and sisters say?

Salaam.

Brother, what Sister Anna said above is right. The moment you accept Allah to be the only Being worthy of being worship and His Prophet the ONLY role model in learning all acts of ibaadaat, then you are a Muslim; whether a convert, revert or whatever they call it.

Equally, you need to learn the Arabic, because some scholars are of the view that learning the Arabic language is compulsory in order to have a proper and better understanding of the religious and mundane legal rulings. Added to this, try and attend any Islamiyyah School closeby. This is the most important way of acquiring the religious knowledge. As they said: Al'ilmu bin naqali, laa bin nazari, meaning: knowledge acquisition is through learning (from a teacher), not by mere reading alone.

We daily pray to the Almighty Allah to continue to guide us a right, amin.

Assalaam alaikum

I've also noticed that. They told me you can read the Qur'an in english translation but they also told me if you read it in Arabic is more "accurate" and better understanding. First thing first is to learn to read/write/speak more arabic. They have arabic schools for free around here in Arizona so im goin to check it out. Thanks anna200uk/ abuSadiq for your help! :)

Alaikum Salaam. You're muslim by the sound of it.

He aske me if my parents are muslims. I said my mother is catholic and my father is muslim. He said I should follow my father always.I think if you said that your mother was muslim he would say to follow your mother.
Anyway, I read arabic but I don't speak arabic-you are the other way round. I urge you to learn to read because than you can read it yourself when you need it.
I was told by my uncle (actually he forced me) to write each and every arabic letter and read it loud enough every time I stroke the pen for every letter, when I was in high school. Start at around 2 in the afternoon. By sunset I was start reading the Qur'an on my own very very slowly and struggling. Many years that was forgotten, than one day I was alone and I felt so lonely, I start read the Qur'an on my own while listening the tape.
My uncle was a hitter and I hate him for his hitting habit, but, he left a print in this world that stays forever, that is the knowledge, the fruitfull tree.
