The Rights of the Foetus

1. Lineage – An-Nasab

The foetus has the divine right to be attributed to its parents.

2. Inheritance – Al-Meeraath

The foetus has the divine right to inherit from blood relations under the Islaamic inheritance rules.

3. Inheritance under testamentary document (i.e. a will) – Al-Wasiyyah

The foetus has the divine right to inherit from outside of its blood relations who count the unborn child within their will.

4. Not harming the foetus

During pregnancy the mother is obliged to look after the foetus and not to harm it. This can be that the mother is obligated to eat healthy, not smoke (which is haraam anyway), take drugs (again this is haraam) or do anything else which will place any distress or harm upon the unborn child.
The Rights of Children

We can summarise 10 rights of the children which the parents are obligated to fulfil from the birth of the child until he/she reaches maturity.

1. To feed the children – At-Ta’aam

Parents are obliged to feed their children halaal food. After birth there is an obligation to breastfeed the child for 1 year and recommended to breastfeed the child for two years.

2. To provide shelter for the children – Al-Maskan

The parents are also obliged to provide adequate, safe & tranquil shelter for their children.

3. To provide protection for their children – Al-Himaayah

The parents have to ensure that their children are protected mentally and physically from any abuse, any non-Islaamic concepts or any exposure to kufr beliefs and tendencies.

4. To provide medication – At-Tib

The parents are obliged to provide adequate medication for their children when and if they are sick.

5. To clothe their children – Al-Malaabis

The parents are obliged to clothe and cover their children in a halaal manner. The child’s hard 'awrah has to be covered from the age of 7 years.

6. Lineage – Al-Nasab

It is forbidden for the parents to denounce their children.

7. Islaam – Ad-Deen

It is obligatory upon the parents to teach their children those issues that are known by necessity in Islaam before they reach the age of puberty.

8. To have a good name – Al-Ism

It is recommended to name the child within 7 days, but it is obligatory for the parents to give the child a good Muslim name.

9. To have good parents – Al-Umm

The parents are obliged to choose good partners for themselves, so that the children can be brought up in the best Islaamic environment.

10. Marriage – At-Tazweej

The parents must ensure that the child marries a partner who is also a good obedient Muslim



The Rights of Parents

There are 10 rights that children have to fulfil towards their parents upon their maturity.

1. To provide food – At-Ta’aam

If parents have no food then it is obligatory upon the child to provide for them.

2. To provide shelter – Al-Maskan

If parents have no shelter then it is obligatory upon their child to provide it for them.

3. To provide protection – Al-Himaayah

It is obligatory to protect the parents from any danger or attack or from doing anything that Islaam forbids.

4. To provide medication – At-Tib

The children are obliged to provide adequate medication for their parents when and if they are sick.

5. Debts – Ad-Dayn:

After the death of the parents if they have any outstanding debts then the child must ensure that these are paid off.

6. Lineage – Al-Nasab

It is forbidden upon the child to denounce his parents.

7. Prayer – Al-Janaazah

The child is obliged to pray the Janaazah prayer for his parents upon their death and to give them an Islaamic burial.

8. Will – Al-Wasiyyah

The child must fulfil his parent's wishes after their death or anything that they wrote in their will.

9. Supplication – Ad-Du’aa

The children are obliged to pray for their parents asking for forgiveness on their behalf.

10. To provide clothing – Al-Malaabis

It is obligatory upon the child to provide clothing for his parents if they are in need of it.
