View Full Version : The Sea Change

I look back into the house
And see the boy who all that barefoot summer
Came inside for sunset, could not sleep
Because June curtains breathed with light.

A blue breeze that was washed in sea
Brought in pale shells and tided morning;
He walked through wooden rooms and left
Soft footprints under gulls, the skies' wide shores.

And yet inside those days of endless miles
He cried, and did not know why he should cry,
When all the grasses' flowers caressed his feet
And deep the seas came back to heal his hands.

When now I look at him I think he knew
That childhood broke upon the seas that year
And left sharp spars and masts upon the rocks
And splinters in his eyes.
