Lower Garment Below His Ankles
From Riyad us Saliheen
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to a man who was performing Salat while his lower garment was trailing, "Go and perform your Wudu' again.'' That man went and came back having performed it. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said (again), "Go and perform your Wudu'.'' Someone present said to Messenger of Allah (SAW): "O Messenger of Allah! You ask him to perform his Wudu' and then you kept silent (without saying the reason for it).'' He (SAW) said, "He performed Salat while his lower garment was below his ankles. Allah does not accept the Salat of a man who trails his lower garment.'' (Abu Dawud)

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Prophet (SAW) said,

"What is below the ankles of a lower garment is condemned to the Fire (Hell).'' (Al-Bukhari)

Commentary: The apparent sense of the Hadith words is that the part of the dress hanging down below the ankles will be put into Hell-fire. Yet, if this is the fate of the particular piece of cloth the wearer will surely go to Hell. When Nafi` (RA) was asked about it he said, "Yes, but what sins have the clothes committed?''

Abu Dharr (RA) reported: I heard the Prophet (SAW) saying,

"There are three to whom Allah will neither speak on the Day of Resurrection nor will look at them nor purify them (i.e., of their sins), and they will be severely tormented.'' When he repeated this (statement) thrice, Abu Dharr (RA) said: "They are doomed and destroyed! (But) who are they, O Messenger of Allah (SAW)?'' He said, "One whose lower garment trails, one who boasts of kindness shown to another; and one who promotes sale of his business by taking false oaths.'' (Muslim)

Commentary: This Hadith sheds light on three major sins which, unfortunately, prevail in Muslim societies. May Allah amend the lapses of Muslims' behaviour! Ameen.

Two people conversing privately to the exclusion of a third

This is one of the problems that exist in social gatherings, and it is one of the ways in which Shaytaan divides the Muslims and makes some of them hate others. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained the rule and the wisdom behind it: "If you are three, then two should not converse privately to the exclusion of a third until you are joined by other people, because this will make him sad." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, see Fath al-Baari, 11/83). This also includes three people talking privately to the exclusion of a fourth, and so on, and two people speaking in a language which the third does not understand, because this is undoubtedly a form of disdain towards the third, and gives the impression that they intend to hurt him, etc.

Isbaal - wearing clothes that come down below the ankles

One of the things which people treat as insignificant, although it is serious in the sight of Allaah, is isbaal, which means lengthening one's clothes below the ankles; some people let their clothes touch the ground, and some allow them to drag on the floor behind them.

Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "There are three to whom Allaah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at nor praise: the one who wears his lower garment below the ankles; the one who reminds others of his gifts or favours; and the one who sells his product by means of lies and false oaths." (Reported by Muslim, 1/102).

The one who says, "I am not wearing my clothes below my ankles out of arrogance" is in fact praising himself in a way that is unacceptable. The warning against isbaal is issued to all, regardless of whether they do it out of arrogance or not, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whatever part of the lower garment is below the ankles is in Hell." (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 6/254; see also Saheeh al-Jaami', 5571). The person whose isbaal is the result of arrogance will be more severely punished than the one who has no such intention, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever trails his garment out of pride, Allaah will not even look at him on the Day of Resurrection." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 3465, al-Bagha edition) - this is because he is combining two sins in one action. Wearing any clothes below the ankle is haraam, as is indicated in the hadeeth reported by Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father): "Isbaal may be done with an izaar (lower garment), qamees (shirt or upper garment) and 'amaamah (turban); whoever drags any part of them on the ground out of pride, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection." (Reported by Abu Dawud, 4/353; see also Saheeh al-Jaami', 2770). Women are permitted to lengthen their garments by one or two handspans to cover the feet or as a precaution against anything being uncovered by the wind, etc., but it is not permitted to do more than that, as is done with some wedding dresses which may have a train several metres long, which has to be carried behind the bride.

The Prophet's Guidance With Regards to Clothes

The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) wore an `Emamah (turban) called As-Sa`hab, which he later gave to `Ali as a gift. The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) used to wear a Qhalansuah (cap or Kufi) under his `Emamah, the Qhalansuah without an `Emamah and sometime the `Emamah without a Qhalansuah. When he wore his `Emamah, he let its two ends (or Dhu-abah [braids]) hanging between his shoulders. Muslim narrated in the Saheeh that `Amr bin `Hareeth said, "I saw Allah's Messenger (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) on the pulpit with a black turban on his head and its two ends hanging between his shoulders." Also, Muslim narrated that Jabir ibn Abdullah said that Allah's Apostle (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) entered Makkah, while wearing a black turban. Jabir did not mention the Dhu-abah [1] (braid), indicating that the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) did not do that all the time. It could be said that when the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) entered Makkah, he was also wearing his armors and helment on his head [2]. Therefore, he wore what was suitable in various situations.

