Hello.
Hope this note finds you in good spirits and health
I am curious as to the difference between a Messenger of Allah and a Prophet of Allah. I 'll assume based on my catholic upbringing and limited knowledge of Islam that a Messenger delivers a specific message from Allah at a certain time and place. The Prophet is assigned by Allah to teach a message perpetually. A Messenger's special service assigned by Allah is over when the message is deliverd. A Prophet must continue to deliver his message until his time on this world ends.
Is that describe the difference between the two?
Any examples illustrating the differences between who was a Messenger of Allah and who was Prophet will be appreciated.
Thanks

Wa alaikum as salaam,
AFAIK, All Messengers a.s. are prophets a.s. of Allahs s.w.t. The messengers are entrusted with the additional task ask they convery the message of Allah s.w.t., ie. they come with books of Allah s.w.t. -- often after the message has been distorted or been altered.
The prophets a.s. are entrusted with the task to leading the mankind towards light and guidance and taking them out of the darkness of disbelief. Mankind has a general tendency to believe in what is apparent and forget or alter the reality to suit his own desires and weaknesses. All messengers turned the people towards the reality of the unseen - Allah s.w.t., his promises on good deeds, the rewards / punishments of the hereafter - all of which are unseen and "promised" ...
Examples:
Abraham (= sahifa - "parchments"), Moses (= Taurah), David (= Zaboor) , Isa (Jesus) (= Ingeel) and the last prophet (= Quran) a.s. all were Messengers. Each recieved the books mentioned in the brakets.
Adam, Nuh, Ismail, Isaac, etc a.s. were prophet - chosen by allah s.w.t. to perpetuate the message.
Thus basically your understanding is correct :)

Thank you all for the replies.
It seems my understanding of the role of a prophet is correct. But I had assumed a Messenger's duty was less important then a Prophet's. Seems the reverse is true. Is the role of Allah's Messengers to advance/modify/correct the teachings of previous Prophets and Messengers? Is The Last Prophet Mohamad also Allah's last Messenger?
100,000+ prophets. That I don't not know as well.

The core of the message of each messenger is the same. But the law changes from people to people. Also each prophet had experience from previous prophets and he would warn his people from mistakes made my the previous people. This is the reason mohamed (saw) brought us All we need to defend ourself from shaytaan. Many people think the story in the Quran are there just to fill pages but each story has a unique lesson to be learnt from and each prophet left us all a great example to ponder over. Yes Mohamed (saw) was the last Prophet and Messenger. I hope that help.

Yes ... as you can see from my previous reply ... the last prophet s.a.w. was also a messenger, as he came with the last and final revelation - the Quraan. We are the last of the nations ... after muslims, there are no other nations. When the last believer will die, Allah s.w.t. will fold up this whole system and institute the Day of Judgement

Wa alaikum as salaam brother Dualeh,
An interesting note is that the Quraan doesn't mention the 'ibadaat of the other prophets a.s., but, mentions thier da'wat to their people - since the purpose of this ummah is to carry on the work of the ambiyaa a.s. And no doubt they were great examples of 'ibaadat yet that is not mentioned.

I agree with you akhi, but their attributes (Ayub (as) and his patience in pain) are mentioned, which inspire one to do good deeds. I really love reading their stories, INSHAALLAH INSHAALLAH I WILL MEET THEM ALL IN JENNAH INSHAALLAH.

Ameen ...
Their qualities (sifaat) are mentioned because they are qualities that are needed by those who do the work of da'wah.

Asalamu alykum
InshaAllah i will post, some short stories of the prophets (as), so that we can take lessons from them.
Prophet Enoch (Idris)
Allah has praised Enoch, describing him as being a prophet and truthful: Mention in the Book (Qur'an) Idris (Enoch). Verily! He was a man of truth (and) a prophet. We raised him to a high station. (Ch 19:56-57 Qur'an).
Enoch was born and raised in Babylon following the teachings and religion of Prophet Adam (pbuh) and his son Seth (pbuh). Enoch was the 5th generation of the Prophet Adam. He called the people back to his forefathers religion, but only a few listened to him, while the majority turned away.
Prophet Enoch and his followers left Babylon for Egypt. There he carried on his mission, calling people to what is just and fair, teaching them certain prayers and instructing them to fast on certain days and to give a portion of their wealth to the poor.
He was the first of the Children of Adam to be given prophethood after Adam and Seth (peace upon them). It is reported that he was the 1st to invent the basic form of writing. Some of his wise sayings are:
Happy is he who looks at his own deeds and appoints them as pleaders to his Lord
None can show better gratitude for Allah's favors than he who shares them with others. Do not envy people for what they have as they will only enjoy it for a short while. He who indulges in excess will not benefit from it. The real joy of life is to have wisdom
Walykum salam
