orevergeek.com has a useful guide on speeding up firefox for broadband users. basically after getting to the hidden config settings you set the browser to request more data that it usually does.
1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now! http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000803024910/

I've tried it:) Seems to speed up ummah somewhat. Only been to 3 sites though. Speeds up utopia a fair bit too. Good find bro! :)
Yep it works beautifully. Though I would set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to 6 instead (this is the setting on my Firefox now). Too many requests puts a higher load on the websites you are visiting, and if a lot of people do this on a smaller website it will lock visitors out - and that's unfair.

ops!
fixed
I also recommend that you reset the nglayout.initialpaint.delay setting. As shown here (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/007164.html), setting it to 0 may in fact slow down the displaying of web pages - one person stated that it took 6-7 seconds before he could click on any links. As pointed out by comments here (http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000803024910/), the loading delay is only a 1/4 second, so it's not worth setting it to zero anyway. Right-click the nglayout.initialpaint.delay setting and choose 'reset' to put it back to a 1/4 second.
Apart from that it's fine - though as mentioned here (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/007164.html) you may need to turn pipelining off again if you encounter problems with websites.
So far no problems with BBC or Ummah though :)

Thx baba. I was wondering wether increasing it as high as 30 might be bad for some sites, I think i'll turn it down somewhat, say 12...should be OK for now, since not many people use firefox.

if u set ur pipelining max requests number 2 high some sites sysadmins will just block ur IP address. I think 30 is too high, I would not recommend more than 6.

what is firefox :scratch:its a browser, like your internet explorer (the big blue E)
Internet Explorer (IE) though generally most websites are made for it, it is really a buggy browser and allows all types of malware to be placed onto your computer
For example, copy and paste something from your browser, anything
after you click copy, then click this link
http://www.friendlycanadian.com/applications/clipboard.htm
On IE if will automatically show up on this new link
Also, you can check your browser speed, http://scragz.com/tech/mozilla/test-rendering-time.php
What is the time for this on the little popup screen?