My Shaikh, Abu al-`Abbas, ibn Taimiyyah, may Allah (subhannahu wa ta`aala) bless his soul in Paradise, used to mention a beautiful secret behind the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) wearing the Dhu-abah. He said that the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) started wearing a Dhu-abah) in the morning following his seeing the vision he saw in Madinah. He saw the Lord of Might, the Blessed the Most Honored, and He said, in a `Hadeeth collected by at-Tirmidhi (3223) [3] and graded authentic by al-Bukhari, "O Muhammad! What is it that al-Mala-ul-A`la (angels in heaven) are disputing about?" The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) said, "I said, 'I do not know.' So Allah (in that dream) placed His Hand between my shoulders and I learned the knowledge about whatever is between the heavens and the earth.'" [4]

Ibn Taimiyyah said, "So from that time, the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) let the Dhu-abah hang between his shoulders." This (ibn Taimiyyah's wonderful statement) is a type of knowledge that the tongues and hearts of the ignorant ones deny. I never saw anyone, except ibn Taimiyyah, mention this statement about the Dhu-abah.

Footnotes
[1] Letting the two sides of the turban hanging between the shoulders.
[2] This is why Jabir (radiyallahu `anhu) did not mention the Dhu-abah. Al-Bukhari narrated that Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu `anhu) said that Allah's Apostle (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) entered Makkah in the year of its Conquest wearing an Arabian helmet on his head."
[3] Refer to Saheeh Sunan at-Tirmidhi (2580), by al-Albani.
[4] This does not meam that the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) had knowledge in everything just as Allah does, as the ignorant claim. Rather, the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) only learned the major incidents and news that were between the heavens and the earth. To totally dissipate the Sufi creed about this subject, we offer two Ayat and a `Hadeeth. Allah said, Say: "None in the heavens and the earth knows the Ghaib (unseen) except Allah, nor can they preceive when they shall be resurrected" [27:65], and, Say [O Muhammad (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam): "I posses no power over benefit or hurt to myself except as Allah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (unseen), I hould have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe" [7:188]. Further, al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated that `Abdullah ibn `Abbas (radiyallahu `anhuma) said that Allah's Apostle (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) said, about the Day of Judgment, "The first human being to be dressed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham. Lo! Some men from my followers will be brought and then (angels) will drive them to the left side (Hellfire). I will say, 'O my Lord! (They are) my companions!' Then a reply will come (from Allah), 'You do not know what they did (A`hdathu) after you.'" If the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) had knowledge about all matters of the Unseen, then why would the angels tell him on the Day of Judgment, "You do not know what they invented (in Arabic, A`hdathu [another word for Bid'ah]) after you."

Just being in the Islamic attire is enough for one to be moved towards Islam. It is Allah that gives Hedayah.

Let me narrate a story that my shaykh told me.

So, the Shaykh, who is always in the Islamic dress, one day was at the airport. It was salaat time, and so the shaykh starts to pray (in the airport). A man approaches the shaykh, and goes SIR WHAT ARE U DOING? No reply. The man is curious and worried. The shaykh, after the prayer goes to this man and says whats wrong? And the man is like sir I was owrried that you were going up and down and i thought something was wrong. The shaykh laughs and goes, I was offering my prayer. I am a Muslim, and I do this 5 times a day. They talked for a little while, and the man goes... sir I love your religion, but I'm an American and I'm white. And the shaykh explained to him the beauty of the colorblindess of Islam. THE MAN, ALHAMDULILLAH ACCEPTED THE SHAHADAH RIGHT THERE. Allahu AKbar.

In another incident, one of my other Shaykh, he was just in his Islamic dress and sitting. Some lady approached him and started to question about why he was wearing what he was in a public place. And the conversation led on where the Shaykh explained the religion. That lady too accepted Islam alhamdulillah.

So you see, the Islamic dress is a form of caling others to Islam as well.

Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an: `O children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc) and as an adornment. But the raiment of righteousness, that is better.'(S7:26). The widespread forms of dresses in the world today are mostly for show off and hardly taken as a cover and shield of the woman's body. To the believing women, however the purpose is to safeguard their bodies and cover their private parts as a manifestation of the order of Allah. It is an act of Taqwah (righteousness).

May Allah Subhana Wa Ta'allah Keep Us, and Guide Us Ila Tareeqen Mostaqeemen.

