A fictitious tale......with a moral.

An old woman and her husband who gained their living as woodcutters worked hard together to collect two bundles of wood every day. They sold one bundle in the market and kept the other to warm themselves. They lived in poverty but nevertheless expected to get a little more rice that year, perhaps new roofing next year and a bullock in three years.

However they were constantly complaining bitterly about their fate.

One day while on their way to the forest, by chance they met a saintly person, which was indeed a rare stroke of luck for them. Then a saintly person offered them the choice: "In my left hand, there is a treasure, so you can pay for whatever you desire. On my right hand: there is temperance, or the virtue of moderation of desire."

Realising that such an opportunity came only once in a lifetime, the husband chose the left hand without the least hesitation. As for temperance, until then he had practised it copiously and that would suffice. Because of the money, the wife wished to have tastier food; each evening for a year they paid for exquisite cuisine. But very soon, observing that they could never serve themselves with all the existing dishes they gave up.

Thereafter they thought of repairing their house."But why should we be content with a room when we can afford to pay for a beautiful house?" said the husband. Therefore they called all the architects of the region and each of them offered different models, plans and material... so much so, that even at the end of a year the two old people could not make their choice.

Wanting to spend their money, they recalled that they wanted to have their own bullock. "Why only one?" asked the husband. "We can buy an entire flock." But there also, the breeds of cattle were numerous, and the couple could not decide which one of the breeds or cross-breeds were the best.

The life of the two old people became a disaster, every new desire effaced the older and they exhausted their desires without the ability to fullfil them.

At that time the saintly person re-appeared before them, and told them "You fools! you already had temperance. Where then was the necessity to go after the treasure ?"

Knowing how to regulate one's desire is the greatest wealth one can ask for, because by its nature desire is unsatisfying. It is better to be satisfied with a little than to always desire more and more and obtain nothing.

Contentment is the key to happiness. When one becomes content with the least amount, the sooner one will be happy. Nafs(Desires, ego) is never contented, so there is no happiness. If one begins to give in to one's nafs; Nafs sees that once it gets what it wants, there is always more. The nafs' desires are like drug addiction. First one starts with one dose, then two, then three, then four, then five, then six, and on and on. First one takes the drug once a week, then twice a week, then every day. There is no end to it. Happiness and peace are designed in the heart. Allah, the Most High, says, "The heart finds peace only with Allah's zikr(remembrance)." This remembrance of Almighty Allah in our daily activities and actions is the prescription for peace and contentment and a check against the nafs(desires).

A righteous man used to visit his brother-in-Islam once a year.He came to visit this brother and knocked at the door. The woman of the house asked 'Who is it?'He replied 'A brother of your husband's.I have come to visit him'. She said: 'He has gone to fecth some wood.May Allah not bring him back and may He break his bones! He did such and such to me' and she went on reviling her husband.

Mean while, the man of the house returned from the mountain, and he was accompanied by a lion with a load of wood on its back, following the man as meekly as if it were a donkey. He greeted his brother-in-faith, asked him to enter his house, took the wood off the lion's back, and told the lion 'Go may Allah bless you'.He then went into the house, While his wife continued to revile him, but he did not say anything to her.The guest sat for a while, and after taking some food departed, marvelling at his friend's forbearence with such a shrew.

A year passed, and the man as usual came to visit his brother-in-Islam.He knocked at the door and the women of the house asked:'who is it?' He replied 'A brother of your husband's, such as asuch' She said 'welcome to you. Please come and sit down.Inshallah my husband will be coming presently'.The man was suprised by the refines manner of speaking and her welcome. In a short while, the man of the house came back, carrying load of wood on his back, which further increased the vistor's curiosity. They sat a nd talked pleasently, while the wife served them a delicious meal and joined them in the conversation.

When it was time to leave the visitor could not restrain his curiosity and asked the host:'My brother, may i ask u something?' The host said 'What is it my brother?' He said 'Last year when i came to visit you, your wife was foul-mouthes and ill mannered, but i saw you coming from the mountain carrying load of firewood on the back of a lion. This year i see that your wife is polite and sweet tempered, but you bring the firewood on your back.I simply do not understand.' The host smiled and said 'My brother, my first wife died. She was as you know, ill tempered and abusive, but i was patient with her.As a reward for my patience and forebearance with her, Allah gave me control over the lion and i used it like a donkey. When my wife died, i married this good women and i am at peace with her. Therefore Allah released the lion from my control and i have to carry my own wood because of peace and comfort i enjoy with this sweet tempered and loving wife'.
