Changing Worlds is an educational arts organization whose mission is to foster inclusive communities through oral history, writing and art programs that improve student learning, affirm identity and enhance cross-cultural understanding. It began as a highly successful project at the Hibbard Elementary School in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood, a major port of entry for immigrants from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Welcome to Changing Worlds! Meet Hibbard School families who have come to Albany Park in recent years. Share their stories.
Most of the families came from far away — Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Others, though they did not travel far, also have found Albany Park to be a new and different world.
Our community is an exciting mix of people. Neighbors and schoolmates have different backgrounds, races, and religions and speak many languages. Some have come from cities; others, from small villages or farms. Some left their homes to escape persecution, war, or poverty; others, to seek new opportunities for their families.
All bring tremendous strength, determination, and a willingness to work hard. They keep going in spite of many problems. They miss family and friends left behind. They need to learn a new language. They worry about crime and gangs, and they may encounter prejudice and discrimination against immigrants.
Hibbard School is proud of its diverse population. Changing Worlds celebrates this rich diversity. As we learn about our differences, we will also discover how much we have in common.
These stories are based on interviews with the families — with children, their parents, and sometimes their grandparents. As you read the stories, think about the people in the photographs. Think about yourself, your family, your friends, your neighbors. We all have stories to tell and so much to learn from one another!"
