'The Lover who Fell Asleep'

In days of old there was a lover who for years had failed to join in love the with one he desired. In the end, though, the seeker is the finder, for from patience joy is born.

One day his friend said, "Come tonight to this address and I will cook for you. Sit in this room till midnight so that I may come to you unexpectedly."

The man was delighted and joyful
He gave thanks and made charitable gifts,
Since the moon of good fortune had finally appeared
From beneath the dust of bad luck.

The appointed night the passionate lover seated himself in the room waiting in hope for the tryst promised by his friend. Just after midnight the friend, the charmer of his heart, arrived punctually as those are true to their promises. He found his lover lying asleep, so he tore off a small piece of his lover's sleeve and put some walnuts in his lap.

The passionate lover awoke at dawn and saw the torn sleeve and the walnuts. He said, "Our king is entirely truth and loyalty: all disgrace that comes upon us is grown only from ourselves."

O sleepless heart, we true lovers are secure from this:
We play our rattles like guards upon the roof.
Our walnuts are crushed in this mill:
Whatever we tell of our pain, it's nothing.
O railer, how long will you continue to give
Your invitations to join in the world.
From now please don't give this madman advice,
For I've had enough of deceitful talk
That departs me from my Beloved.
I've had it enough, how long shall I have it more?
Only if I go insane will I grow closer to Him.
Fetter my leg, for I've torn the chain of reason.
Bring two hundred ties, and I'll rip them all,
But for the one that is the curls of love.
For the time is come for me to quit the human form,
And take to my spirit.
