24th July, 2005

Muslim Hands has launched an urgent appeal to provide desperately needed food and water to millions of people facing starvation in Niger & Mali. We have already allocated £100,000 to the region and our teams are already on the ground setting up feeding camps, but much more is needed. Please donate generously.

The current situation is Niger's worst food crisis since 1984, with 3.5 million people facing starvation and children dying every day.

http://www.muslimhands.org/mlstationery/1001/a.jpg Much of the country lies in the Sahara Desert and has suffered severe drought over the past few years. More recently, locusts have attacked what little vegetation remained. Starving livestock, on which people in this region depend, are now also dying in large numbers. Niger's neighbour Mali has also suffered severe drought and locust invasions, again causing massive food shortages for 1.5 million people.

The Niger government has stated that at least 3.5 million people are suffering from food shortages and 150,000 children are severely malnourished in the regions of Tahoua, Maradi and Zinder. The problem is made worse by rocketing food prices in a country where two-thirds of the population live on less than $1 per day.

Experienced Emergency Response Teams from Muslim Hands Sudan (Darfur) and Muslim Hands Gambia are working with local partners to distribute vital food and water supplies in South Niger.

I read about impending famine in four African countries in the paper today...... a small section on the second page totally overshadowed by the report on the bombs in Egypt....

We must ensure that the famine gets widely reported on... there are MANY charitable people Muslim and non Muslim that would gladly give something to help them... so long as they know what is happening...

:jkk: for the reminder sis Hafsah, money is one thing that we tend to have but don't like to give, may Allah give us the tawfeeq to see the bigger picture and give sadaqah to those who need it and may He accept it inshaAllah

I generally give through Islamic relief, hope you don't mind me putting the link here, there are some pics of young kids and old people suffering, there's even a pic of a dead cow, with no meat left on it, was shocked to see it...

Apparently according to news repeorts, ppl only started donating when the media showed pictures of starving children in a horrendous state. I didnt know about their problem until NOW. The media should be more responsible and keep ppl up to date on these issues, they can make a real difference and help save lives!!!!

The public are the main helpers right now as they always are. BUT niger and MALI WILL require longer term assistance, particualry in then next year , until their crops harvest gets back to NOMRAL. so this should not be a one off effort.

The international comminity ignored Niger and Mali for the past year, when all the indicators of a famine had become KNOWN widely.

Also DEC got 5.6 million on its first night of its 8 million pound appeal , whihc is very impressive. Do you think its islmically ok to donate through the www.dec.gov.uk???

"media should be more responsible"

I absolutely agree with you. I don't think its stressed enough the need for Muslim journalists and broadcasting agencies. The media controls the majorities outlook on issues as was evident in the coupt against Hugo in Venezuela. If we had more integrable, non-biased reporting maybe we could move forward. To spend a whole day broadcasting the death of little Sally Sue in Iowa when mass genocide and poverty is striking people across the world is incredibly irresponsible.

Don't want to hear about anywhere but home do I hear?

Well then, why is it that CNN spends most of its time telling us about kidnappings and deaths in upper and middle class America, and not about the more serious problems faced my many Americans? What about inner city poverty? What about the increasing AIDS epidemic in the US? No. Instead we have to hear about little Sally Sue.

The media is incredibly biased, and only the naive would argue otherwise, its time Muslims and all of those who still value the truthful word to take back the power.

The revolution will not be televised.

Wsalam

Do you think its islmically ok to donate through the www.dec.gov.uk??? (http://www.dec.gov.uk???)

personally i'd prfer to do it through a muslim based charity so that it is clear that muslims have donated it when checking figures, although non-muslims may donate through muslim charities.

overall i guess it doesn't matter, but I can trust the muslim organisation to deal with the money in the right way more.

sorry i'm a sceptic, I know its not in the interests of non muslims organisations to not deal with the money correctly and I have donated through them in the past, I'm just saying i feel more comfortable this way. Plus I have my details stored, so i just have to login and press enter

Obviously, the world should help the people of Niger with the current famine. However, there are also long-term issues that need to be addressed.

Is Niger (the land) capable of supporting as many people as it has? If not, they will continue to have to rely on help from the rest of the world. Self-reliance will not exist.

Anyone have any long-term proposals?

Ps. What about the non-Muslims in Niger? I notice that the thread starter only called for help for Muslims there. I guess non-Muslims don't deserve help from Muslims.

Again the IMF and EU and their agencies wreak havoc on the poor.

There are other factors blamed for the rapidity with which the problem descended into crisis. The International Monetary Fund and the European Union imposed economic conditions on the former French colony which, critics say, pushed up the price of food and allowed the Niger government to explore a disastrous "free market" programme to tackle a famine.

I think we should write to the Kings and Sultans in the Muslim world to stop wasting the people's money building unnecessary dysfunction palaces and buying estates overseas, vacation to Las Vegas  and all other vanity crap (I dont give a ... if its their own money) and donate their money to the poor regardless their race, religion etc. instead.

ohh yes, as one member rightly told me, even if it's their own, they should stop it too.

also they need to donate them some farming equiptment so they can make farms so they wont have a food crisis ever again.
