Are there any hadiths (is that right???) against calling someone a kafir, as to degrade them? Or use in a derogatory manner?

Simly put as far as i understand it, if one disbelieve in the Shahadah.

Ash-hadu anla ilaha illal-Lahu Wahdahu
la Sharika Lahu wa-ash-hadu
anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu

then one is a kafir

Approximate trnalsation: I declare there is no God but Allah and Muhammad ( saw) is his slave and messenger.

This declaration obviously entails accepting other beliefs of islam. and accepting certain rights and obigations and recommendations in your heart, toungue, and in deeds The main pillars of beliefs..

Day of judgement

Heaven and Hell

Angels

Prophets and Messegners of the past

In the Holy Scriputres mentioned in the Quran , in their orignal revelation forms to the Prophets and messegers. i.e. Injeel , Taurah, Zabour...et

Quadr.. predestiantion etc..

These beliefs are evidended and proven from Quran and hadith.

"Kaffir" is not derogatory term!

it is a word which state the position of someone regarding Islam.

someone who doesn't believe in Islam = Kaffir

and under "Kaffir" there is a number of sub categories.

Ahl Kitab = Jew or Xtian
Sabi'i = like Ghandi....a monotheist who doesn't believe in Islam or any other religion
Mushrik = someone who worship many Gods....like Hindus

and there is
Kaffir Muharib = hostile Kaffir.....who declare war on Islam
Kaffir Musalim = non hostile Kaffir.....who we may have truce with...trade with.....allow him safe passage in our lands....etc
like the King of Germany for example who used to exchange gifts with Haroon Ar Rashid and even played chess with :p

Dear Infidel,

You could always keep it as a nickname.

:)

I try not to use the term kafir at all. as it is dangerous term to use. even when speaking of Xians unless they have an understanding of islam and reject it. the vast majoirty of xians wont know oh what islam is. ie they wont know of it comming from Allah swt (God). when they do know of islams links to christianity and judaism and reject it as falsehood i then would call these kafirs. I could not declare a xian who lives in ignorance of the koran/ islamic beliefs and are practising xians worship God, do good deeds help others etc a kafir. the knowing rejecters of Allah swt though i am at ease in calling them kafirs/infidels. atheists are the biggest danger to the ummah.

Mathew, insha Allah when you taste Halawat-el-Imaan (Sweetness of Imaan), most hated thing to you would be kufr or anything that associates with it.:)

"Kaffir" is not derogatory term!

Well the way this person uses it makes it appear very derogatory.
They seem to dislike discussing Islam in a forum with "kafi"r and everytime I (or someone else) asks a question about Islam or Muslims they keep shouting "kafir! kafir!" and that "kafir don't understand" and when I asked for it to be explained all they say is "kafir! kafir!, don't talk to the kafir!".

You get what I'm saying? Or trying to ask?
Plus when I googled the word kafir I found a different meaning that I didn't like.

i found out today that kafir also is used as a derogotory, racist term in south africa for black africans, i assume this is what you are refering to?

That derogatory racist term for black africans didn't come from the Dutch. It was introduced into southern Africa by Muslim Arab slave traders who called the natives kaffirs because they were not Muslims.