The covering of Ankles

Allah Ta'ala says in the Quraan-e-Kareem: “And whatsoever the Messenger Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain from it, and fear Allah. Verily Allah is severe in punishment. (Surah 59 Verse 6 - 7)

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whosoever loves my tradition, indeed loves me and whosoever loves me will be with me in Paradise.” (Tirmizi)

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “One who is averse to my tradition, is not of me (has nothing to do with me).” Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “One who imitates a nation is of them.”

The covering of ankles is Haraam and a major sin by the unanimous agreement of the great and true Ulema and Mashaaikh. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “The hanging of clothes below the ankles in pride is forbidden.” (Bukhari)

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Even if there is no pride, the covering of the ankles is forbidden”. (Bukhari)

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “This is the sign of pride. And to adopt the habit of pride is forbidden. Therefore the covering of the ankles is forbidden.” (Bukhari)

By covering the ankles one is deprived of the Mercy of ALLAH. ALLAH will not cast His Mercy on such a person. (Mishkaat)

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam made a statement regarding the cause of the punishment on the People of Loot Alayhis Salaam and this was because they used to cover their ankles. (Durre-Manthur)

It is incumbent for every mature, understanding male of sound mind to uncover his ankles, whether in Salaah (Prayer) or not, just the same way as it is incumbent to keep a fist's length of beard. ALLAH TA'ALA the Exalted has said: Oh Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid restore, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best.” (7:26)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah RadhiALLAHu Anhu relates that Rasulullah Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “On the Day of Judgement ALLAH will not Look at the one who lets his trousers down out of pride.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Hazrat Abu Zarr RadhiALLAHu Anhu said: “Such persons are doomed, who are they Oh Messenger of ALLAH Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam?”

Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam replied: “One who lets out his apparels out of arrogance, one who reminds or makes a show of favors done by him to another, and one who sells his (inferior) wares with false oaths.” Another version of Muslim adds: “One who lets down his pyjama or loin cloth.”

Hazrat Ibn Umar RadhiALLAHu Anhuma relates that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “On Doomsday ALLAH will not look towards a person who lets down his garment like loin cloth, pyjama, shirt by way of aroma.” (Abu Daud, Nasai)

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri RadhiALLAHu Anhu relates that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has said: “The loin cloth of a Muslim should be up to the half length of the shin of the leg or at least between the shin and the ankle joint; however, there is no harm if it is above the ankles (or he said there is no sin). That which hangs below the ankles is destined for hell. ALLAH will not look to one who allows his trouser to flow out of vanity. (Abu Daud, Ibn Majah)

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar RadhiAllahu Anhu relates: “Once I passed by Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam when my loin cloth was dangling. Nabi Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam said to me: `Abdullah, pull up your loin cloth!' Accordingly I pulled it up a little. Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: `A little more.' So I pulled it up further. Since then I have always worn it high.'' Some of his tribe asked: “How high?” He replied: “Halfway up the knees.”

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas RadhiAllahu Anhu relates that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam stated that the qamis (kurta) of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was above the ankles. Allamh Shami says: “It should reach halfway up the calf.”

Hazrat Ibn Umar RadhiALLAhu Anhu relates that Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: ”One who lets loose his dress by way of pride, ALLAH will not look towards him on the Day of Judgment.” Upon hearing this, Hazrat Abu Bakr RadhiALLAHu Anhu submitted: “Oh Messenger of ALLAH Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam! My loin cloth very often slips down unintentionally.” Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “You are not one who does so by way of arrogance,” (Bukhari and Muslim have reported some portion of this tradition)

Hazrat Abu Harairah RadhiALLAHu Anhu reported that the Messenger of ALLAH said: “Whatever flows of the trouser below the ankles will be in the Fire. (Bukhari)

Ibn Umar RadhiALLAHu Anhu reported from Nabi Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam who said: “Whosoever let his trousers flow out of vanity, will be sunk down the earth while he will be muttering upto Resurrection Day. (Bukhari)

We can deduce from the above Traditions that the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam clearly stresses the importance of keeping the trousers above the ankles, and the severity of its' punishment for one who does not take heed.

May ALLAH TA'ALA enable us to act upon the Noble Traditions of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam - Aameen.

these hadiths show that even the "minor" hadiths are important

the mentality is such, that if you take care and are mindful of the small things, you will find ease in addressing the harder issues

but if you are lax in the small things, the larger issues will seem more difficult

when talut commanded his army not to drink, but a few sips, from the ocean, before fighting, some of his troops figured that was a small thing

when they appeared before the enemy, the ones who disobeyed talut about the small thing were cowardly and missed the blessings from their Lord

but those who had obeyed talut about such a small matter, were the ones who were strong and gained the blessings from their Lord

which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?

obey all of the sunnah, thats where victory is achieved, and do not follow the ways of those who follow their desires and whose case has gone far astray

subhanAllah, definitely something to ponder over. JazakAllahu khairun for that lesson.
