What i gather from the word torrents is that you can download Nasheeds and Islamic talks from sunni torrents and a few others like desi torrents but are torrents like Napster - file sharing, peer to peer or exchanging nasheeds/talks or do you just go on the website, pick a Nasheed you like, pay for it and download it by clicking 'Save as'?

yes its a P2P thing. You don't pay, but you can donate to the website.
Firstly u have to download a client to open the torrents with, we have got bit comet and bit tornado.
Good websites are sunnitorrents as you said, and also www.islamictorrents.net :)

To emphasize, it is P2P, but you have to go to a torrent site to find downloads (unlike other P2P where you just use the software to search).

Download a Bittorrent client, like the original bittorrent, or bitlord, bitcomet, I use bittornado.

go to a torrent site.

Download the torrent you want.

Once it's finished downloading it's nice if you leave that download window open for awhile, say 24 hours, so other people can get the file off you.

You donwlaod a .torrent file and open it with any bit torrent program. All free although most of the time you have to register with the tracker (website)

I don't understand why torrents are faster than downloading files normally from a HTTP or FTP server :scratch:

The only thing I can think of, is that HTTP is limited (i think) to about 40k for me, whereas torrents might go faster...although all the torrents I've downloaded only got to 20k at the most...

Can someone explain the advantages of a torrent to me. (I know it puts less strain on the server, and its sharing so...but still, me me me me me :D)

Its all about the bandwidth. Usually its actually slower as it depends on seeds but the main advantage is you can host many large files without incurring bandwith costs. Imagine hosting ALL that stuff on Sunni Torrents on a FTP/HTTP, the bandwaith cost will run into the £1000's...

And dya really reckon? I know someone who has 2000GB of bandwidth for something like $99.99 / month. How much strain would the server at sunni torrents take? There can't be THAT much stuff there, downloaded SO often, can there? ¬_¬

Hence the name bittorrent which means a heavy rain of bits. The reason why bittorrent is faster than HTTP and FTP is because you download from many sources. Anyone who has downloaded more than you is considered a seed, so the more seeds the more speed you get.

A well-seeded torrent at http://www.islamictorrents.net had a download speed of 150 Kib/s, of course limited to your connection's download speed limit. That is not the fastest it can get. In fact, if your connection allows, the speed can every go higher than that if there are enough seeds.

All major bittorrent websites are Free, and the only two islamic ones are free too.

With HTTP I can only get to 30-40...would I be able to go higher with a well-seeded torrent, or would it also stick at 30-40?

Well, torrents for me are slower in general, on HTTP I often get over 300KB/s downloads, only about a tenth of that @ best on torrents..
